Diurnal variability of rainfall in southwest Amazonia during the LBA-TRMM field campaign of the austral summer of 1999 Acta Amazonica
Marengo,José A.; Fisch,Gilberto; Morales,Carlos; Vendrame,Iria; Dias,Paulo C..
The TRMM-LBA field campaign was held during the austral summer of 1999 in southwestern Amazonia. Among the major objectives, was the identification and description of the diurnal variability of rainfall in the region, associated with the different rain producing weather systems that occurred during the January-February season. By using a network of 40 digital rain gauges implemented in the state of Rondônia, and together with observations and analyses of circulation and convection, it was possible to identify details of the diurnal cycle of rainfall and the associated rainfall mechanisms. Rainfall episodes were characterized by regimes of "low-level easterly" and "westerly" winds in the context of the large-scale circulation. The westerly regime is related...

Soil CO2 efflux in central Amazonia: environmental and methodological effects Acta Amazonica
Zanchi,Fabrício B.; Waterloo,Maarten J.; Kruijt,Bart; Kesselmeier,Jürgen; Luizão,Flávio J.; Manzi,Antônio O.; Dolman,Albertus J..
Soil respiration plays a significant role in the carbon cycle of Amazonian rainforests. Measurements of soil respiration have only been carried out in few places in the Amazon. This study investigated the effects of the method of ring insertion in the soil as well as of rainfall and spatial distribution on CO2 emission in the central Amazon region. The ring insertion effect increased the soil emission about 13-20% for sandy and loamy soils during the firsts 4-7 hours, respectively. After rainfall events below 2 mm, the soil respiration did not change, but for rainfall greater than 3 mm, after 2 hours there was a decrease in soil temperature and respiration of about 10-34% for the loamy and sand soils, with emissions returning to normal after around 15-18...

The drought of the century in the Amazon Basin: an analysis of the regional variation of rainfall in South America in 1926 Acta Amazonica
Williams,Earle; Dall' Antonia,Alaor; Dall' Antonia,Vitoria; Almeida,Jorge Mathias de; Suarez,Francisco; Liebmann,Brant; Malhado,Ana Claudia Mendes.
The most severe drought in tropical South America during the 20th century occurred in 1926. This extreme El Nino year is further documented anecdotally, in an update of the river stage observations at Manaus, and in annual rainfall records. The annual rainfall anomaly is an east-west dipole over tropical South America, with drought to the west over the Amazon basin whose discharge is documented at Manaus, and with a surplus to the east and including the Nordeste region of Brazil. Speculations about a role for aerosol in aggravating the drought are discussed.

POPULATION FLUCTUATION OF Empoasca sp. (HEMIPTERA: CICADELLIDAE) IN A PHYSIC NUT CROP IN MATO GROSSO DO SUL Acta biol.Colomb.
de CARVALHO,Denisar Paggioli; de OLIVEIRA,Harley Nonato.
Physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) is an oilseed, semi-evergreen shrub or small tree of the Euphorbiaceae family, whose seeds contain oil that can be processed into a high quality biofuel. However, there have been reports of arthropods feeding from its leaves, including the green leafhopper Empoasca sp. (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae). The large numbers of this insect, observed in certain periods of the year in many regions of Brazil, are causing damage to the oilseed crops. This study aims at evaluating the fluctuation in green leafhopper population in a physic nut crop in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, to assess possible correlations with rainfall, maximum, average and minimum temperatures. This evaluation was conducted between March 2011 and July 2012. The...

Late Holocene paleoenvironments of the floodplain of the Solimões River, Central Amazonia, based on the palynological record of Lake Cabaliana Acta Botanica
Sá,Natália de Paula; Absy,Maria Lúcia; Soares,Emílio Alberto Amaral.
ABSTRACT The core PD-67 of 160 cm depth was collected from the delta of Lake Cabaliana situated on the Solimões River. Seventeen samples were removed for palynological and sedimentological analysis and three for radiocarbon analysis. Two dry periods, both in the Late Holocene, were observed (2800-2550 cal yr BP, 1450-550 cal yr BP) separated by a wetter phase (2550-1450 cal yr BP). In 2800-2550 cal yr BP, varzea forests of Alchornea, Symmeria, Cecropia, Alternanthera and Asteraceae were predominant. Beginning in 2,550-1450 cal yr BP, the varzea was characterized by pioneer elements, such as Cassia, Laetia, Mabea, Symmeria and Cecropia, and by the expansion of Poaceae, Cyperaceae, Sagittaria, Montrichardia and Asteraceae. In 1450-550 cal yr BP the...

