In wet season, rainfed area in Lower Northern of Thailand has has an abundance of soil and water availability which is suitable for growing a photoperiod-sensitive rice with high yield potential. However, favorite rice varieties often have low yield and are susceptible to rice pests. Breeding for high yield and resistance to disease and insect pests while maintaining good eating quality is, therefore, the major approaches in changing rice varieties for good qualities, increased yield and adequate consumption. A promising lines, PSL97060-17-CNT-1-2-1, was obtained from three-way cross between KLG88028-22-1-2-2 and F1 of SPR88096-17-3-2-2 and IR60 at Phitsanulok Rice Research Center. Selection in F4-F6 was subsequently conducted at Chai Nat Rice Research...

ขาวเจ๊ก ข้าวนาน้ำฝนสายพันธุ์ดีเด่นจังหวัดชัยนาท Thai Agricultural
Anakkapon Boonchuay; Somphong Choeyphan.
Chai Nat province still has some non-irrigated areas. Farmers in those areas can grow rice once a year with rainfed water. They usually grow good quality rice varieties for consumption in family and neighborhood. “Khao Jek” is local rice variety widely grow in Den Yai and Pri Nok-yung of Hankha district. The cooked eating qualities have soft texture and aroma. It’s the most favorite variety of local farmers. Chai Nat Rice Research Center collected this variety in 2004 and continuously improved by pureline selection, observation, intra-station, inter-station, farmers’ field yield trial, yield stability trial and promising line test. Results found that this variety is a non-glutinous photoperiod sensitive rice variety, having early maturity being harvested...

IR57514-PMI-5-B-1-2 สายพันธุ์ข้าวสำหรับสภาพภูมิอากาศที่เปลี่ยนแปลง Thai Agricultural
Anuchart Kotchasatit.
Elite line, IR57514-PMI-5-B-1-2 was bred at International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in 1987. Then it has been selected at Phimai Rice Research Station. After that, yield trials were conducted under rainfed lowland condition in North and Northest Thailand. When grown in famer field under drought prone during 1996 - 1999, this line gaved the highest yield by average 542 kg/rai and inter-station yield trials during 2002 - 2014 it yielded by average 598 kg/rai which were 22 and 17% higher than KDML105 in the tested field conditions. The adventages of this line are drought resistance, submergence tolelance, resistant to rice blast disease and high adaptation to grow under rainfed condition. Therefore, it is suitable for reducing the risk from climate...

Population dynamic of golden apple snails related in rice planting phase at Chiang Rai provinces was conducted at irrigated rice field and rainfed rice field in Pan District from January 2012 – November 2014. The objective of this research is to determine the dynamics of golden apple snail population, which snails (applied removal sampling method) were randomly sampled consecutively by Quadrat sampling (1x1 m) at two-week interval. The results showed that the highest snails - density at irrigated rice field was in after harvesting phase but at rainfed rice field the highest density was in booting stage. Snail density showed slightly correlated with water level in rainfed rice field (rs = 0.517, P = 0.011, n = 23) but there was no correlation observed at...

High variation occurs due to climate changes includes low rainfall and uncertain distribution pattern. This affects rice production system. Farmers currently adjust their production system in order to minimize risks of crop losses. This study aims to develop the most suitable cultural practices and chemical fertilizer application for delayed transplanting crop. The adjusted production system to deal with the climate change includes a choice of varieties, cultural practices, water management, and nutrient management. The results from the farmers' interview at the beginning of the project indicated that most farmers faced the problem related to insufficient amount of water for the whole cropping season, late rainfall, dry spell or even drought problem. The...

This activity was carried out during 2009 – 2012 under the project on research and development of upland rice for the upper Northeastern Thailand by KKN_RRC, CPA_RRC, SKN_RRC, UDN_RRC, NRM_RRC, NKI_RRC and UBN_RRC. Ten accessions of Pa-yah Leum Gaeng collected from farmers’ fields and 1,458 other upland rice accessions from the NRGB were evaluated for their adaptation and farmers acceptance on agronomic characteristics, grain quality and eating quality. The selected Pa-yah Leum Gaeng are glutinous upland rice with erected plant type, moderately strong stem and long-slender leaf with light green color. The internode color is yellow. The flowering date is about September 20th. The average number of panicles per hill is 9 – 10 while an average yield is 357...

The non-glutinous rainfed rice promising line IR77954-28-36-3 was first cross at the International Rice Research Institute in 1998. Selected and back cross at Ubon Ratchathani Rice Research Center between 1999-2004. Evaluated yield potential and environmental adaptation in the Upper North between 2005-2012. Average grain yield was 12-22% higher than KDML105 in research centers, flowering date between 12-22 October, 117-162 centimeter height, good perform in farmer fields, resistance to blast disease in seedling stage. Good response to nitrogen fertilizer, physical chemical and cooking quality like KDML105. Adopted by farmers and consumers in the activity of preference analysis by farmer participatory rice varieties selection.

Blast and bacterial leaf blight diseases are major diseases, which cause severe losses to yield and quality of rice in north eastern region. An evaluation of reaction of rice cultivars/lines to blast and bacterial leaf blight is one of the activities under the program of germplasm improvement in north eastern region with the objective of selecting for the rice lines resistant to leaf and neck blast and to bacterial leaf blight. The experiments were carried out in 2013 at Sakon Nakorn Rice Research Centre using 99 rainfed lowland rice lines and 35 irrigated rice lines. An evaluation of leaf blast at seedling stage was conducted under the upland, short-row conditions. An evaluation of neck blast was conducted at flowering stage by spraying a spore suspension...

Measurement of methane emission from rice production systems is a methodology for data collection of Carbon Footprint from rice production system. Four major rice production systems were defined for methane emission measurement in 2012, including upland rice, rainfed rice, irrigated rice with good agricultural practices (GAP) and irrigated rice with alternative wet and dry (AWD). Gas samples were taken one week interval and analyzed by Gas Chromatograph; GC-8A as soon as possible after collection. The research found that upland rice could absorb CH4 at the rate of 0.176 kg methane rai-1 season-1. Rainfed rice production system in Northeast Thailand emitted CH4 at the rate of 85.26 kg rai-1 season-1 under transplanting and 51.64 kg rai-1 season-1 under...
