Handing Over the Reins: A Comparative Study of Intergenerational Farm Transfers in England, France and Canada AgEcon

One of the most critical stages in the development of any family business is the transfer of its ownership and control to the next generation. However, the process by which this transfer is achieved in farming has been one of the least-researched facets of farm business management. This paper draws on an on-going research project which seeks to remedy this omission. Comparable data for a total of 3,500 farms in England, France and Canada has been analysed to provide a portrait of the main features of the process in which the older generation retires from the farm while the younger generation takes over its ownership and management. Many retiring farmers will need to use their land equity to provide a retirement income. Based on a present value analysis, retiring farmers may either decide to sell or lease their land. The analysis is needed because taxes, liability issues, and goals of the farmer complicate the decision.

NATURAL AMENITIES DRIVE RURAL POPULATION CHANGE AgEcon

Climate, topography, and water area are highly related to rural county population change over the past 25 years. A natural amenities index, derived and discussed here, captures much of this relationship. Average 1970-96 population change in nonmetropolitan counties was I percent among counties low on the natural amenities index and 120 percent among counties high on the index. Most retirement counties and recreation counties score in the top quarter of the amenities index. Employment change is also highly related to natural amenities, although more so over the past 25 years than in the current decade. The importance of particular amentities varies by region.