Litterfall, precipitation and nutrient fluxes in a secondary lowland rain forest in Ile-Ife, Nigeria Acta Botanica
Oziegbe,Modupe B.; Muoghalu,Joseph I.; Oke,Samson O..
Litterfall, precipitation and nutrient fluxes were investigated in a 0.25 ha plot of a secondary lowland rain forest in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, for a period of one year. The study determined the magnitude of nutrient fluxes through (litterfall, incident rainfall, throughfall and stemflow) and evaluated the relative importance of these components as pathways of nutrient transport to the soil of this forest. There was a significant monthly variation in litterfall and the highest values of the standing crop of litter occurred from November to March. The concentration of elements in both throughfall and stemflow were higher than those of incidence rainfall. Greater quantities of calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper and nitrogen were deposited annually from the...

Back, Álvaro José; Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária e Extensão Rural de Santa Catarina.
A knowledge of rainfall time distribution is important for several types of hydrological studies related to surface runoff. This study aims to determine the time distribution pattern of heavy rain events in Urussanga, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. It employed recording rainfall charts from the meteorological station of Urussanga (latitude: 28.31° S, longitude: 49.19° W, altitude: 49 m) from 1980 to 2007. Rain events were classified into four types according to the duration quartile in which the greatest amount of precipitation occurred. It is found that type I rain events are more frequent, followed by type II, and these occur predominantly during the summer, while type III and IV rain events are distributed throughout the year. In the summer, rain events...

Mathematical modeling and simulation of hourly precipitation through rectangular pulses - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v33i4.7052 Agronomy
Uggioni, Edison; Universidade do Extremo Sul Catarinense; Back, Álvaro José; Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária e Extensão Rural de Santa Catarina; Vieira, Hamilton Justino; Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária e Extensão Rural de Santa Catarina.
The recorded historical series of precipitation are usually available for short periods of time and with many failures. The use of mathematical modeling to simulate rainfall is a tool used to circumvent this problem and to simulate the operation of water systems in different scenarios. The present study applies mathematical modeling to the hourly pluviometric precipitation data simulation. A pluviographical data set from October 1980 to December 2007 was used in the study. Precipitation data sets were obtained through daily pluviometric digitalization from the Meteorologic Station of Epagri at Urussanga, in southern Santa Catarina, Brazil (latitude 28º 31’ S and longitude 48º 19’ W). To simulate the hourly rain series, the stochastic model was modified...

Effects of tillage direction on sediment yield in Chanchaga Basins CIGR Journal
Kuti, Ibrahim Abayomi.
There is no study on the effect of tillage erosion in the region. Runoff plots (24) were constructed on a similar slope. Now sedimentation tanks were incorporated into runoff measurement using catch-pits to collect coarse and suspended sediment. Quadratic model fits sediment and rainfall, while the exponential model fits runoff and sediment yield. The effect of tillage without a crop was highest on sediment yield. Slope gradients have an effect on sediment deposition in Shatta basin because of the convex and concave landscape. While concave landscape makes the slope gradient to have a none effect on sediment yield in Koropa basin. Ridge made parallel to the slope has a high effect on sediment yield. The study concluded that tillage parallel to the slope...

Climatic characteristics of the 2010-2016 drought in the semiarid Northeast Brazil region Anais da ABC (AABC)
MARENGO,JOSÉ A.; ALVES,LINCOLN M.; ALVALA,REGINA C.S; CUNHA,ANA PAULA; BRITO,SHEILA; MORAES,OSVALDO L.L..
ABSTRACT This study discusses the climatological aspects of the most severe drought ever recorded in the semiarid region Northeast Brazil. Droughts are recurrent in the region and while El Nino has driven some of these events others are more dependent on the tropical North Atlantic sea surface temperature fields. The drought affecting this region during the last 5 years shows an intensity and impact not seen in several decades in the regional economy and society. The analysis of this event using drought indicators as well as meteorological fields shows that since the middle 1990s to 2016, 16 out of 25 years experienced rainfall below normal. This suggests that the recent drought may have in fact started in the middle-late 1990s, with the intense droughts...

