The influence of torsion on braided rope performance, modelling and tests ArchiMer
Davies, Peter; Durville, Damien; Vu, Thanh Do.
Twist may be introduced accidentally into braided ropes during operations at sea, and it is important to know how this will affect both rope integrity and safety coefficients. This paper describes the use of simulation tools to evaluate how twisting can change the tensile properties of braided ropes. The case of a 300 kN break load 12 strand braided HMPE rope is examined. An original numerical modelling approach is presented, and results are compared with results from tensile tests performed on ropes with different levels of twist. A drop in strength of around 4% per turn per meter, and an increase in elongation, were observed as the number of turns per meter increased, corresponding to progressive removal of the load-bearing capacity of half the braided...

Comportement mécanique de fibres et d'assemblages de fibres en polyester pour câbles d'amarrage de plates-formes offshore ArchiMer
Lechat, Céline.
Faced with the need to exploit off-shore oil fields at ever increasing depths, lighter replacements are being considered for the standard steel cable mooring systems used for platforms. This study considers the mechanical behaviour of synthetic ropes made of two different materials: PET and PEN. The first is already used in ropes to replace steel, and the second could be a potential competitor. A multi-scale study, involving mechanical tests (mainly tensile, creep and cyclic loading) has been carried out on assemblies of various sizes, from ropes of several hundreds kN breaking load to their smallest components: filaments. Strong correlations were found between the quasi-static behaviour of assemblies and the behaviour of filaments, which in itself is...

Influence of bedding-in on the tensile performance of HMPE fiber ropes ArchiMer
Bain, Cedric; Davies, Peter; Bles, Guilhem; Marco, Yann; Barnet, Julien.
Synthetic fiber ropes are widely used in the maritime industry, with applications from sailboat rigging to offshore platform mooring lines, thanks to their numerous qualities compared to steel cables: light weight, good specific mechanical properties and excellent marine resistance. A key feature of these ropes is their sensitivity to loading history, as this affects subsequent performance. In the present work the influence of the maximum bedding-in load level and the loading path were studied at the different rope component scales (filament, yarn and braided rope), in order to develop an optimal bedding-in procedure for braided ropes. The load levels were: 10%, 30% and 50% of the tensile break load of the sample. From the results obtained, the influence...

Fatigue of improved polyamide mooring ropes for floating wind turbines ArchiMer
Chevillotte, Yoan; Marco, Yann; Bles, Guilhem; Devos, Karel; Keryer, Mathieu; Arhant, Mael; Davies, Peter.
This paper describes a study of the fatigue characterization of polyamide mooring ropes for floating wind turbines. Under some conditions polyester ropes, which are favoured for offshore oil and gas platform station-keeping, are too stiff for wind turbine moorings, and polyamide may be a suitable alternative. While early studies on fatigue of braided nylon ropes showed very short lifetimes some recent results have indicated that it is possible to significantly enhance lifetime by modifying rope construction and improving fibre coatings. In this paper yarn-on-yarn abrasion testing is used first to evaluate a new yarn coating. Significant lifetime enhancement was noted, so fatigue testing of ropes was then performed. Results confirm that excellent fatigue...
