The interaction between winter pea sole or intercropping and ploughing depth was investigated in field experiments in Northern Germany in the growing seasons 2008/09-2010/11 with regard to weed infestation. A normal-leafed (cv. E.F.B. 33) and a semi-leafless winter pea (cv. James) were grown as sole crops and in intercrops with oilseed rape or triticale. The two ploughing depths were short-term shallow ploughing to a soil depth of 8-10 cm and deep ploughing to 25-27 cm. The normal leafed winter pea cv. E.F.B. 33 showed a better weed suppressive ability than James. Moreover, winter pea-triticale intercrops were more effective than winter pea-oilseed rape intercrops in suppressing weeds. No beneficial effect of intercropping the semi-leafless cv. James and... |

In the future the amount of farm subsidies is no more yield dependent. As a following the optimum of the production function is shifted from yield optimisation to costs minimisation. This forces organic farmers to reduce production costs, because marginal profit of yield increase is lower than the costs of the marginal factor input to raise the yield. Direct drilling proofed to save costs in mainstream cereal production under application of chemical weed and pest control. Expensive weed control in organic farming is the main reason why direct drilling technique in organic farming is hardly applied. The aim of the project is to develop a suitable direct drilling technology for organic cereal production under Finnish conditions that guarantees... |

Tillage modifies soil structure and crop residue distribution and in turn affects the ability of soil micro-organisms to degrade soil organic matter and release nutrients for crop growth. In organic farming, soil microbiological activity is of primary importance as nutrient supply is mainly dependent on the degradation of soil organic matter by soil micro-organisms. The aim of this work was therefore to study, in organic farming, the effects of four tillage systems [mouldboard ploughing (MP), shallow mouldboard ploughing (SMP), reduced tillage (RT) and shallow soil tillage (ST)] on soil structure, soil microbial biomass (SMB) and its potential activity (Cmin) during the first year following the treatments. To study simultaneously the effects of soil... |

Direct drilling of winter wheat in living mulches of white clover resulted in dry matter yields and forage quality of whole crop silage similar to wheat sown after ploughing. Grain yields, however, were lower in the intercropping system than in the sole wheat system. As wheat/clover “bicropping” caused very high grain yields of succeeding crops (oats, rye), it was concluded that the system allows to grow both cash crop and green manure crop in the same year and, therefore, might be a profitable alternative to otherwise common green manures in organic crop rotations. |

Organic farmers are interested in soil conservation by reduced tillage, techniques well known in conventional agriculture to protect soil quality and limit labor time and energy costs. However, organic farming and reduced tillage can modify weeds, soil structure, and thus soil nitrogen (N) mineralization which strongly influences wheat yield and quality. The main objectives of this study were to analyze how reduced tillage applied to organic wheat influenced (1) grain yield, protein concentration, and weed infestation; (2) deoxynivalenol (DON) contamination on grain; (3) technological quality parameters such as dry gluten, zeleny index, falling number, and gluten index; (4) protein composition (F1, F2, F3, F4, and F5 fractions, and UPP, gliadin/glutenin... |

The non-tilled, constantly covered soil has improved water retention and also shows a better carrying capacity during harvest, and is less affected by weed infestation, compaction, nutrient-leaching, and erosion. Stockless farms especially benefit from the nitrogen input of the legume-green manure. • At the beginning of August, carry out 1 to 2 stubble-tillage operations after cereal or rape harvest. • Sow the wintering forage peas in October. • At the end of May, kink the peas' stems with a knife-cylinder roller, after which you drill in the maize with row cleaners. The green manure lying on the ground must be properly dried off for sowing. • The mineralisation performance, lowered due to the soil cover, can be compensated for with focused nitrogen... |
