Eco-functional intensification by cereal-grain legume intercropping in organic farming systems for increased yields, reduced weeds and improved grain protein concentration Organic Eprints
Bedoussac, Laurent; Journet, Etienne-Pascal; Hauggaard-Nielsen, Henrik; Naudin, Christophe; Corre-Hellou, Guénaëlle; Prieur, Loïc; Jensen, Erik Steen; Justes, Eric.
Organic farming is based on to rely on a higher cropping systems diversity than its conventional counterpart and is regarded as one prototype to enhance the sustainability of agriculture and cereal-rich cropping systems. Nevertheless, organic arable crop rotations in temperate regions consist mainly of sole crops (SC; pure stands), with diverse pastures in farming systems with livestock being an exception (Hauggaard-Nielsen et al. 2001b). In organic farming, nitrogen (N) availability can be limiting especially in the absence of livestock (David et al. 2005ab) and causes cereal yield depressions and lower protein contents. For these reasons, integrating legumes with symbiotic fixation of atmospheric N2 is essential for balancing nitrogen exports from the...

Faba bean in cropping systems Organic Eprints
Jensen, Erik Steen; Peoples, Mark B.; Hauggaard-Nielsen, Henrik.
The grain legume/pulse faba bean (Vicia faba L.) is grown world-wide as protein source for food and feed and simultaneously faba bean offers ecosystem services such as N2 fixation and diversification of cropping systems. Even though the global average grain yield has almost doubled during the recent 50 years the area of faba beans has declined with 56% in the same period. This is especially the case for some of the former big producer countries such as China and Egypt. The yield season-to-season of faba bean and development of an industrialized agriculture based on fossil fuels (= N fertilizers, heavy mechanization) are some of the explanations for this development. Studies of faba bean in cropping systems have focussed on the effect of faba bean as a...

Sustainability assessment of wheat production using Emergy Organic Eprints
Coppola, F.; Haugaard-Nielsen, H.; Bastianoni, S.; Østergård, H..
Sustainability of crop production has to be given high priority when global biomass resources are limited. Here emergy evaluation is applied in order to assess sustainability of crop production exemplified by winter wheat. Emergy evaluation takes into account all inputs involved in a production system (i.e. renewable and non-renewable, local and imported) and transforms them into a common measure of direct and indirect solar energy requirement. The evaluation of winter wheat production is conducted by comparing conventional and organic management on two soil types using Danish reference conditions. The resource use efficiency of wheat production per kg biomass is higher using conventional management practices. This is due to high yield based on large use...

Směsky v ekologickém zemědělství Organic Eprints
Hunady, Igor.

Estimating nitrogen supply and cereal crop yield in organic crop production Organic Eprints
Olesen, Jørgen E.; Sørensen, P..
Hitherto it has been difficult for farmers to predict the effects of various sources of nitrogen (N) supply in organic farming, since these vary greatly in quality and thus in effect on crop yield. This has limited the planning of organic farming crop rotations and the application of manure and other mobile N sources to the crops, since the effect on crop yield would not easily be estimated. Here we used data from long-term organic crop rotation experiments in Denmark to determine the contribution of various N sources to yield of winter wheat and spring barley. The results showed consistent effects of N in soil organic matter, in organic matter applied to soils, in catch crops, in applied manure and of weed pressure. This opens the possibility for building...

Intercropping, an application of ecological principles to improve nitrogen use efficiency in organic farming systems Organic Eprints
Bedoussac, Laurent; Journet, Etienne-Pascal; Hauggaard-Nielsen, Henrik; Naudin, Christophe; Corre-Hellou, Guénaëlle; Prieur, Loïc; Jensen, Erik Steen; Justes, Eric.
Increasing concerns about environmental impacts and reduction of inputs require a transformation of current cropping systems for better efficiency and sustainability (Cox and Atkins 1979; Jackson and Piper 1989; Vandermeer et al. 1998; Griffon 2006). New agronomic solutions are needed including multiple objectives like i) yield, ii) quality, iii) provision of ecological benefits and iv) the adaptation of production systems to climate change. Organic farming is regarded as a prototype to enhance the sustainability of present cereal-rich cropping systems. Organic farming is in general assumed to rely on higher crop diversity than its conventional counterpart. Crop rotation and crop management effects on cereal yields in arable organic farming in Denmark Organic Eprints
Olesen, J.E.; Askegaard, M.; Rasmussen, I.A.; Kristensen, K..
One of the main challenges in organic crop production is to ensure high and stable crop yields. In this study we used data from a 12 year old crop rotation experiment in Denmark to estimate the contribution of various management factors to yields of winter and spring cereals. The experiment included three factors in two replicates: 1) Grass-clover green manure crop (with and without), 2) catch crop (with and without), and 3) animal manure (with and without). Animal manure was the most important factor for increasing grain yield of cereal crops, but also grass-clover and catch crop contributed considerably to increasing yields. The grass-clover had a larger long-term effect on grain yields on the sandy loam soils than on the sandy soil. Yields were...

Incidence of soil N fertility on the performance of organic forage legume-wheat mixtures. Organic Eprints
Celette, Florian; Goulevant, Gael; Amosse, Camille; David, Christophe.
One of the key issues of organic arable systems is to bring enough nitrogen in the crop rotation to ensure satisfying crop nutrition. Wheat yield in organic agriculture are generally low and variable. Grain yield and grain protein content are strongly affected by N deficiency and weed competition (Casagrande et al., 2009). Nevertheless, the autonomy of the organic cropping systems has to be improved while off-farm inputs have to be limited. The use of N2 fixation from legume plants should then be improved. Previous research had clearly demonstrated the benefits of forage legumes in association to improve N balance and control weed seed bank. However, it is also well known that legume N2 fixation could be limited depending on the soil N fertility. The...
