Noninvasive method for electrocardiogram recording in conscious rats: feasibility for heart rate variability analysis Anais da ABC (AABC)
Pereira-Junior,Pedro P.; Marocolo,Moacir; Rodrigues,Fabricio P.; Medei,Emiliano; Nascimento,José H.M..
Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis consists in a well-established tool for the assessment of cardiac autonomic control, both in humans and in animal models. Conventional methods for HRV analysis in rats rely on conscious state electrocardiogram (ECG) recording based on prior invasive surgical procedures for electrodes/transmitters implants. The aim of the present study was to test a noninvasive and inexpensive method for ECG recording in conscious rats, assessing its feasibility for HRV analysis. A custom-made elastic cotton jacket was developed to fit the rat's mean thoracic circumference, with two pieces of platinum electrodes attached on its inner surface, allowing ECG to be recorded noninvasively in conscious, restrained rats (n=6). Time- and...

Effects of Aliskiren, an RAAS inhibitor, on a carrageenan-induced pleurisy model of rats Anais da ABC (AABC)
BAYIR,YASIN; UN,HARUN; CADIRCI,ELIF; AKPINAR,EROL; DIYARBAKIR,BUSRA; CALIK,ILKNUR; HALICI,ZEKAI.
Abstract Our aim is to investigate the potentially preventive effects of Aliskiren in a carrageenan-induced lung pleurisy model and to compare the standard anti-inflammatory agents, indomethacin and dexamethasone. The pleurisy model was induced through the injection of carrageenan (0.2 ml-%2) into the pleural cavity. After the experiment, serum and lung tissues were collected and biochemical, molecular and pathological examinations were performed. In our study, pleural inflammation decreased superoxide dismutase activity and the glutathione level and increased the malondialdehyde level in the lung of rats, while Aliskiren increased the superoxide dismutase activity and glutathione level and decreased the malondialdehyde level. In addition,...

The pilocarpine model of epilepsy: what have we learned? Anais da ABC (AABC)
Scorza,Fulvio A.; Arida,Ricardo M.; Naffah-Mazzacoratti,Maria da Graça; Scerni,Débora A.; Calderazzo,Lineu; Cavalheiro,Esper A..
The systemic administration of a potent muscarinic agonist pilocarpine in rats promotes sequential behavioral and electrographic changes that can be divided into 3 distinct periods: (a) an acute period that built up progressively into a limbic status epilepticus and that lasts 24 h, (b) a silent period with a progressive normalization of EEG and behavior which varies from 4 to 44 days, and (c) a chronic period with spontaneous recurrent seizures (SRSs). The main features of the SRSs observed during the long-term period resemble those of human complex partial seizures and recurs 2-3 times per week per animal. Therefore, the pilocarpine model of epilepsy is a valuable tool not only to study the pathogenesis of temporal lobe epilepsy in human condition, but...

Histomorphometric and functional studies of the rat thyroid throughout the estrous cycle Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Serakides,R.; Nunes,V.A; Nascimento,E.F.; Serra,G.V..
The influence of the estrous cycle on the thyroid gland was studied. Twenty one five-to-seven-month-old Wistar female rats were divided according to the stage of the estrous cycle in two groups: metaestrus-diestrus and proestrus-estrus. After gross inspection, the thyroids were weighed, sampled, and processed for staining with hematoxilyn-eosin. Seric concentrations of total T4, free T4, total T3, TSH, progesterone, and estradiol were measured. The values of estradiol were significantly higher in the proestrus-estrus stage. However, no significant differences in the plasmatic concentrations of progesterone, free T4, total T4 and TSH throughout the cycle were found. The results of the morphometric study of the thyroid did not indicate any significant...

Effects of the food contaminant semicarbazide on testicular morphology of juvenile Wistar rats Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Ramos,A; Pereira,A.; Cabrita,A.S; Silva,F. Capela e.

Effect of dithiocarbamate thiram on Wistar rat growth plate and articular cartilage Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Fialho,L.; Rafael,A.; Cabrita,A.S.; Pereira,A.M.F.; Capela e Silva,F..

