Histology of folicular development of hybrids between Triatoma infestans Klug, 1864 and Triatoma platensis Neiva, 1913 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) Acta biol.Colomb.
Gastón FIAD,Federico; CAREZZANO,Fernando José; CARDOZO,Miriam; RODRÍGUEZ,Claudia Susana.
ABSTRACT Triatoma infestans and Triatoma platensis are interfertile species that frequently share ecotopes and produce natural fertile hybrids. Interspecific crossing allows the production of more suitable hybrid genotypes capable of colonizing new habitats. Therefore, studies of reproductive aspects in hybrids are of great importance. In this sense, oogenesis, a process that involves the development of the oocyte and allows the formation of viable eggs, is a relevant aspect. In this study, histological aspects focused on the follicular development of experimental hybrids were characterized. To do this, the ovaries of35 hybrid females were removed, paraffin-embedded and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. The development of the follicular epithelium and the...

VASCULAR EPIPHYTES: THE UGLY DUCKLING OF PHENOLOGICAL STUDIES Acta biol.Colomb.
RAMÍREZ-MARTÍNEZ,Adriana; MONDRAGÓN,Demetria; RIVERA-GARCÍA,Raúl.
ABSTRACT The phenology of vascular epiphytes, which account for about 10 % of the world's flowering plants and perform important ecological functions, has been just partially explored. Since phenology is a key tool for the management and conservation of species, the objective of this review was to synthesize the information published so far about the phenology of vascular epiphytes, detect gaps of knowledge, and suggest future lines of investigation to understand the underlying mechanisms. We conducted an online search for articles in Google Scholar and in the ISI Web of Science database from 1800 to 2020, with different combinations of keywords. 107 studies addressing the phenology of different holoepiphyte species were found; 88 % of the studies were...

Towards a unified terminology for angiosperm reproductive systems Acta Botanica
Cardoso,João Custódio Fernandes; Viana,Matheus Lacerda; Matias,Raphael; Furtado,Marco Túlio; Caetano,Ana Paula de Souza; Consolaro,Hélder; Brito,Vinícius Lourenço Garcia de.
ABSTRACT Angiosperms display an enormous diversity of forms, functions and strategies when it comes to reproduction. This multiplicity has been translated into several terminological concepts and contexts, which have facilitated further research. On the other hand, the use of terms that address the reproduction of flowering plants has been shown to be inconsistent in the literature, complicating communication among specialists. Key terms, such as “reproductive system”, “mating system” and “sexual system”, among others, have been frequently cited as synonyms, and even used in different circumstances. This review proposes to establish a consistent nomenclatural classification in the field of angiosperms reproductive biology in order to facilitate...

The reproductive biology of the early-divergent genus Anaxagorea (Annonaceae), and its significance for the evolutionary development of the family Acta Botanica
Gottsberger,Gerhard.
ABSTRACT Data of six studied Neotropical Anaxagorea species are analyzed and discussed with respect to the population structure, flowering phenology, flower morphology, anthesis, scent emission, thermogenesis, floral visitors, breeding system, fruit-set and seed dispersal. The probably reason for the patchy distribution of small populations of Anaxagorea species within lowland tropical forests is given. A novel explanation of the functional significance of ruminate endosperm is presented. Flowering of the species follows either the annual or the continuous flowering pattern. All studied species have diurnal, two-day lasting, protogynous anthesis; several species have thermogenic flowers. Self-compatibility appears to be the prevailing reproductive system...

Occurrence of the Indo-Pacific freshwater prawn Macrobrachium equidens Dana 1852 (Decapoda, Palaemonidae) on the coast of Brazilian Amazonia, with notes on its reproductive biology Anais da ABC (AABC)
Maciel,Cristiana R; Quadros,Manoel L; Abrunhosa,Fernando; Bastos,Sandra; Schneider,Horacio; Sampaio,Iracilda.
The freshwater prawn Macrobrachium equidens, which is native species of the Indo-Pacific Region, was recorded for the first time on the Amazon coast of Brazil. This species was found to inhabit the same environment as two native Macrobrachium species, M. amazonicum and M. acanthurus, and is morphologically very similar to the latter. The identification of the species was confirmed by the genetic analysis of sequences of the mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase (COI) gene. A detailed description of the morphological features and reproductive biology of M. equidens in this new environment is presented.

Reproductive activity and vocalizations of Leptodactylus labyrinthicus (Anura: Leptodactylidae) in southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Zina,Juliana; Haddad,Célio F. B..
Vocalizations and reproductive activity of two Leptodactylus labyrinthicus populations were studied from Jun/2001 to Feb/2003 in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Observations began at dusk and ended around 2300 h. Occasionally individuals were monitored throughout the night. Data on reproductive period, calling sites, adult snout-vent length (SVL), oviposition sites, and oviposition period was collected. Leptodactylus labyrinthicus had an extended breeding period associated mainly with rainfall. Males called from the edge of temporary or permanent ponds, began vocalization activity at dusk, and finished around 2300 or 2400h. During the peak of the vocalization period (Dec- Jan), calling activity could extend up to 0400 or 0500h. Three types of vocalizations...

