A new species of Astyanax (Characiformes: Characidae) from the rapids of the lower rio Xingu, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Lima,Flávio C.T.; Zuanon,Jansen.
Astyanax dnophos, new species, is described from the lower rio Xingu, Pará, Brazil. The new species is distinguished from its purported congeners by the presence of a broad longitudinal, midlateral dark stripe that extends from the snout to the caudal peduncle. Astyanax dnophos dwells on shadowed, rocky shelters on rapids, and it is apparently one of the few species of Characidae outside Serrasalminae reported to be rheophilic.

Tometes camunani (Characiformes: Serrasalmidae), a new species of phytophagous fish from the Guiana Shield, rio Trombetas basin, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Andrade,Marcelo C.; Giarrizzo,Tommaso; Jégu,Michel.
A new species of Serrasalmidae, Tometes camunani, is described from the upper drainages of the rio Trombetas basin, Pará State, Brazil. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by having neurocranium with a slight concavity at the level of the frontal bone (vs. concavity absent, dorsal profile of neurocranium straight). It can be further distinguished from its congeners by having teeth with central cusp taller and acute (vs. central cusp shorter and with rounded edge in T. trilobatus), a terminal mouth (vs. upturned mouth in T. lebaili), and 12-26 prepelvic spines (vs. 0-9 in T. makue). The new species is strictly rheophilic like other species of Tometes, and occurs exclusively in the rapids of shield rivers, complex and fragile biotopes that...

Kullander,Sven O; Ferreira,Efrem J. G..
Apistogramma angayuara is described from the rio Trombetas close to the cachoeira Vira Mundo where it is found in association with rapids. It is assigned to the A. pertensis species group, distinguished by the following characters in combination: three prominent stripes composed of dark spots along the sides of the abdomen, 2 vs. 3 postlachrymal infraorbital pores, 5 vs. 4 dentary pores, low dorsal fin in adult males, and presence of a caudal spot. It is the smallest species of Apistogramma reported so far, with the largest male 24.7 mm SL and the largest female 22.7 mm SL, and the first cichlid species found with a significant proportion of rhizopods in the stomach content. Apistogramma salpinction is described from lentic habitats at the margin of road...
