In the discussion regarding the climate-relevance of foodstuffs, the terms regionalism and non-regionalism are often at the center of public debate. Hereby the often much higher CO2-emissions which are generated in agriculture and its inputs as well as in foodstuff processing are regularly neglected. It is also the case that many CO2-balances do not pay due attention – or just do not incorporate - land use change or the climate specific advantages of organic farming. Root growth and nitrate uptake of three different catch crops in deep soil layers 21

Catch crops can reduce NO3 losses from leaching, but little is known about the importance of deep rooting for the efficiency of NO3 depletion. In a field experiment, we investigated the N uptake and root growth of three types of catch crops using minirhizotrons (glass tubes of 70-mm o.d.) reaching 2.4 m. Our purpose was to evaluate minirhizotron methodology and the importance of deep rooting in the ability of catch crops to take up NO3 from deep soil layers. Biochar, a carbon-rich, porous pyrolysis product of organic residues, is evaluated as an option to tackle major problems of the global food system. Applied to soil, biochar can sequester carbon and have beneficial effects on nitrogen (N) cycling, thereby enhancing crop yields and reducing nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. There is little understanding of the underlying mechanisms, but many experiments indicated increased yields and manifold changes in N transformation, suggesting an increase in N use efficiency. Studie se zabývá porovnáním pěstitelských technologií vybraných plodin (brambory, pšenice) pěstovaných v konvenčním a ekologickém systému hospodaření ve vztahu k produkci emisí CO2. Výpočet emisí byl stanoven za pomocí softwarového programu SIMA Pro. Cílem práce je vyhodnotit vliv jednotlivých agrotechnických faktorů na zatížení životního prostředí emisemi CO2 v obou systémech hospodaření.

Im Rahmen des Forschungsschwerpunktes „Ökologischer Landbau und extensive Landnutzungssysteme“ wurden auf dem Versuchsgut für Ökologischen Landbau der Universität Kiel (Lindhof) in den Jahren 1999-2003 Untersuchungen zur Optimierung des N-Transfers vom Kleegras zur Folgefrucht Getreide durchgeführt. Als Versuchsfaktoren wurde die Kleegras-Bewirtschaftung (3x Schnittgutabfuhr, 2x Schnittgutabfuhr + 1x Mulchen, 3x Mulchen), die Umbruchart (Pflug, Fräse + Pflug), der Umbruchtermin (Herbstumbruch/ Winterweizen, Frühjahrsumbruch/ Sommerweizen bzw. An assessment of nitrogen fixation in 'organically managed' spring-sown lupins and leaching under a following winter cereal 21

Three spring-sown species of lupins (Bora, Prima and Wodjil) and peas were compared in terms of N fixation and subsequent leaching under a following winter cereal crop. Although peas out-yielded lupins (5.4 t compared with ca 3.5 t grain, respectively), the yellow lupin (Wodjil) fixed more N than peas (180 compared with 120 kg N ha-1) and all three lupins contained more protein (> 30%) than the peas (22%). Wodjil was the most effective at suppressing weeds, carrying only 12% of the weed burden found in fallow plots, followed by peas (19%). Winter leaching amounted to > 50 kg nitrate-N ha-1 from under the winter cereal, regardless of whether the previous treatment was a legume crop or was left fallow. Einleitung und Problemstellung Aufgrund des Verzichtes auf den Einsatz mineralischer Stickstoffdüngemittel im ökologischen Landbau kommt der biologischen N-Fixierung (BNF) eine zentrale Rolle zu. Biologische Fixierung von Stickstoff aus der Atmosphäre ist das Produkt einer Symbiose zwischen Leguminosen (Fam. Fabaceae) und knöllchenbildenden Bakterien der Gattung Rhizobium. Bei der Nutzung von Futterleguminosen wird im Wesentlichen zwischen zwei Nutzungsverfahren unterschieden: Nutzung der Leguminose als Feldfutterpflanze bei tierhaltenden Betrieben (Schnittnutzung) und Nutzung der Leguminosen als Gründüngung vorwiegend bei viehloser Landwirtschaft (Mulchnutzung). Økologisk jordbrug er sammenligneligt med det konventionelle, når det gælder udledning af den stærke drivhusgas lattergas (N2O) fra dyrkningsjorden. Vores undersøgelse viser, at økologisk jordbrug bør tilstræbe højere høstudbytter som et middel til at reducere N2O-udledningen per produceret enhed.

The effects of nitrogen (N) availability related to fertilizer type, catch crop management, and rotation composition on cereal yield and grain N were investigated in four organic and one conventional cropping systems in Denmark using the FASSET model. The four-year rotation studied was: spring barley–(faba bean or grass-clover)– potato–winter wheat. Experiments were done at three locations representative of the different soil types and climatic conditions in Denmark. Problemstellung/Ziele: Im niederschlagsarmen Ackerbaugebiet Ostösterreichs dominiert auch im Ökologischen Landbau die viehlose Bewirtschaftungsform. Aufgrund des Verbotes von mineralischen Düngemitteln sowie der Zufuhrbeschränkung organischer Düngemittel muss der Stickstoffbedarf über den Einsatz von Futter- und Körnerleguminosen in der Fruchtfolge gedeckt werden. Die Nutzung von Futter-leguminosen erfolgt überwiegend als Grünbrache (Mulchnutzung). Üblich ist Luzerne in Reinsaat oder als Luzerne-Gräsergemenge. On-farm evaluation of nitrogen leaching rates from organic crop rotations under consideration of previous crop, with special emphasis on legumes 21

Legume supported crop rotations are of high importance in organic farming due to the biological nitrogen fixation as well as the high crude protein content, which is needed in animal production. The cultivation of legumes is depending on the farm management type, e.g. cash crop or dairy cow farm. For the evaluation of legume based cropping systems especially the risk of nitrogen leaching is important for a sustainable production. In this study the NO3-N-load during the winter seepage period is evaluated for a cash crop and a dairy cow rotation that comprises different types and shares of legumes in mono- and intercropping.

Effects of catch crop type and root depth on nitrogen leaching and yield of spring barley 21

Catch crop root growth and nitrogen (N) uptake from both shallower and deeper soil layers is important for N management in arable farming system particularly in climates where excess winter precipitation induces N leaching. We simulated the root growth and biomass yield of three common catch crops [chicory (Cichorium intybus L.), fodder radish (Raphanus sativus L.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)] and their effect on soil mineral N in different soil layers by using the FASSET model. SIMULATING WINTER WHEAT YIELD AND NITROGEN LEACHING FROM ORGANIC AND CONVENTIONAL CROP ROTATIONS 21

This work evaluates the effects of growing a green manure crop or a legume crop in winter wheat yield and on nitrate leaching, in an irrigated crop rotation. Results are also compared with a conventional cropping system. Simulations with the field version of the FASSET model (Berntsen et al., 2003) were done to evaluate the performance of the model to predict winter wheat dry matter yield. The simulated leaching from the different cropping systems was evaluated during the rotation period.
