Trust in Label Information to Recuperate Consumer's Confidence for Meat: A Compared Analysis among Canada, Italy, and Spain AgEcon
Rosa, Franco; Sanchez Garcia, Mercedes; Barrena Figueroa, Ramo.
The analysis consisted in a field experiment performed by testing the opinions of different consumers groups: two of them located in the European Regions respectively: Friuli-Venezia-Giulia in Italy and Navarra in Spain; a third one located in the Ontario region, Canada. The data were processed by using a multivariate structural equation in the multi-group version. The enquiry was performed in 2003, just after the news about BSE disease were released in some UE countries, and consisted in a regional survey designed ad' hoc and submitted by face to face home made interviews, to collect information about consumer habits, opinions and evidences about trust in the food label. By testing the cross-country consumer's behaviours it was allowed to get evidences...

Firm Survival and Quality Labels in the Food Industry AgEcon
Bontemps, Christophe; Bouamra-Mechemache, Zohra; Simioni, Michel.
Both industry and firm characteristics influence the survival of a firm in an industry over time. Aging, size, structure are factors often discussed in the literature, but public intervention effects -through public quality labeling for example - may also have an effect that is examined here. We use data on French firms producing cheese under public quality label or not over the period 1990-2006. We perform a nonparametric estimation using Kaplan-Meier estimators as well as proportional hazard rate models. Our results confirm existing findings on firm survival determinants. We also shed light on the effect of public intervention into that industry. More precisely, our focus on public quality labeling in the French cheese industry shows that quality label...

Confidence in the Beef Production System as a Key Factor to Mitigate the Impact of BSE on Beef Consumption AgEcon
Barrena Figueroa, Ramo; Sanchez Garcia, Mercedes; Gracia, Azucena; Gil, Jose Maria.
Recent food scares in the food market has caused a reduction in consumer's confidence in the food system that it has induced a significant reduction in consumption in a sector, the beef sector that was already characterized by a saturated trend in quantity terms. In this context, all participants in the beef production system are facing to a great challenge, to retrieve consumer's confidence in the food chain and to mitigate the reduction in beef consumption. The aim of the paper is to analyse the impact of consumer's confidence in the food system as well as other factors on the explanation of food consumption reduction. A structural modelling approach has been used to analyse factors affecting the reduction in beef consumption in two different regions...

Factors Associated to Purchase of Quality-Labelled Beef AgEcon
Sepulveda, Wilmer S.; Maza Rubio, M.T.; Mantecon, Angel R..
The aim of the present study is to identify the factors associated to purchase of quality-labelled beef. For this purpose a total of 364 surveys were carried out on buyers of beef in three Spanish cities. The sample was divided into three groups of buyers according to the beef purchasing habits with a quality label. A logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the differences between groups. The results show the importance of the production region as a quality aspect. Income level, association of quality-labelled beef with “guarantee and tradition” aspects, purchasing frequency, place of purchase, production systems and lifestyles are all variables that enabled us to establish differences between groups.

El distintivo de calidad como indicador de seguridad alimentaria en carne de vacuno y cordero AgEcon
Sanchez Garcia, Mercedes; Sanjuan, Ana Isabel; Akl, George.
Consumers in developed countries are becoming increasingly aware of food safety, that is to say, the influence of food on human health. The public concern is deeper for those products, such as beef, that have suffered gravely from disease (BSE). In this paper, the factors that influence the decision of purchasing two products, fresh lamb and beef, are investigated. The linkage between quality labels and attributes of food safety is also studied. Finally, the conjoint analysis is used to discern differences in preferences between consumers of labelled meat and non-consumers and to estimate the marginal willingness to pay for the main attributes, in particular, for the quality label. Keywords: Quality label, Food security, Conjoint analysis, Marginal...
