Compost and digestate : sustainability, benefits, impacts for the environment and for plant production. Proceedings of the international congress CODIS 2008, February 27-29, 2008, Solothurn, Switzerland. Organic Eprints
This proceedings volume contains the papers presented at the CODIS 2008 congress held on 27 - 29 February 2008 in Solothurn (Switzerland). The composting and digestion of biogenic waste materials and the subsequent application of compost and digestate to soil contributes to nutrient recycling and renewable energy production. Moreover, compost and digestate can improve soil fertility and suppress plant diseases. On the other hand, compost and digestate may also contain a variety of pollutants hazardous to soil, such as heavy metals and organic contaminants. Compost and digestate have been thoroughly investigated in the framework of two associated projects entitled “Organic Pollutants in Compost and Digestate in Switzerland” and “Effects of...

Foliar spraying of vermicompost extracts: effects on fruit quality and indications of late-blight suppression of field-grown tomatoes Organic Eprints
Zaller, Johann G.
The effect of foliar sprays with aqueous vermicompost extracts on growth, yields, morphological and chemical fruit quality and natural infection with late blight disease (Phytophthora infestans(Mont.) de Bary)) on three tomato varieties (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., cv. Diplom F1, cv. Matina, cv. Rheinlands Ruhm) was investigated in a field experiment. Extracts were prepared of vermicompost produced from fruit, vegetable and cotton waste by redworms (Eisenia fetida Sav., Lumbricidae); tap water served as control treatment. Foliar application (spraying) of vermicompost extracts did not affect plant growth, biomass or nutrient allocation, or yields and number of fruits of the three tomato varieties; however, for several dates it significantly reduced the...

Einfluss von Komposten und Gärgut auf die Bodenfruchtbarkeit Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques G.; Berner, Alfred; Mayer, Jochen; Schleiss, Konrad.

Effects of organic fertilisers and compost extracts on organic tomato production Organic Eprints
Ghorbani, R; Koocheki, A; Jahan, M; Asadi, G A.
The effects of various fertilizers and different compost extracts on crop health and tomato yield were studied in the field in 2004–2005 in two locations in Iran. Treatments included different fertilizers (cattle, sheep and chicken manures, green waste and household composts and chemical fertilizers) and five aqueous extracts (from cattle manure, chicken manure, green-waste and house-hold composts and water as control). The effect of fertilizer type on tomato yield was significant in both locations (P < 0.05). Organic fertilizer use did not obtain higher yields compared to using chemical fertiliser. Generally, chicken manure and green-waste compost led to the highest and lowest tomato yield among different organic fertilizers, respectively. The effect...

Pugliese, Massimo; Gilardi, Giovanna; Gullino, Maria Lodovica; Garibaldi, Angelo.

Inhibition of the apple scab pathogen Venturia inaequalis and the grapewine downy mildew pathogen Plasmopara viticola by extracts of green waste compost Organic Eprints
Larbi, M.; Gobat, J.-M.; Fuchs, J. G..
Extracts of green waste compost have been shown to inhibit plant diseases. In this study, the factors influencing the mechanism of inhibition of apple scab (Venturia inaequalis) and grapevine downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) were studied. Extracts were prepared from samples of 30 composts from commercial composting plants. Composts were extracted with 1:2 or 1:5 water for 2 or 7 days. Extracts were applied to seedling of apple and grapevine. The seedlings were artificially inoculated with V. inaequalis or P. viticola, respectively and incubated under controlled conditions. After inoculation, severity of diseases and lesion diameter were measured. The incubation time and the compost/water ratio did not influence the capacity of the extracts to protect the...

The use of organic certified compost to control soilborne diseases caused by Phytophthora spp. Organic Eprints
Pugliese, Massimo; Gullino, M. Lodovica; Garibaldi, Angelo.
Soilborne pathogens can cause serious damages to economically important crops. Control of these diseases has traditionally depended upon rotations and soil quality improvement strategies. Compost has shown a suppressive activity against soilborne pathogens, and its use may decrease the severity of root rot diseases, optimize waste recycling and increase yields in organic farming. An organic certified compost produced from biowaste, green and yard wastes in a composting plant in the North-West of Italy, has been analysed for its suppressiveness against Phytophthora disease. The organic certified compost has been compared with a conventional compost produced in the same composting plant and with a peat substrate. In the first group of trials, composts...

Suppressive effects of yard waste composts on Pythium spp. and Phytophthora spp. damping-off - a review about several research studies Organic Eprints
Bruns, Dr Christian; Hagn, Dr Alexandra; Schloter, Dr Michael; Michel, Dr Kerstin; Ludwig, Prof.Dr. Bernard.
In three long-term studies Yard Waste Composts (YWC) turned out to be sustainable suppressive to Pythium and Phytophthora root rot reducing the disease up to 98%. This was shown under lab and commercial conditions with composts from model and pilot-scale systems. Though suppression was related to microbial activity of the media we could not find a single microbial indicator for suppression over a wide range of samples. High quality YWC of different age showed distinct DNA fingerprints but similar suppressive effects. Thus, still it remains unclear what kind of microbial populations and functions are affecting disease suppression. However, non-destructive near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) turned out to predict suppression at least satisfactorily.
