There are a number of medicinally active phytochemicals isolated from hawthorn with most of the data generated in studies of those species that are native to Europe and Asia. Comparatively little is known about the North American, specifically the Mexican Crataegus species. The objective of this study was to evaluate phenolic compounds, flavonoids and antioxidant activity of extracts of flowers from six Mexican accessions of Crataegus in order to contribute to the chemistry of the Germplasm Bank accessions at the Universidad Autonóma Chapingo. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method and the flavonoids were identified by HPLC-MS. Quercetin- 3-O-glucoside, quercetin-3-O-rhamnoside, quercetin... |

The radical scavenging activity (RAS), chain-breaking activity, H2O2-scavenging, reducing capacity and total phenolics of four types of onions (Green onion, Yellow, Red and Purple) and garlic were investigated. Total phenolics varied from 30 mg (green onion) to 49 mg.100 g-1 fresh weight (garlic). Garlic extract showed the highest RAS, while green onion showed the lowest one. The chain-breaking activity of green onion extract was higher (0.48) than garlic extract (0.029). Chain-breaking activity of yellow, red and purple onion extracts was 0.19, 0.048 and 0.032 respectively. However, heating treatment (90 ºC, 3h) caused an increase in this activity. Low ability of green onion extract to scavenge hydrogen peroxide was noted (35%), whereas high ability was... |

Abstract Effect of sonication on the blueberry juice was studied by evaluating the pH, viscosity, electric conductivity, color, total sugars, soluble solids, polyphenol, anthocyanidin, and radical scavenging activities. There were not any remarkable (p > 0.05) change in pH and electric conductivity. However, viscosity and color of blueberry juice markedly (p < 0.05) enhanced with the extension of sonication time. Meanwhile, total sugars, soluble solids, polyphenol, and anthocyanidin were obviously enhanced (p < 0.05). Moreover, prominent increase (p < 0.05) was observed on DPPH, superoxide, and hydroxyl radicals scavenging activities of sonicated blueberry juice. The current results exhibited sonication effectively improved blueberry juice... |

Melanin extracted from Auricularia auricula fruiting bodies (AAFB) was examined by element analyzer, amino acid analyzer, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. Elemental composition analysis revealed that main component of AAFB melanin was pheomelanin. Amino acid analysis showed that 16 amino acids were found in AAFB melanin and total amino acid content was 321. 63 mg/g. There were 13 detectable metal elements in AAFB melanin, which was rich in Ca, Fe, Cu and Zn. In addition, AAFB melanin exhibited stronger scavenging activities on 2,2-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, superoxide radical and hydroxyl radical with IC50 values of 0.18, 0.59 and 0.34 mg/mL, respectively. These results indicated that AAFB melanin might be... |

Background Triterpenoids are multifunctional secondary metabolites in plants. But little information is available concerning the actual yield, optimal extraction method and pharmacologic activity with regard to triterpenoids from Jatropha curcas leaves (TJL). Hence, response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the extraction parameters. The effects of three independent variables, namely liquid-to-solid ratio, ethanol concentration and extraction time on TJL yield were investigated. TJL obtained by silica column chromatography was tested against bacterial and fungal species relevant to oral disease and wounds through broth microdilution. Antioxidant activity was assessed using the 2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and... |
