Continuous gluconic acid production by Aureobasidium pullulans with and without biomass retention Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Anastassiadis,Savas; Rehm,Hans-Jürgen.
New alternative processes for the continuous production of gluconic acid by Aureobasidium pullulans, using biomass retention by cell immobilization or cross over filtration, are described in the present work. 315 g/l gluconic acid was continuously produced in chemostat cultures at 21 hrs residence time without any biomass retention. 260 g/l gluconic acid was produced in fluidized bed reactor at 21 hrs residence time. The support carrier was overgrown resulting in limitations of oxygen transfer towards the inner layers of immobilized biomass. 375 g/l gluconic acid was produced under continuous cultivation at 22 hrs of residence time with a formation rate for the generic product of 17 g/(l x h) and a specific gluconic acid productivity of only 0.74 g/(g x...

Intra-individual behavioral variability displayed by tuna at fish aggregating devices (FADs) ArchiMer
Robert, Marianne; Dagorn, Laurent; Filmalter, John David; Deneubourg, Jean-louis; Itano, David; Holland, Kim.
Fishers have exploited the associative behavior displayed by several pelagic fish species with floating objects for decades, through the use of man-made fish aggregating devices (FADs), which facilitate the capture of such species. However, our understanding of this associative behavior and its adaptive value is poor and the scientific community is ill-equipped to provide fishery managers with science-based recommendations on the impacts of FADs on ecosystems. In an array of 13 anchored FADs around Oahu, Hawaii, USA, 72 yellowfin tuna Thunnus albacares were equipped with internal acoustic tags, which facilitated the continuous monitored of their presence and absence around each FAD using automated acoustic receivers. Data were analyzed using survival...

The Douro estuary (Portugal): a mesotidal salt wedge ArchiMer
Vieira, Mario Ec; Bordalo, Adriano A.
The Douro River drains a large part of the Iberian Peninsula before it flows into the Atlantic Ocean in northern Portugal. Although heavily dammed throughout its course, the Douro forms a mesotidal estuary in the last 22 km. Na data had ever been collected in this estuary prior to 1994. An analysis of salinity data measured once a month in 1994 and current data obtained in the fall of 1994 revealed a salt wedge estuary highly dependent on river discharge: strong vertical salinity stratification under conditions of low runoff, whereas during high river flows the whole estuary became a river. The tide in the fall of 1994 was very close to a standing wave throughout the estuary; the tidal range, as high as 2.8 m at spring tides, was not powerful enough to...

L'utilisation de modèles écologiques dans la lutte contre l'eutrophisation des eaux côtières françaises ArchiMer
Menesguen, Alain.
Increasing anthropogenic nitrogen and phosphorus loadings in some coastal areas have induced during the last twenty years excessive production of algal material, either phytoplanktonic or macrophytic. This so-called eutrophication phenomenon alters the usual structure of ecosystem and can lead to massive kills caused by anoxia in some extreme cases, when almost all the dissolved oxygen in bottom waters has been consumed by organic matter decomposition. Just behind the semi-enclosed lagoons, the most sensible areas are the dilution plumes of main rivers. In the case of French coasts, mediterranean lagoons have been eutrophicated for a long time, whereas the coastal areas of the Bay of Biscay and English Channel have been partially preserved by the strong...

A probabilistic approach of flow-balanced network based on Markov chains ArchiMer
Leguerrier, Delphine; Bacher, Cedric; Benoit, Eric; Niquil, Nathalie.
We used Markov chains to assess residence time, first passage time, rare of transfers between compartments, recycling index with a general mathematical formalism. Such a description applies to any flow-balanced system that can be modelled as a series of discrete stages or compartments through which matter flows. We derived a general set of equations from a probabilistic approach and applied them to a food web and a physical system derived from the literature. We therefore analysed preferential pathways of matter and behaviour of these systems and showed how it was possible to build up and exploit indices on the basis of a transition probability matrix describing the network, and to characterize with a generic algorithm: (1) the total indirect relationships...

