ABSTRACT We investigated the effect of Alpinia zerumbet essential oil on the quality and shelf life of tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) fillets stored under refrigeration (10.0 ± 0.5 °C) for 14 days. The treatments were A. zerumbet essential oil at 0.75% v v-1 (AEO 0.75%), A. zerumbet essential oil at 1.5% v v-1 (AEO 1.5%) and a control (no essential oil). The sample quality and shelf life were determined by the total psychrotrophic count (TPC) and chemical parameters (pH, total volatile basic nitrogen, centesimal composition and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances - TBARS) at zero, seven and 14 days of storage time. The TPC decreased significantly (p < 0.05) with an A. zerumbetessential oil level of 1.5% until seven days of storage. The...

Recycling of the biomass waste defatted almond meal as a novel nutritional supplementation for cultivated edible mushrooms Agronomy
Pardo-Giménez, Arturo; Carrasco, Jaime; Roncero, José María María; Álvarez-Ortí, Manuel; Cunha Zied, Diego; Pardo-González, Jose Emilio.
Defatted almond meal (DAM) is an useless biomass waste obtained after oil extraction. The substrate designed for mushroom cultivation is achieved through a controlled composting process from agricultural by-products (chicken manure and wheat straw). This work shows the potential of DAM as efficient compost supplement for culturing the species Agaricus bisporus (J.E. Lange) Imbach and Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacq.) P. Kumm. Supplementation during A. bisporus cultivation results in larger mushrooms with a firmer texture and higher dry matter and protein contents in comparing with the non-supplemented substrate. In P. ostreatus, supplementation at a dosage of 15 g kg-1 provided a yield improvement up to 31.8%, compared to the control without supplement. The...

TRS value of sugarcane according to bioenergy and sugar levels Agronomy
Marques, Tadeu Alcides; Neves, Larissa Carolina Gonçalves; Rampazo, Erick Malheiros; Deltrejo Junior, Elvis Lima; Souza, Fernando Caetano; Marques, Patricia Angelica Alves.
In the specific case of sugarcane, producers in Brazil are currently paid by the content of total recoverable sugars (TRS) in the raw material when it reaches the industry, according to CONSECANA: TRS = 9.6316 *PC +9.15 * RSS, where PC is the Pol in cane (apparent sucrose) and RSS are reducing sugars in sugarcane (glucose + fructose). The objective of the project was to propose changes in the procedures used to mathematically determine the TRS, estimating the calorific value of moist cake and weight of moist cake. The final model is then proposed: TRS = 25.9892 + 0.02172*CVmc*WMC+0.536*WMC – 4.14*CVmc + + 4.8158*PC + 4.575*RSS. Thus we obtain the TRS calculated according to the calorific value of moist cake (CVmc), weight of moist cake (WMC), Pol cane (PC)...

Case study about field trial responses of the zero energy storage system CIGR Journal
Islam, M. P.; Morimoto, T.; Hatou, K.; Hassan, L.; Awal, M. A.; Hossain, S. T..
A low cost ‘Zero Energy Cool Chamber (ZECC)’ has been developed for storing fruits and vegetables by usingpassive evaporative mechanism. This paper presents the results of a survey on the farmer’s opinion regarding the exploitationof zero energy storage system. This survey was conducted at Mymensingh district of Bangladesh from 2011 to 2012 and italso revealed that most of the farmers sell their produce to the middlemen just after the harvest. Lack of transportation facility, shortage of energy supply and lack of investment on storage, lower price of vegetables during the harvesting season, farmers in the rural areas often sell their products to the middleman or in the local market at low prices. They are not even able to get the return of invested money...

Effect of Chitosan Coating on Some Quality Properties of Thomson Orange during Storage (A case study in Iran) CIGR Journal
Taghinezhad, Ebrahim; Rasooli Sharabiani, Vali.
Most of the world's consumers have used the natural coatings instead of chemical coatings. In this research, some quality properties of Thomson orange were evaluated using Chitosan edible coating (at concentrations of 0.5, 1 and 2%) and chemical coating of fungicide (Ortho Phenyl Phenol) as compared to uncoated samples during storage for three months. Fruit were maintained in cold storage at 6 °C temperature and 85-90% relative humidity, then pH, total soluble solid (TSS) of orange juice and percentage of fruit weight loss were measured during storage every month. The results showed that weight loss of fruit with 2% chitosan coating was lower than other treatments. Also this treatment had high resistance against fungal attacks due to high values of pH, so...
