The abundance and species composition of natural enemies (spiders and carabid beetles) and some of their important arthropod food sources (microarthropods, dipterans and hymenopterans) were sampled by soil extraction, pitfall traps and sticky traps in winter wheat placed in an organic crop with undersown catch crops and animal manure (slurry). The working hypothesis was that the undersown crops and animal manure would stimulate the microarthropods and other food sources, thereby enhancing the abundance of natural enemies. The ANOVA analyses revealed no impact of manuring and undersown catch crops on the microarthropods, but there was a larger abundance of most predator groups in the manured plots. There was not found any impact of undersown crops on the... |

1 Agricultural intensification not only alters the structure of arthropod communities, but also may affect biotic interactions by altering the availability of basal resources. We analyzed variations in stable isotope ratios (15N/14N and 13C/12C) of fertilizers, plants, prey and generalist predators in organic and conventional farming systems in a long-term agricultural experiment [DOK trial (bioDynamic, bioOrganic, Konventionell)]. Two basal resources with pronounced differences in carbon isotope signatures, wheat litter (C3 plant) and maize litter (C4 plant), were used to uncover differences in food web properties between the two farming systems (conventional versus organic). 2 Predators incorporated significantly higher proportions of carbon from wheat... |

Carabid populations (species diversity and abundance) in different crops were investigated during the period from April to July 1993 to 1995. The study was carried out on two farms in North-Western Switzerland. Nine fields with winter cereals (4x wheat, 2x spelt, 2x barley, lx rye), three rape fields, five spring cultures (3x maize, lx soybeans, lx potatoes) and an arable meadow were studied. In winter cereals, more carabid species were found than in spring cultures. In barley, we recorded fewer carabid species and individuals, larger numbers of hygrophilaus carabids and a more even population structure than in the other cereals. In rape, we recorded the highest numbers of carabid species and individuals, and very large numbers of Amara similata and A... |

Organic farming may contribute substantially to future agricultural production worldwide by improving soil quality and pest control, thereby reducing environmental impacts of conventional farming. We investigated in a comprehensive way soil chemical, as well as below and aboveground biological parameters of two organic and two conventional wheat farming systems that primarily differed in fertilization and weed management strategies. Contrast analyses identified management related differences between "herbicide-free" bioorganic (BIOORG) and biodynamic (BIODYN) systems and conventional systems with (CONFYM) or without manure (CONMIN) and herbicide application within a long-term agricultural experiment (DOK trial, Switzerland). Soil carbon content was... |

Intercropping combines the temporal and spatial dimensions of crop diversification and offers a variety of ways to shape agroecosystem ecology and productivity. It has been most used with forage legumes for biological nitrogen fixation, but it might deliver also other, less known benefits such as buffering from weeds, pests and abiotic stresses, support for beneficial biota and greater yielding per acreage. Productivity gains are imperative for developing organic agriculture. We found that legumes added as intercrops had a positive impact on both a cereal and an oilseed co-crop yield under low fertilization, indicating that intercropping can support ecological intensification. Both additive and substitutive intercropping designs resulted in overyielding.... |

Description Concern has been mounting in recent years about the increasing problem of ergot contamination in wheat. This has resulted in greater numbers of grain loads being rejected for milling and in seed failing to reach the certification standards. Recent changes in farming systems have been implicated, in particular the introduction of grass margins in arable fields, encouraged by CAP reform. The risk is that flowering grasses in the margins will become infected by ergot and act as a source of inoculum for the adjacent wheat crop as well as adding to the reservoir of ergots available to initiate the next season’s infection cycle. Other trends contributing to the increased ergot problem may include poor control of grass weeds because of increased... |

Previous studies suggest widespread positive responses of biodiversity to organic farming. Many of these studies, however, have been small-scale. This project tested the generality of habitat and biodiversity differences between matched pairs of organic and non-organic farms containing cereal crops in lowland England on a large-scale across a range of taxa including plants, insects, birds and bats. The extent of both cropped and un-cropped habitats together with their composition and management on a range of scales were also compared. Organic farms was likely to favour higher levels of biodiversity and indeed organic farms tended to support higher numbers of species and overall abundance across most taxa. However, the magnitude of the response differed... |

Agrobiodiversity can improve the sustainability of cropping systems in a context of low external inputs and unpredictable climate change. Agrobiodiversity strategies to grow wheat are breeding ad hoc cultivars for organic and low-input systems, wheat–legume intercrops and living mulches, cultivar mixtures, and the use of genetically heterogeneous populations. However, applying those strategies can fail due the lack of a well-focused framework. Therefore, we need a better integration between breeding and management and a clear focus on crop traits related to key agroecosystem services. Here, we review the use of agrobiodiversity in wheat production, focusing on breeding and management. We discuss five agroecosystem services: (1) weed reduction, (2) nitrogen... |
