DROUGHT LIMITS INDUCED TWINING BY LEAF DAMAGE IN THE CLIMBING PLANT IPOMOEA PURPUREA (L.) ROTH (CONVOLVULACEAE) Gayana Botánica
Atala,Cristian; Gianoli,Ernesto.
The environment may limit the expression of induced responses to herbivory, such as increased chemical or physical defenses. Recent studies in climbing plants have shown that leaf damage induces twining. This response may confer protection against ground herbivores in the field. We addressed the effect of drought on the induced twining of the annual vine Ipomoea purpurea (Convolvulaceae), which can experience drought stress in natural conditions. In a greenhouse experiment, we recorded twining rate (proportion of plants successfully climbing at a given time) of damaged and undamaged individuals of I. purpurea subjected to control watering and water shortage treatments. We also estimated stem growth rate and stem water content in experimental plants, just...

North Sea saithe Pollachius virens growth in relation to food availability, density dependence and temperature ArchiMer
Cormon, Xochitl; Ernande, Bruno; Kempf, Alexander; Vermard, Youen; Marchal, Paul.
North Sea saithe Pollachius virens, a major top predator in the area, supports the fishery economy of several European countries. However, recent stock assessments suggested a decrease in spawning stock biomass along with a decline in saithe mean weight-at-ages. In this context, we investigated North Sea saithe growth characteristics at the population level. First, saithe annual weight increments and age-length relationships were studied. Modelling of saithe age-length relationships was carried out using (1) the traditional von Bertalanffy growth function model, (2) the Verhulst logistic model and (3) an empirical linear model. Second, the effects of environmental factors on saithe growth were investigated. Explanatory environmental factors included food...

Heliconia acuminata reproductive success is independent of local floral density Acta Amazonica
Bruna,Emilio M.; Kress,W. John; Marques,Francisco; Silva,Osmaildo Ferreira da.
Reproductive plants in tropical forests are patchily distributed, with some in large aggregations of reproductive consepecifics while others are relatively isolated. This variation in floral density is hypothesized to have a major effect on plant reproductive success, since individuals in higher density neighborhoods can attract more or higher quality pollinators. We experimentally tested this hypothesis with populations of the understory herb Heliconia acuminata in central Amazonia. We created replicated plots in which reproductive plant density spanned the range of naturally occurring floral neighborhood size, then measured three surrogates of plant fitness in focal plants in each array. There was no significant difference between any of the three floral...