Do precipitation and food affect the reproduction of brown brocket deer Mazama gouazoubira (G. Fischer 1814) in conditions of semi-captivity? Anais da ABC (AABC)
Juliá,Juan P.; Peris,Salvador J..
The births of brown brocket deer ( Mazama gouazoubira) in a secondary lower montane forest called "yunga" in northwestern Argentina were compared with rainfall. Analyses were performed with rainfall and flower-fruit fall in an attempt to determine the possible importance of these seasonal variables in birthing. The births were not directly correlated with rainfall, but rather with the flower and fruit fall of exotic plant species. This may be related to favor the development of fawns, which eat the new and more digestible plant parts, accessible one month after their births. The non-seasonal births observed around the year could be related to the selection by the deer of some plant species that have been introduced into the region ( Prunus, Morus and...

Plant growth regulator losses in cotton as affected by adjuvants and rain Ciência Rural
Echer,Fábio Rafael; Rosolem,Ciro Antonio.
Most of Brazilian cotton is produced in regions where annual rainfall exceeds 1,500mm, hence plant growth regulators (PGR) may be washed from the leaves before being absorbed. The objective of this research was to evaluate mepiquat chloride and chlormequat chloride washing from cotton leaves by rains occurring at different moments post spraying. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse. Both PGR were sprayed to cotton at pin-head square at 15g ha-1 a.i. with and without a silicon-based adjuvant, and simulated rains were applied at 0, 0.75, 1.5, 3.0, 6.0, 12.0 and 24 hours after spraying, plus a control without rainfall. Addition of silicon adjuvant increased PGR uptake. Rainfall occurring up to 24 hours after spraying resulted in some PGR loss from...

CLIMATOLOGICAL WATER BALANCE WITH DATA ESTIMATED BY TROPICAL RAINFALL MEASURING MISSION FOR THE DOCE RIVER BASIN REA
Louzada,Franciane L. R. de O.; Xavier,Alexandre C.; Pezzopane,José E. M..
ABSTRACT The Climatic Water Balance (CLIMWB) is very used in the climatic characterization and can also offer important contribution in the identification of the water demand for irrigation of a region. For this, reliable precipitation data with good spatial coverage is required. The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite -TRMM-3B43-v7 is a partnership between NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and Japan's Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), which estimates rainfall data for the tropics region. The aim of this study is to evaluate the CLIMWB obtained by the Thornthwaite & Mather method (1955), with estimated rainfall data with the 3B43 product versus those generated with rainfall data and to map pixel-by-pixel water...

Estimation of climatological water deficit in an experimental watershed in the brazilian cerrado REA
GOTARDO,JACKELINE T.; RODRIGUES,LINEU N.; GOMES,BENEDITO M..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to estimate the probability of climatological water deficit in an experimental watershed in the Cerrado biome, located in the central plateau of Brazil. For that, it was used a time series of 31 years (1982–2012). The probable climatological water deficit was calculated by the difference between rainfall and probable reference evapotranspiration, on a decennial scale. The reference evapotranspiration (ET0) was estimated by the standard FAO-56 Penman-Monteith method. To estimate water deficit, it was used gamma distribution, time series of rainfall and reference evapotranspiration. The adherence of the estimated probabilities to the observed data was verified by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov nonparametric test, with significance level...

Characterization of water availability in a hydrographic basin REA
Arai,Fabiane K.; Pereira,Silvio B.; Gonçalves,Geula G. G..
The quantitative knowledge of hydrological parameters (rainfall and flow) and their spatial and temporal variability on the regions or basins should be understood as essential to the efficient planning and management of water resources. Because the Ivinhema Basin, located in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, represents an important inductor on the region agricultural development, characterized as a major producer of grains and meat, it was used to characterize the hydrological study. Knowing the rainfall, flow and drainage area of each of the studied affluent, it was calculated the proportion of contribution of the affluent. To that end, it was proposed the concepts of potential and real contributions, aiming to identify the proportion of...

Macroinvertebrates under stochastic hydrological disturbance in Cerrado streams of Central Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Saito,Victor S.; Mazão,Gustavo R..
In the Cerrado vegetation, where the seasonal is well defined, rainfall has an important role in controlling the flow of streams and consequently on the structure of macroinvertebrates community. Despite the effects of rainfall associated with seasonality are well studied, little is known about the effects of stochastic rains on the community. In the present study we evaluated the structure and faunal composition of four first-order streams in Central Brazil during the dry season in two years, with and without stochastic rains. Community sampling was done by colonization of boards of high density polyethylene (HDPE), removed after one month submerged in streams. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) performed indicated no difference in rarefied richness between the...