The Kuroshio intermediate water is the major source of nutrients on the East China Sea continental shelf ArchiMer
Chen, Cta.
The Kuroshio subsurface waters upwell onto the East China Sea (ECS) shelf and contribute a large amount of nutrients to the ECS. This contribution is many times more than the inputs from the Yangtze and the Yellow Rivers. The residence time of the ECS shelf water is estimated at 1.3 +/- 0.4 years. The new production rate of phytoplankton is 73 +/- 22 mg C/m(2)/day and the net burial rate of organic carbon is 41 +/- 23 mg C/m(2)/day.

Near-Surface Transport Properties and Lagrangian Statistics during Two Contrasting Years in the Adriatic Sea ArchiMer
Hariri, Saeed.
This paper describes the near-surface transport properties and Lagrangian statistics in the Adriatic semi-enclosed basin using synthetic drifters. Lagrangian transport models were used to simulate synthetic trajectories from the mean flow fields obtained by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology general circulation model (MITgcm), implemented in the Adriatic from October 2006 until December 2008. In particular, the surface circulation properties in two contrasting years (2007 had a mild winter and cold fall, while 2008 had a normal winter and hot summer) are compared here. In addition, the Lagrangian statistics for the entire Adriatic Basin after removing the Eulerian mean circulation for numerical particles were calculated. The results indicate that...

Les problèmes d'eutrophisation littorale et leur modélisation ArchiMer
Menesguen, Alain.
Following lakes and rivers, a lot of estuaries (during the last twenty years) and shallow coastal zones (during the last decade) have been severely eutrophicated because of the too much increasing loads of nitrogen and phsophorus. In situ stutdy and numerical modelling of two french case studies bring some explanation to the facts that, in some sites, enrichment turns into green macroalgal proliferation whereas, in others, mass blooms of phytoplankton are induced. Whatever the case may be, the prominent role of the residence time of water in the enriched zone has been proven. In open coastal ecosystems, the difficulty in determining this residence time as well as the limiting factor (nitrogen, or phosphorus, or light) lowers considerably the reliability of...

Association dynamics of tuna and purse seine bycatch species with drifting fish aggregating devices (FADs) in the tropical eastern Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Tolotti, Mariana Travassos; Forget, Fabien; Capello, Manuela; Filmalter, John David; Hutchinson, Melanie; Itano, David; Holland, Kim; Dagorn, Laurent.
Several pelagic fish species are known to regularly associate with floating objects in the open ocean, including commercially valuable species. The tuna purse seine industry takes advantage of this associative behavior and has been increasingly deploying free-drifting man-made floating objects, also known as fish aggregating devices (FADs). Using passive acoustic telemetry, this study describes the associative dynamics of the main targeted tropical tuna species (Thunnus albacares, T. obesus and Katsuwonus pelamis), as well as three major bycatch species, silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis), rainbow runner (Elagatis bipinnulata) and oceanic triggerfish (Canthidermis maculata). Short-term excursions away from the FADs were frequently performed by all tuna...

Unusual Po-210/Pb-210 ratios in the surface water of the Gulf of Lions ArchiMer
Radakovitch, O; Cherry, Rd; Heyraud, M; Heussner, S.
Concentrations of Po-210 and Pb-210 have been measured in sea water collected in the Grand Rhone Canyon. Concentrations of Pb-210 are at similar levels to those found in other Mediterranean seawater samples, and are at the levels which would be expected in comparison with global sea water data. The same applies to the Po-210 concentrations in samples from below 100 m depth. Surface samples from above 100 m have Po-210 at levels rather higher than expected, and their Po-210/Pb-210 ratios are about 1 or more as compared with the usual open ocean ratio of about 0.5. These data can be interpreted as indicating another source of supply of Po-210 to the surface layer in addition to the normal atmospheric input. We suggest that an episodic advective particulate...