Behavior of mesenchymal stem cells stained with 4&', 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole dihydrochloride (DAPI) in osteogenic and non osteogenic cultures Biocell
Ocarino,N.M.; Bozzi,A.; Pereira,R.D.O.; Breyner,N.M.; Silva,V.L.; Castanheira,P.; Goes,A.M.; Serakides,R..
4&', 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole dihydrochloride (DAPI) is a DNA dye widely used to mark and trace stem cells in therapy. We here studied the effect of DAPI staining on the behavior of mesenchymal stem cells cultured in either a control, non-osteogenic medium or in an osteogenic differentiation medium. In the control medium, the number of stem cells/field, as well as the number of fluorescent cells/field increased up to the sixth day in both control and DAPI-treated cultures. Afterwards, both the number of fluorescent cells and their fluorescence intensity decreased. Control cells were fusiform and with some long extensions that apparently linked them to neighboring cells, while DAPI-treated cells were mostly round cells with fine and short extensions....

A neutral cue facilitates detection of a visual target by modulating attention Biol. Res.
HAMAME,CARLOS M; DELANO,PAÚL H; ROBLES,LUIS.
Twelve rats were trained to perform a two-choice visual detection task in which a right or left light was presented and the animáis were required to press the lever located under the illuminated light for a food reward. In seventy percent of the triáis the target light was preceded by presentation of a neutral cue (a central light). Relevance of the neutral cue for detection of the target was analyzed by comparing behavioral Índices of attention in its presence and absence. Accuracy was significantly higher in presence than in absence of the neutral cue, while mean response latencies were lower in presence than in absence of the neutral cue. These results indicate that the animáis allocated attentional resources on the target detection during a high...

Proteomic Investigation of Changes in Rat Skeletal Muscle after Exercise-Induced Fatigue Biol. Res.
Zhao,Liping; Yan,Wenhui; Xiang,Heng; Wang,Xiaoyang; Qiao,Haixuan.
The mechanisms of exercise-induced fatigue have not been investigated using proteomic techniques, an approach that could improve our understanding and generate novel information regarding the effects of exercise. In this study, the proteom alterations of rat skeletal muscle were investigated during exercise-induced fatigue. The proteins were extracted from the skeletal muscle of SD rat thigh, and then analyzed by two-dimensional electrophoresis and PDQuest software. Compared to control samples, 10 significantly altered proteins were found in exercise samples, two of them were upregulated and eight of them were downregulated. These proteins were identified by MALDI TOF-MS. The two upregulated proteins were identified as MLC1 and myosin L2 (DTNB) regulatory...

The anteromedial extrastriate complex is critical for the use of allocentric visual cues and in the retention of the Lashley III maze task in rats Biol. Res.
ESPINOZA-CIFUENTES,SERGIO; LEANDER ZEISE,MARC.
The anteromedial extrastriate complex has been proposed to play an essential role in a spatial orientation system in rats. To gain more information about that possible role, in the present work, two questions were addressed: 1. Are allocentric visual cues relevant for acquisition of the orientation task in the Lashley III maze? 2. Is this integration of allocentric inputs in the anteromedial visual complex relevant in the retention of this test? While a control group of rats was trained keeping the maze in the same position, the experimental group was trained with the maze rotated counterclockwise by 144 degrees from session to session. Control rats reached learning criterion significantly earlier and with less errors than the experimental ones (p<.05)....

Genital Sensory Stimulation Shifts Estradiol Intraoviductal Signaling from Nongenomic to Genomic Pathways, Independently from Prolactin Surges Biol. Res.
PEÑARROJA-MATUTAN0,C; PARADA-BUSTAMANTE,A; ORIHUELA,P A; RÍOS,M; VELASQUEZ,LUIS A; CROXATTO,H B.
Estradiol (E2) accelerates oviductal egg transport through nongenomic pathways involving oviductal protein phosphorylation in non-mated rats, and through genomic pathways in mated rats. Here we investigated the ability of cervico-vaginal stimulation (CVS) to switch the mode of action of E2 in the absence of other male-associated components. Pro-estrous rats were subjected to CVS with a glass rod and 12 hours later were injected subcutaneously with E2 and intrabursally with the RNA synthesis inhibitor Actinomycin D or the protein phosphorylation inhibitor H-89. The number of eggs in the oviduct, assessed 24 h later, showed that Actinomycin D, but not H-89 blocked the E2-induced egg transport acceleration. This clearly indicates that CVS alone, without other...
