Determinants of Wages and Returns to Education in Rural India AgEcon

This study focuses on estimating determinants of wages across primary, secondary and tertiary sectors in rural India by the type of work contract involved. Casual labourers, with short term work contracts and nearly absent benefits and wage employees, with long term work contracts, higher wages and benefits represent dual sections of the labour market. Here we demonstrate that human capital and other factors that has been proven to explain variation in wages in other labour markets, explain little about wages in casual employment sector. Further, pattern of returns to education for casual labourers were found to decrease with increasing educational levels and was negative for higher education. Farm Productivity and Efficiency in Rural Bangladesh: The Role of Education Revisited AgEcon

This paper reassesses the debate over the role of education in farm pro duction in Bangladesh using a large dataset on rice producing hous eholds from 141 villages. Average and stochastic production frontier functions are estimated to ascertain the effect of education on productivity and efficiency. A full set of proxies for farm education stock variables are incorporated to investigate the 'internal' as well as 'external' returns to education. The external effect is investigated in the context of rural neighborhoods. Our analysis reveals that in addition to raising rice productivity and boosting potential output, household education significantly reduces production inefficiencies. The Effect of Continuing Education Participation on Agricultural Worker Outcomes AgEcon

Migrant farmworkers are among the poorest members of the working class served by the U.S. public workforce investment system. The National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP) provides job training and employment assistance to migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their dependents. While stated goals include assisting migrant farmworkers increase “economic stability” by steadying agricultural employment and developing job skills, little empirical evidence exists as to the effectiveness of these programs.
