Rediscovering Rites of Passage: Education, Transformation, and the Transition to Sustainability Ecology and Society
Lertzman, David Adam; University of Calgary; lertzman@ucalgary.ca.
This paper focuses on rites of passage as a model for wilderness programs. It draws on my experience in the field, particularly with Native youth in a community-based program called "Rediscovery." The Rediscovery program is discussed, along with concepts of traditional indigenous knowledge and education. Foundational concepts of rites of passage are described in terms of their relevance to youth, outdoor education, and the Rediscovery program in particular. Using Rediscovery as a model, rites of passage are put forward as an educational process for youth from various cultural backgrounds. In this context, the purpose of education is to cultivate self-knowledge and to foster core personal development: the making of whole human beings. The paper closes with...

REDISCOVERY OF ECHINISCUS RUFOVIRIDIS DU BOIS-RAYMOND MARCUS 1944 (HETEROTARDIGRADA, ECHINISCIDAE): NEW CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF ITS MORPHOLOGY, BIOECOLOGY AND DISTRIBUTION Gayana
Peluffo,Julio; Moly de Peluffo,María C.; Rocha,Alejandra M..
Numerous specimens of Echiniscus rufoviridis (Heterotardigrada, Echiniscidae) were recorded and studied from urban localities in Argentina. Since the first description of this species by Du Bois-Raymond Marcus in 1944 on Brazilian specimens, it had not been recorded again. The validity of the species is confirmed, its geographic distribution is extended to Argentine localities and new data are provided on its morphology (optical and SEM) and its bioecology. Echiniscus rufoviridis can be clearly separated from the E. viridis, the closest species within the "viridis group", by the possession of depressions with pores on the surface of the cuticle, instead of papillae. On the other hand, an ecological similarity with...

Comments on the type specimen of Dracaena guianensis Daudin, 1801 (Reptilia: Sauria: Teiidae), and rediscovery of the species in French Guiana Naturalis
Massary, J.-C. de; Hoogmoed, M.S.; Blanc, M..
A discussion on the whereabouts of the holotype of Dracaena guianensis is given, and its rediscovery in the National Museum of Natural History, Leiden, The Netherlands (RMNH) and the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Anatomie Comparée, Paris, France (MNHN-AC) is reported. The RMNH possesses a stuffed specimen, of which the left forelimb has been amputated in life and of which the skull is no longer present in the specimen. The Paris museum possesses a skull that fits the Leiden specimen. Thus, the stuffed specimen and the skull together form the complete holotype, each object can be considered a “schizotype” of the holotype. After one of us observed the species again in French Guiana and documented this with a picture, the correction of the type...

Rediscovery of Holothuriophilus tomentosus (Ortmann) comb. nov. (Crustacea, Brachyura, Pinnotheridae) in the Brazilian coast Zoologia
Melo,Gustavo Augusto S. de; Boehs,Guisla.
Two males and one female of Holothuriophilus tomentosus (Ortmann, 1894) comb. nov. were collected in Enseada de Ratones, Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. Since its original description, as Pinnaxodes tomentosus, this species has only been collected recently, from the Pontal do Daniela, also in Florianópolis. The previously unknown male is described and the female is redescribed herein. The characteristics of this material lead us to believe that Pinnaxodes tomentosus should be transferred to the genus Holothuriophilus Nauk, 1880.