Reproductive biology of a tetragonopterinae (osteichthyes, characidae) of the Ubatiba fluvial system, Maricá - RJ BABT
Mazzoni,Rosana; Petito,Jaqueline.
Aspects of the reproductive biology of one Tetragonopterinae was assessed in the Ubatiba river - Maricá / RJ. Length structure and mean size suggested sexual dimorphism, females reaching larger sizes than males. The onset of sexual maturity occured at 2.8cm for both the sexes. Fecundity, determined on ripe ovaries, showed positive correlation to females size and weight and varied from 595 to 5520 for 3.9cm and 6.2cm lengths respectively. The spawning type, defined as total, was determined by the oocyte diameter frequency from ovaries in different development stages. The frequency distribution of ovarian/testis maturation stages, associated with the temporal variation of the gonadosomatic index, suggested that the reproduction period was prolonged along the...

Effect of ivermectin on the life cycle and larval fat body of Culex quinquefasciatus BABT
Alves,Stenio Nunes; Serrão,José Eduardo; Mocelin,Giovani; Melo,Alan Lane de.
The present work investigated the behavior, survival rate and lethal effect of 1.5 ppb ivermectin on Culex quinquefasciatus larvae, based on morphological and biological parameters, and possible alterations of their fat body. Changes in the number of eggs/egg mass and length of the larval stage were investigated. For this experiment, 600 larvae of 3rd and 4th instars of the mosquito were tested. The laid eggs were separated and the hatched larvae were counted. Some larvae submitted to 1.5 ppb ivermectin solution were used to prepare samples for histological study. Results obtained showed that ivermectin in a concentration of 1.5 ppb caused paralysis to the larvae with a mortality rate of 73.38%, mobilization of substances stored in the fat body and...

Reproductive behavior and seasonal occurrence of Psecas viridipurpureus (Salticidae, Araneae) BJB
ROSSA-FERES,D. de C.; ROMERO,G. Q.; GONÇALVES-DE- FREITAS,E.; FERES,R. J. F..
The reproductive behavior and the seasonal occurrence of Psecas viridipurpureus were studied at the Estação Ecológica do Noroeste Paulista, a small conservation area in the northwest region of São Paulo State, Brazil (49°22'50''W and 20°48'36''S). P. viridipurpureus occurred on "gravatá", a bromeliaceous plant (Bromelia balansae, Bromeliaceae) which does not accumulate rain water. During the courtship display the couple occupied the median region of the "gravatá" leaves, with the male always located in a higher position than the female. The males of P. viridipurpureus showed a complex courtship behavior, which included five motor patterns. The courtship and mating behavior occurred preponderantly during the rainy season and the juvenile recruitment between...

REPRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF Dromiciops gliroides (MARSUPIALIA: MICROBIOTHERIIDAE) IN TEMPERATE RAINFORESTS OF SOUTHERN CHILE Gayana
Muñoz-Pedreros,Andrés; Lang,Brian K; Bretos,Marta; Meserve,Peter L.
The reproductive biology of Dromiciops gliroides is described from five females collected during spring (October, December 1984) in southern continental Chile. Developmental morphology of intra-uterine embryos (October litters) was examined by microscopic analysis and compared with morphological attributes of 8 pouched young (December litters). Intra-uterine embryos demonstrate ontogenetic features characteristic of altricial neonates, which migrate from the urogenital opening to the marsupium in order to complete the later stages of development. D. gliroides apparently is a monoestrus, seasonal breeder producing one litter per year. Maximum recorded litter size is four, with birth occurring in early spring (October). The life cycle of D. gliroides is...

Bromeliaceae is a morphologically distinctive and ecologically diverse family originating in the New World. Three centers of diversity, 58 genera, and about 3,140 bromeliad species are currently recognized. We compiled all of the studies related to the reproductive biology, genetic diversity, and population structure of the Bromeliaceae, and discuss the evolution and conservation of this family. Bromeliads are preferentially pollinated by vertebrates and show marked variation in breeding systems, from predominant inbreeding to predominant outcrossing, as well as constancy in chromosome number (2n = 2x = 50). Autogamous or mixed mating system bromeliads have a high inbreeding coefficient (F IS), while outcrossing species show low F IS. The degree of...

Temperature-sex determination in Podocnemis expansa (Testudines, Podocnemididae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Bonach,Kelly; Malvasio,Adriana; Matushima,Eliana R.; Verdade,Luciano M..
This study has been carried out at the central region of the Araguaia river on the border between the states of Goiás and Mato Grosso in the Brazilian Amazon Basin from September to December 2000. We recorded temperature fluctuation, clutch-size, incubation period and hatching success rate and hatchlings' sex ratio of five nests of Podocnemis expansa (Schweigger, 1812). Despite the relatively small sample size we infer that: a) nests of P. expansa in the central Araguaia river have a lower incubation temperature than nests located further south; however, incubation period is shorter, hatching success rate is lower and clutch-size is larger; b) Podocnemis expansa may present a female-male-female (FMF) pattern of temperature sex-determination (TSD); c)...

ABSTRACT Macrobrachium amazonicum (Heller, 1862) is the most important species for aquaculture native to South America. This study evaluates the phenotypic plasticity of females of Macrobrachium amazonicum with respect to the gonadal development, and determines the spawning type. Our study consisted of macro and microscopic analysis of the reproductive tract. Ovaries exhibited the following reproductive cells in developmental sequence: oogonia (OO) - mean diameter and standard deviation of 25.4 ± 6.5 μm; previtellogenic oocyte (PVO) - 61.7 ± 10.7 μm, vitellogenic oocyte (VO) - 113.9 ± 24.5 μm; and mature oocyte (MO) - 308.7 ± 56.3 μm. Ovaries increased in volume due to vitellogenesis and changing of basophilic to acidophilic composition. Follicular cells,...
