ABSTRACT Six wide-ranging mangrove species, Rhizophora apiculata, R. mucronata, Avicennia marina, A. officinalis, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, and B. sexangula, were selected to study the growth and survival of seedlings under three contrasting salinity treatments over a 30-week period: low (3-5psu), moderate (15-17psu) and high (33-36psu). Seedlings grown under high salinity exhibited significantly lower performance (p<0.05) in survival rates, cumulative shoot height, mean growth rates, mean total leaf area, and mean dry weight, compared to those under low and moderate salinity regimes. The low salinity treatment provided the best conditions for initial establishment and growth of the seedlings of all species until 15-20 weeks of age. However, the same... |

With the aim of increasing the knowledge about endophytic fungi, a group of microorganisms with high biotechnological potential and a valuable source of useful metabolites, a survey in leaves of mangrove plants (Avicennia schaueriana, Laguncularia racemosa, and Rhizophora mangle) was performed at the Itamaracá Island, PE, Brazil. Leaves were collected, during two seasons, dry and rainy, superficially sterilized and fragments maintained in Petri dishes with Potato dextrose agar (PDA) at 28º ± 2º C until isolation of the fungi. Fourty taxa were isolated: 25 species representing 19 genera and 15 morphotypes determined as Mycelia sterilia. Leaves of L. racemosa hosted the highest number of colony forming units (CFU) and taxa. Guignardia sp. and Colletotrichum... |

A recent survey of mangroves in New Caledonia located 7 taxa of the genus Rhizophora – with 6 coexisting in one estuary. This is arguably the greatest concentration of co-occurring Rhizophora taxa anywhere. Two are well-known mangrove species of the Indo West Pacific, R. stylosa and R. apiculata, and another, R. samoensis resembles the widespread Atlantic East Pacific species, R. mangle. The other four are hybrid intermediates, R. × lamarckii (= R. stylosa × R. apiculata), R. × selala (= R. stylosa × R. samoensis), and two previously undescribed combinations, R. × tomlinsonii (R. apiculata × R. samoensis) and R. samoensis var. neocaledonica (= R. samoensis × R. × selala). The new entities are unknown elsewhere. While R. × tomlinsonii is considered endemic... |

CHOW, Barbara A., 1997. Biological and management aspects of a Caribbean mangal: West Harbour, Jamaica. Studies Nat. Hist. Caribbean Region 73, Amsterdam, 1997: 1-22. Observations are given for the first time of West Harbour, a pristine south-coast Jamaican mangal. West Harbour is shown to be a diverse and extensive mangal (22.5 km²) with a high degree of representativeness with respect to mangrove community types. The classical mangrove zonation is evident, a fringing seaward almost mono-specific Rhizophora fronting backswamp basin Avicennia. Mangrove community types are varied; overwash, fringe, basin and scrub Rhizophora, and basin and scrub Avicennia. A broad scale survey recorded a total of 45 plant and 183 macrofaunal components of the biota which... |
