Intestinal barrier function and serum concentrations of rifampin, isoniazid and pyrazinamide in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis BJID
Façanha,Mônica C.; Gondim,Argina M.B.; Pinheiro,Valéria G.F.; Barroso,Elizabeth C.; Peloquin,Charles A.; Guerrant,Richard L.; Lima,Aldo A.M..
Intestinal barrier function and serum concentrations of rifampin, isoniazid and pyrazinamide were studied in healthy controls and patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis. A case-control study of 29 controls and 30 cases attending at the Health Center, July, 2004 to December, 2005 was conducted. The body mass index was significantly reduced in cases compared to controls (p < 0.001). The intestinal paracellular transport of lactulose was significantly (p = 0.019) reduced in cases compared to controls. The transcellular transport of mannitol and the lactulose:mannitol ratio were not significantly (p = 0.0698) reduced in cases compared to controls. Low serum concentrations of rifampin, isoniazid and pyrazinamide were observed in 81% (48/59), 92% (54/59)...

Efficacy and safety of Efavirenz in HIV patients on Rifampin for tuberculosis BJID
Pedral-Sampaio,Diana B.; Alves,Carmosina R.; Netto,Eduardo M.; Brites,Carlos; Oliveira,Adriano S.; Badaro,Roberto.
Forty-nine AIDS patients, most of who were antiretroviral therapy (ARV) naïve, with active tuberculosis, were treated with Rifampin 600mg, Isoniazid 400mg and Pirazinamide 2g daily. They also received ARV, consisting of Efavirenz (600mg/day) plus 2 NRTIs. All patients were prospectively followed for at least 24 months. Baselines were: male/female ratio 2:1, mean age 34.7 ± 9.4 yrs; weight 51 ± 9.0 kg, viral load 5.6 ± 0.6 logs, CD4 cell count 101 ± 128 cells/ mm³. Follow up mean values of data logs of VL and CD4+ cell /mm³ counts were: VL 1.7 and CD4+ 265; VL 1.3 and CD4+ 251; VL 1.4 and CD4+ 326 at 6, 12 and 24 months, respectively. Weight gain changes were: 5 ± 9.9 ± 12 and 21 ± 16 kg respectively at 6, 12 and 24 months. A non-concomitant ARV regimen was...

A randomized, comparative study of dual therapy (doxycycline–rifampin) versus triple therapy (doxycycline–rifampin–levofloxacin) for treating acute/subacute brucellosis BJID
Hasanain,Ahmad; Mahdy,Reem; Mohamed,Asmaa; Ali,Mostafa.
Abstract Aim The aim of this study was to compare both the efficacy and safety profile of the WHO-recommended, dual therapy (doxycycline–rifampin) to a quinolone-based, triple therapy (doxycycline–rifampin–levofloxacin) for treating acute/subacute brucellosis. Patients and methods We studied 107 consecutive, naïve patients with acute/subacute brucellosis admitted to Assiut University Hospital. Patients were randomly allocated to receive the dual therapy of doxycycline–rifampin (group-A) or to receive the triple therapy of doxycycline–rifampin–levofloxacin (group-B). Acute/subacute brucellosis was diagnosed based on the presence of: (1) contact with animals or fresh animal products, (2) suggestive clinical manifestations of less than one-year duration,...

Evaluation of disease patterns, treatment and prognosis of tuberculosis in AIDS patient BJID
Atomiya,Angela Naomi; Uip,David Emerson; Leite,Olavo Henrique Munhoz.
Patterns of disease, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of tuberculosis in 100 patients co-infected with AIDS at Casa da AIDS clinic was studied. Demographic characteristics were as follows: 76 male patients, 24 female patients, 67 caucasian, average 35.8 years-old (SD ± 8.5). Sexual transmission of HIV was reported in 68 patients. Pulmonary tuberculosis was seen in 40 patients, extrapulmonary in 11, and combined in 49 patients. In 63 patients, TCD4+ counts were below 200/mm³ when tuberculosis was diagnosed. Fifty-five patients had their diagnoses confirmed by bacteriological identification of Mycobacterium; either through direct observation and/or culture. Tuberculosis was treated with rifampin, isoniazid and pyrazinamide in 60 patients, reinforced...
