A simple HPLC-fluorescence method for the measurement of R,S-sotalol in the plasma of patients with life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias BJMBR
Santos,S.R.; Papini,O.; Omosako,C.E.; Pereira,M.D.; Quintavalle,T.B.G.; Riccio,M.F.; Kurata,A.; Pereira,V.A.; Di-Pietro,G.; Della-Paschoa,O.E.; Danhof,M.; Da-Luz,P.L..
R,S-sotalol, a ß-blocker drug with class III antiarrhythmic properties, is prescribed to patients with ventricular, atrial and supraventricular arrhythmias. A simple and sensitive method based on HPLC-fluorescence is described for the quantification of R,S-sotalol racemate in 500 µl of plasma. R,S-sotalol and its internal standard (atenolol) were eluted after 5.9 and 8.5 min, respectively, from a 4-micron C18 reverse-phase column using a mobile phase consisting of 80 mM KH2PO4, pH 4.6, and acetonitrile (95:5, v/v) at a flow rate of 0.5 ml/min with detection at lex = 235 nm and lem = 310 nm, respectively. This method, validated on the basis of R,S-sotalol measurements in spiked...

COASTAL MAPPING AND KITESURFING ArchiMer
Barde, J.; Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Chassot, E.; Motah, B..
ollecting data on aquatic biodiversity is very challenging because of the difficulty to access underwater ecosystems. Over the years, field surveys have become easier and cheaper with the development of low cost electronics. Commercial and recreational vessels, including sailboats, can now substantially complement expensive scientific surveys and arrays of observation buoys deployed across the world oceans (Pesant et al., 2015, Karsenti et al., 2011). Meanwhile, a large variety of marine animals such as birds, mammals, and fish have become data collection platforms for both biological and environmental parameters through the advent of archival tags. It becomes obvious that data collection in coastal and high seas will become more popular and that citizen...

An approach to calculate a Species Temperature Index for flora based on open data Naturalis
Sparrius, L.B.; Top, G.G. van den; Swaay, C.A.M. van.
To study the relation between changes in local plant communities and shifts in temperature, the temperature niches of the species need to be defined. We calculated the Species Temperature Index (STI) as a proxy for this niche. STI is defined as the mean annual temperature within the range of a species. In this paper, a method is described to calculate the STI for the European flora from open data provided by the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and WorldClim global climate data, for 7254 taxa of European vascular plants, bryophytes, algae, and ascomycetes including lichens. The algorithm accounts for incomplete and unbalanced species distribution data. The Community Temperature Index (CTI) is defined as the weighted mean of the STIs of a...

Migrants’ International Transfers and Educational Expenditure: Empirical Evidence from Albania AgEcon
Cattaneo, Cristina.
The present paper analyses the expenditure behavior of Albanian families. The objective is to cast some light upon the relationship between education expenditure and the volume of remittances, sent from abroad by household members. To assess the existence of an education enhancing effect of remittances, an Engel curve framework is employed, where heterogeneity in interests or in bargaining power among the members within the households is assumed. The empirical estimation accounts for the censored nature of the education expenditure through using Heckman two-step as well as a semiparametric model for sample selection. Finally, quintile regression analysis is employed to investigate whether migrants’ remittances have a differentiated effect on various...

Analysis of Spatial Variation in Flood Risk Perception AgEcon
Atreya, Ajita; Susana, Ferreira.
We use hedonic property models to estimate the spatial variation in flood risk in the city of Albany, GA. In addition to knowing whether a property is in the floodplain, we have a unique dataset with actual inundation maps from tropical storm Alberto that hit Albany in 1994. In the absence of information on the structural damages caused by a flood, having information on the actual inundated area can be useful to tease out information effect of a new flood from potential reconstruction cost. We find that the discount in actually inundated properties is larger which supports our hypothesis that homeowners respond better to what they have visualized (“seeing is believing”) and also the potential reconstruction cost in addition to information effect is...

Analysing Regional Sustainability Through a Systemic Approach: The Lombardy Case Study AgEcon
Caratti, Pietro; Ferraguto, Ludovico.
The intrinsic complexity of the sustainability concept challenges research towards more sophisticated ways to model and assess the dimensions underlying it. However, currently adopted modelling techniques and indicators frameworks are not able to give an integrated assessment through the different components of sustainability, providing incomplete visuals of the reality that they aim to catch. This paper tries to assess how the INSURE methodology can provide a contribution in the analysis of sustainability through indicator frameworks, describing its application to the Lombardy region (Italy). Developed on the course of a 6th European Framework Program – financed project to measure sustainability in the European regions, the methodology provides two...
