Emergence of human resilience in coastal ecosystems under environmental change Ecology and Society
Matin, Nilufar; Stockholm Environment Institute, University of York; neela.matin@york.ac.uk; Taylor, Richard; Stockholm Environment Institute, Oxford Centre; richard.taylor@sei-international.org.
Resilience has been studied in a number of disciplines, predominantly in psychosocial and ecological sciences. Although there are striking similarities in their approaches, the psychosocial tradition has centered on the family and its immediate surroundings, whereas the social-ecological approach has focused on macrosystems that stop at the family level. Recently, the need for bridging these gaps has been echoed by researchers from both these traditions, particularly for promoting resilience of individuals and their wider environment in the context of natural disasters and climate change. However, a new synthesis of social-ecological and behavioral theories integrating multiple dynamic systems that interact across levels is strikingly rare. We addressed...

Genetic counseling and presymptomatic testing programs for Machado-Joseph disease: lessons from Brazil and Portugal Genet. Mol. Biol.
Schuler-Faccini,Lavínia; Osorio,Claudio Maria; Romariz,Flavia; Paneque,Milena; Sequeiros,Jorge; Jardim,Laura Bannach.
Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) is an autosomal dominant, late-onset neurological disorder and the most common form of spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) worldwide. Diagnostic genetic testing is available to detect the disease-causing mutation by direct sizing of the CAG repeat tract in the ataxin 3 gene. Presymptomatic testing (PST) can be used to identify persons at risk of developing the disease. Genetic counseling provides patients with information about the disease, genetic risks, PST, and the decision-making process. In this study, we present the protocol used in PST for MJD and the relevant observations from two centers: Brazil (Porto Alegre) and Portugal (Porto). We provide a case report that illustrates the significant ethical and psychological issues...

Barata,Anna; Malouf,Jorge; Gutierrez,Mar; Mateo,Gracia María; Sambeat,Maria Antònia; Gich,Ignasi; Cadafalch,Josep; Wulff,Juan; Domingo,Pere.
OBJECTIVE: To study whether patients with HIV-1 associated lipodystrophy (LD) on highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART) have more psychopathology and worse psychosocial adjustment than a similar group without this syndrome. METHODS: In a cross-sectional, observational study we compared 47 HIV-1 infected patients with LD (LD group) with 39 HIV-1 infected patients without LD (non-LD group). All participants were on HAART. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Goldberg Health Questionnaire (GHQ-60) were administered. Levels of familial, work and social adjustment and adjustment to stressful events were evaluated in a semi-structured interview. Clinical information was extracted from the clinical...
