Water use and onion crop production in no-tillage and conventional cropping systems Horticultura Brasileira
Marouelli,Waldir Aparecido; Abdalla,Rômulo P; Madeira,Nuno R; Silva,Henoque R da; Oliveira,Aureo S de.
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of crop residue covers (0.0; 4.5; 9.0; 13.5 t ha-1 millet dry matter) on water use and production of onion cultivated in no-tillage planting system (NT) as compared to conventional tillage system (CT). The study was carried out at Embrapa Hortaliças, Brazil, under the typical Savanna biome. Irrigations were performed using a sprinkle irrigation system when soil-water tension reached between 25 and 30 kPa. The experimental design was randomized blocks with three replications. Total net water depth applied to NT treatment was 19% smaller than the CT treatment, however, water savings increased to 30% for the first 30 days following seedlings transplant. Crop biomass, bulb size and yield, and rate...

An Economic Risk Analysis of Stocker Grazing on Conservation Tillage Small Grains Forage in Arkansas AgEcon
Watkins, K. Bradley; Hignight, Jeffrey A.; Beck, Paul A.; Anders, Merle M.; Hubbell, Donald S., III; Gadberry, Shane.
This study evaluates both the profitability and risk efficiency of grazing stocker steers on conservation tillage winter wheat pasture using simulation and stochastic efficiency with respect to a function (SERF). Average daily gains are simulated for steers grazed on conventional tillage (CT), reduced tillage (RT) and no-till (NT) winter wheat pasture. Steer price distributions and prices for key production inputs such as diesel, fertilizer, and glyphosate are also simulated. Stocker steer net return distributions by tillage treatment are constructed and ranked for risk efficiency using SERF. The results indicate the NT system is the most profitable and most risk efficient of the three tillage systems, followed by the RT system. Both conservation tillage...

BIOMASS FROM CROP RESIDUES: COST AND SUPPLY ESTIMATES AgEcon
Gallagher, Paul W.; Dikeman, Mark; Fritz, John; Wailes, Eric J.; Gauthier, Wayne M.; Shapouri, Hosein.
The supply of harvested crop residues as a feed stock for energy products is estimated in this report. The estimates account for economic and environmental factors governing residue supply. The supply results span major agricultural crops in four distinct cropping regions of the United States, taking into account local variation in cost-determining factors such as residue yield, geographic density of residues, and competition for livestock feed use.

Conservation Tillage Assessment for Wheat cropping in the Central Iran: Energetic, economics and environmental aspects (Case Study: Isfahan Province) CIGR Journal
Aliasgarian, Saeed.
Conservation tillage due to some properties such as reduction in time and energy required for seedbed preparation is going to be an unavoidable choice in region with arid and semiarid climate. This research was conducted at Murchehkhort farms, central region of Iran to energetic, economics and environmental evaluation of different tillage systems. The study was planned as a completely randomized block design with three tillage treatments replicated three times. The tillage treatments were: no-tillage (NT): direct drilling, reduced tillage (RT): chisel plow and roller packing as a combined machine followed by a light disking and drilling; and Conventional tillage (CT): moldboard plow followed by two heavy harrow diskings and drilling. NT Compared to CT and...
