Regional Fishery Management Organization as Games in Coalitional Form AgEcon
Do, Kim Hang Pham; Folmer, Henk.
This paper examines how a Regional Fisheries Management Organization (RFMO) might successfully achieve effective control of a high seas fishery in the context of partial cooperation. We analyse the feasible allocations of property rights among members of a given RFMO and coalitions of potential entrants. We demonstrate that the modified Shapley value is an appropriate device for the division of the gains from both partial and full cooperations.

STOCK UNCERTAINTY IN RENEWABLE RESOURCE THEORY: THE EXPLOITATION OF AQUIFERS OF UNKNOWN SIZE AgEcon
Tsur, Yacov.
The theory of stock uncertainty in the utilization of exhaustible resources is extended to renewable groundwater resources. A complete characterization of the exploitation process is presented, paying special attention to the formulation of the trasversality conditions. Exploration activities are incorporated and fit smoothly within the framework of analysis. Extensions to other renewable situations are outlined.

Forest Dependence, Forest Fringe Communities, and the Importance of Heterogeneous Nontimber Forest Products AgEcon
Schwabe, Kurt A.; Howell, Colleen; Abu Samah, Azizan Haji.
The value of forests to poor communities within or around the forest has been garnering increasingly more attention. A recent study partially commissioned by the World Bank reveals that in some 54 case studies evaluated, forest income averaged 22% of total income. The income generated from forest use by these communities serves many roles, including as a primary income source, a secondary income source, and as a safety net to alleviate production shocks to other income-generating activities. From a policy perspective, especially in terms of poverty alleviation and forest management, an understanding of the degree and manner by which poor forest communities depend and draw upon potentially scarce forest resources may be useful. Furthermore, identification...

New Institutional Economics, Governance and the Performance of Water Institutions in India AgEcon
Gandhi, Vasant P.; Crase, Lin.
There has been substantial water resources development for agriculture in India but the emphasis has been mainly on the technical side - the building of the necessary institutions required for effective management of the resource has received little attention. Many believe that water resource management in India is heading for a crisis unless the institutions and related policies are rapidly transformed. In this light, the study examines key features of water institutions in India, applying new institutional economics fundamentals, as well as management theories of good governance. The study uses a survey of 29 water institutions and 450 farm households conducted across three states in India which face water scarcity and have attempted to address it...

The "supply-of-storage" for natural gas in California AgEcon
Uria, Rocio; Williams, Jeffrey C..
Do natural gas storage decisions in California respond to futures price spreads? Daily data about flows into and out of storage facilities in California over 2001-2005 and daily price spreads are used to investigate whether the net injection profile is consistent with the "supply-of-storage" curve deduced by Working for wheat. Storage decisions in California do seem to be influenced by intertemporal signals on NYMEX, but the magnitude of the effect is small. Strong seasonal and weekly cycles determine the net injection profile to a considerable extent. Regulatory requirements and operational constraints also limit the size of the response to intertemporal arbitrage opportunities. Results are surprisingly sensitive to the level of aggregation considered.

Aproximacion a las perdidas economicas ocasionadas a corto plazo por los incendios forestales en Galicia en 2006 AgEcon
Barrio, Melina; Loureiro, Maria L.; Chas, Maria Luisa.
ABSTRACT This study quantifies part of the short-term or immediate economic losses (excluding the non-use or pasive losses) caused by the wildfires in Galicia during 2006. The background of the empirical work is...

Conservation Contracting in Heterogeneous Landscapes: An Application to Watershed Protection and Threshold Constraints AgEcon
Ferraro, Paul J..
A key issue in the design of land use policy is how to integrate information about spatially variable biophysical and economic conditions into a cost-effective conservation plan. Using common biophysical scoring methods, in combination with economic data and simple optimization methods, an illustration is provided for how to identify a set of priority land parcels for conservation investment. This study also demonstrates a way in which conservation agencies can incorporate concerns about biophysical thresholds in the identification of their priority land parcels. These methods are applied using Geographic Information System data from a New York conservation easement acquisition initiative for water quality protection.

ECONOMIC LINKAGES BETWEEN COASTAL WETLANDS AND HABITAT/SPECIES PROTECTION: A REVIEW OF VALUE ESTIMATES REPORTED IN THE PUBLISHED LITERATURE AgEcon
Kazmierczak, Richard F., Jr..
This manuscript summarizes a total of 8 peer-reviewed studies, published from 1975 to 2001, reporting 24 separate estimates for the disaggregate2 value of habitat and species protection services provided by coastal and non-coastal wetlands. Estimates varied within a single order of magnitude and were fairly tightly bounded. Considering only coastal zone wetlands across all study categories, the value of habitat and species protection ranged from $168.96/acre/year to $403.16/acre/year, with a mean and median of $249.44/acre/year and $253.47/acre/year, respectively. By comparison, reported estimates of willingness-to-pay (WTP) values for wetland habitat and species protection services ranged from a low of $30.12 to $434.67, with a mean and median of $211.59...

Productive Water Uses at Household Level in Rural Kenya: Case Study of the Ukambani District AgEcon
Speelman, Stijn; D'Haese, Luc; Ochieng, Cosmas M.O.; Vandermeulen, Valerie.
As a result of the growing world population and enhanced by the rising of living standards, competition for water is growing and this causes increased pressure on water resources worldwide. This tendency gave rise to the development of the integrated water resources management approach (IWRM), acknowledging the need to manage water resources in a holistic and integrated way. The IWRM objective to optimize economic, social and environmental outcomes of water management, can however only be reached if impact of water uses is correctly assessed. Nevertheless, often multiple uses of water within sectors are insufficiently recognized in planning and management. One of these neglected uses is the productive water use by households. Nonetheless, this use is...

The Contribution of Non-Timber Forest Products to Rural Household Income in Zambia AgEcon
Mulenga, Brian P.; Richardson, Robert B.; Mapemba, Lawrence D.; Tembo, Gelson.
Forest products play an important role in supporting rural livelihoods and food security in many developing countries. Pimentel et al. (1997) found that the integrity of forests is vital to world food security, mostly because of the dependence of the poor on forest resources. Studies of the role of forest products in household welfare in Zambia have found that such products are among the top sources of household income in some rural areas. This paper uses statistical analysis to examine the role of non-timber forest products NTFPs) in rural household welfare in Zambia, with two main objectives. First, using rural household survey data, we estimate the share of NTFP income to total household income with the aim of assessing the proportion and distribution...

NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT IN THE HILLSIDES OF HONDURAS: BIOECONOMIC MODELING AT THE MICRO-WATERSHED LEVEL AgEcon
Barbier, Bruno; Bergeron, Gilles.
The objective of this study is to simulate the effect of population pressure, market integration, technological improvement and policy decisions on natural resource management in the hillsides of Honduras. To do so, we developed a bioeconomic model that combines dynamic linear programming with a biophysical model, then applied this model to a typical microwatershed. Over recent years, farmers from the selected microwatershed have followed a "vegetables-intensive" pathway of development. We ran different scenarios with historical data over the period 1975 to 1995 and then projected 25 years into the future from 1995 to 2020. The results of the bioeconomic model presented in this paper help to test a number of induced innovation hypotheses. Many of our...
