Environmental determinants for natural regeneration of gallery forest at the Cerrado/Amazonia boundaries in Brazil Acta Amazonica
Marimon,Beatriz Schwantes; Felfili,Jeanine Maria; Lima,Edson de Souza; Duarte,Wânia M. Gonçalves; Marimon-Júnior,Ben Hur.
Natural regeneration and structure and their relationship to environmental variables were studied in three sections of a gallery forest, in Eastern Mato Grosso, Brazil (14º43′S and 52º21′W). The assumption was that natural regeneration is constrained by environmental determinants at all stages of development of the tree community. The objective was to analyse the forest structure and to verify the relationship between species distribution and abundance at different stages of regeneration and environmental variables. In each section, 47 contiguous (10x10m) permanent plots were established to sample trees (gbh≥15cm), following a systematic design. Seedlings (0.01 to 1m height), saplings (1.01 to 2m) and poles (from 2.01m height to gbh<15cm) were sampled...

Seed bank composition in a secondary forest in the Lower Delta of the Paraná River (Argentina) Acta Botanica
Kalesnik,Fábio; Sirolli,Horacio; Collantes,Marta.
The native forests once occupying the coastal levees of the Lower Delta islands of the Paraná River (in Argentina) have been replaced by commercial forests. Many of those forests have been abandoned, resulting in secondary forest formation that is subject to numerous invasive exotic species. A priori observations suggest that successional trends do not lead to recovery of the original forest. The aim of the present study was to analyze the role of invasive exotic species in these environments and the likelihood of recovery of the original forest cover. Therefore, we examined the composition of the seed bank and of the standing vegetation, as well as the population structure of tree species. Secondary forests are described as being in an intermediate...

Tree mortality in a riparian forest at Rio Paraguai, Pantanal, Brazil, after an extreme flooding Acta Botanica
Damasceno-Junior,Geraldo Alves; Semir,João; Santos,Flavio Antonio Maës dos; Leitão-Filho,Hermógenes de Freitas.
A study was conducted in a riparian forest (Rio Paraguai, Brazil) to verify the vegetation mortality after an exceptional flooding in 1995. Individuals with diameter at breast height > 5 cm were sampled in 108 (10×10m) plots in 1994, and re-sampled in 1996. The total mortality rate was 4.1% per year. The mortality increased with the increasing of topographic positions, at community level, suggesting that places where the flooding is less frequent are more affected by extreme floods.

Structure of potamoplankton along a gradient of preservation of riparian vegetation in subtropical streams Anais da ABC (AABC)
PERESIN,DENISE; TORGAN,LEZILDA C.; SCHULZ,UWE H.; CROSSETTI,LUCIANE O..
Water quality in lotic and lentic systems is greatly influenced by the land use in the adjacent areas. This study was conducted in order to assess whether different degrees of preservation of riparian forest (from well preserved with 30m wide up to degraded with < 5 m wide) influence potamoplankton community structure. The study was conducted in three streams in the upper region of the Rio dos Sinos basin, at four sampling sites, with different width of the forest. Samplings were gathered for abiotic and biological analysis in winter (August 2010) and summer (January/February 2011). The analysis of environmental and biotic variables indicated that seasonality was the main determinant of biomass patterns, regardless of the width of riparian vegetation....

The orchid bee fauna (Hymenoptera, Apidae) of a core area of the Cerrado, Brazil: the role of riparian forests as corridors for forest-associated bees Biota Neotropica
Faria,Luiz Roberto Ribeiro; Silveira,Fernando Amaral da.
The composition of local orchid-bee faunas (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Euglossina) in open-vegetation domains is poorly known, making the ecology and biogeography of the group difficult to understand. The aim of this work was to answer the following questions: i) Is the orchid-bee fauna composition, species richness and abundance in the cerrado (Brazilian savanna) sensu stricto similar to that of riparian forests immersed in that domain? ii) Do species from neighboring forest domains use riparian forests as mesic corridors into the Cerrado? Two sites in cerrado s.s. and two in riparian forests were sampled monthly, one day per month, during one year (Nov/2003-Oct/2004) in northwestern Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Six aromatic compounds (β-ionone, 1,8-cineole,...

Tree species occurring on ariparian slope and correlations with soil variables in the upper Grande River, Minas Gerais, Brazil Ciência Rural
Pereira,Israel Marinho; Botelho,Soraya Alvarenga; Machado,Evandro Luiz Mendonça; Silveira,Carlos Jose Andrade.
Historically, forest landscapes have been modified by human activities, causing its destruction and fragmentation to exploit its resources. However, forests play a vital role in protecting the environment, especially on slops, hilltops, lakes, springs and river banks. This study aimed to understand the diversity and structure of vegetation on a slope of riparian forest in Bocaina de Minas, MG and identify key environmental variables that influence the spatial distribution of individual trees. An inventory of the tree community was conducted, in which ten of 10m×40m plots were allocated and systematically distributed throughout the study area. All individuals existing shrubs and trees within the plots with 1.30m diameter ≥ 5.0cm of soil were sampled in...

Feeding habits of fish from a stream in the savanna of Central Brazil, Araguaia Basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Melo,Cesar Enrique de; Machado,Francisco de Arruda; Pinto-Silva,Vangil.
The objective of the present study was to determine the composition of the diet of fish and its relation to the condition of canopy along a stream in the savanna of Central Brazil. Fish were collected monthly from April 1994 to March 1995. A total of 3872 individuals belonging to 82 species were captured and 1606 of them had their stomach content analysed. Allochthonous resources were widely used by fish. Although some fish groups do present generalist habits, most of the species can be included in well-defined trophic groups. Piscivores were abundant only during the flooding season when they occupied the stream looking for food and reproduction sites. Deforestation of the riparian forest has negative effects on the fish populations that depend on...

Influence of the riparian zone phytophysiognomies on the longitudinal distribution of fishes: evidence from a Brazilian savanna stream Neotropical Ichthyology
Teresa,Fabrício Barreto; Romero,Renato de Mei.
The structure and composition of a fish community in a tributary stream of the Aquidauana River, located in the plateau region of the Paraguay River basin, central west Brazil are described, with special attention to the differential effects of the phytophysiognomies of the Cerrado (a tropical savanna), which are predominant in riparian zones all along their longitudinal gradient. A total of 1,166 individuals belonging to 44 species were captured. Similarity analyses of composition and abundance showed two groups: upstream reaches (R1 and R2) and downstream reaches (R3, R4 and R5), which presented 85.8% of the average dissimilarity. Although physical habitat and physicochemical descriptors varied along the longitudinal gradient of the Correntes stream,...

Development of habitat suitability criteria for Neotropical stream fishes and an assessment of their transferability to streams with different conservation status Neotropical Ichthyology
Teresa,Fabrício Barreto; Casatti,Lilian.
We assessed the preference of 10 fish species for depth and velocity conditions in forested streams from southeastern Brazil using habitat suitability criteria (HSC curves). We also tested whether preference patterns observed in forested streams can be transferred to deforested streams. We used data from fish sampled in 62 five-meter sites in three forested streams to construct preference curves. Astyanax altiparanae, A. fasciatus, Knodus moenkhausii, and Piabina argentea showed a preference for deep slow habitats, whereas Aspidoras fuscoguttatus, Characidium zebra, Cetopsorhamdia iheringi, Pseudopimelodus pulcher, and Hypostomus nigromaculatus showed an opposite pattern: preference for shallow fast habitats. Hypostomus ancistroides showed a multimodal...
