Yield and quality (bulb size, sugar content and composition, pungency, initial sprout growth) of early and late transplanted and directly sown onions (cv. Sturon) were compared in field experiments (2009-2011) at different intensities of weeding (weed-free or mechanical weed control only). Early transplanting (weed-free) resulted in the highest yield and best quality performance, whereas late transplanting combined with mechanical weed control only (including harrowing weeds before transplanting onions) resulted in medium yield and quality, however, at a relatively low work-input. It is suggested that infection by powdery mildew was the key limiting factor in the development of yield and quality in late-transplanted and directly-sown onions. |

At the time for weed control, either chemical or physical, the potential yield of the crop (and thus the potential size of the yield loss due to weeds) is very uncertain, as only a minor part of the growing season has passed and the time for the major yield formation is after the weed control. The aim of this study was to investigate four scenarios of using sensor-based reflectance, vegetation cover- and canopy structure measurements in the early growth stages to estimate the potential yield of four pure spring barley varieties and four variety mixtures of spring barley grown in competition with weeds under two different nutrient levels in two years. |

The appropriate combination of crops and green manures prevents spread of perennial weeds and increases crop yields and quality. Weed-suppressing crop rotations are absolutely essential for sustainable organic arable farming. Practical recommendation Basic rules • Implement green manures, such as clover or lucerne, in at least 20 % of the rotation. • Do not grow more than 50 % of cereals with low weed competitiveness in the rotation. Do not cultivate such crops for more than 2 consecutive years. • In fields with prevalent high weed pressure cultivate only crops with high weed competitiveness. Points to consider in case of high weed pressure: • Do not grow grain legumes where perennial weeds are a problem. Late harvest in combination with loose... |

Glucosinolates are allelochemicals present in all Brassica plants. Upon hydrolysis by endogenous enzymes they produce a series of biologically active compounds, such as isothiocyanates and their deriva-tives among others. These compounds have marked fungicidal, nematocidal and herbicidal effects and therefore their use as biodegradable natural products for crop protection has attracted much attention in the last years. A number of these compounds, either individually or in combination, were tested against Sinapis alba and Lollium perenne in Petri dishes bio-assays. C50 values as low as 0.7 and 0.2 mM were obtained. This may open the possibility for using glucosinolate hydrolysis products as herbicides. |

Weeds are a perpetual challenge in Organic agriculture. However, they serve multiple ecosystem services and a low competitive weed cover can be tolerated. Adding to this, is the fact that only a few species prove problematic for both the crop and the farmer. The international PRODIVA project researches the effect of crop diversity strategies on the diversity of weed communities, hypothesizing that by increasing the weed diversity, the development of problematic weeds will mitigated. A preparatory study was conducted to list the most problematic weed species in spring sown cereals in the countries involved with PRODIVA. For this a literature review was conducted in all participating countries, collecting local sources including grey literature. This was... |

I arbetet... |
