Protein hydrolysates from yeast and pig blood as alternative raw materials in microdiets for gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) larvae ArchiMer

In this study, we have evaluated the incorporation of two types of protein hydrolysates at 9 and 12% levels of inclusion, one from yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, YPH) and another one from pig blood (PBPH), in microdiets for gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurora) larvae, and compared these results to a microdiet containing fish protein hydrolysate and another group only fed with enriched live prey (rotifers and Artemia). The trial consisted in substituting up to 75% (wt/wt) the enriched Artemia with the experimental microdiets from 15 to 40 days post-hatch, whereas larvae were exclusively fed on microdiets from 40 to 55 dph. Expression and activities of pancreatic enzymes in developing sea bass larvae (Dicentrarchus labrax) in relation to intact and hydrolyzed dietary protein; involvement of cholecystokinin ArchiMer

In order to assess the influence of dietary protein on digestive enzyme expression and cholecystokinin (CCK) content in sea bass larvae, four groups of larvae were fed experimental diets from mouth opening until day 42: three isonitrogenous diets with increasing protein hydrolysate levels (0%, 14% and 46% of crude matter) and one diet incorporating starch. The groups fed high starch or high protein hydrolysate level exhibited the lowest growth. The final weight in these groups was 9.5 and 5.6 mg, respectively, whereas it reached approximately 20.0 mg in the groups fed 0% or 14% protein hydrolysate level. Substitution of live food by formulated diets in marine fish larvae ArchiMer

Until recently, it was considered impossible to feed newly hatched marine fish species with a compound diet. Substituting a compound diet for live prey was performed several weeks after hatching, depending on the species. Compound diets were well ingested at the early stage but larvae died with a gut full of food, suggesting that larvae were unable to digest the compound diet. Today, consumers are looking for functional foods that promote health and prevent certain diseases in addition to provide nutritional requirements. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant and cytotoxic properties of Liza klunzingeri protein hydrolysates. Fish protein hydrolysates (FPHs) were prepared from L. klunzingeri muscle using enzymatic hydrolysis with papain at enzyme/substrate ratios of 1:25 and 1:50 for 45, 90 and 180 min. The antioxidant activities of the FPHs were investigated through five antioxidant assays. The cytotoxic effects on 4T1 carcinoma cell line were also evaluated.
