Review of the reproductive physiology of the scallop, Pecten maximus, applicable to intensive aquaculture ArchiMer
Devauchelle, Nicole; Mingant, Christian.
This paper presents a summary of information on reproduction biology in the scallop, Pecten maximus, which is required for the successful reseeding and intensive aquaculture programs developed in France since 1982. Data are presented on the following subjects: environmental factors that sustain gametogenic activity and the time of year this activity occurs; biochemical changes that are associated with gametogenesis; the consistency of egg quality; and development of a simple test to predict egg quality.

This research evaluates the effect of the adult diet on the reproduction of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner, Heliothis virescens (Fabr.), Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Noctuidae), Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr.) (Crambidae), Gymnandrosoma aurantianum Lima (Tortricidae) and Stenoma catenifer Walsingham (Elachistidae). Adults of all species were fed either water or a 10% honey solution. The egg viability for the 1st and 2nd egg masses, adult fecundity, longevity, number of mating and the ovigeny index (OI) (degree of ovarian maturation) were evaluated. Fecundity of A. gemmatalis and H. virescens was drastically reduced when females were fed only on water. Egg viability from both 1st and 2nd egg masses was variable between treatments. Females of A....

Testicular echotexture and seminal quality of young Montana Tropical Compound bulls classified as sound and unsound for breeding R. Bras. Zootec.
Pinho,Rogério Oliveira; Costa,Deiler Sampaio; Siqueira,Jeanne Broch; Chaya,Alberto Yukio; Neto,Tamires Miranda; Martins,Leonardo Franco; Guimarães,Simone Eliza Facioni; Guimarães,José Domingos.
The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between testicular echotexture and seminal quality, in addition to evaluate the testicular parenchyma echogenicity pattern in young Montana bulls classified as sound and unsound for breeding. Fifty-two young Montana Tropical Compound bulls from 22 to 33 months of age were used. The animals were previously evaluated by breeding soundness evaluation and thereafter divided into two groups of breeding soundness classes: 1 = 16 animals sound for breeding; 2 = 36 animals unsound for breeding by means of physical and morphological analysis of semen. All animals underwent an ultrasound examination of the testes, and the images were analyzed with the software "Image J". ANOVA was used for statistical...
