Diel vertical migration of predators (planktivorous fish larvae) and prey (zooplankton) in a tropical lagoon Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Mendonça,Marcos Marques; Picapedra,Pablo Henrique dos Santos; Ferronato,Michelli Caroline; Sanches,Paulo Vanderlei.
ABSTRACT Based on the hypothesis that diel vertical migration (DVM) is a mechanism of predator avoidance, the objective of the present study was to test for the occurrence of DVM in planktivorous fish larvae of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix, 1829) (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae) and Plagioscion squamosissimus (Heckel, 1840) (Perciformes, Sciaenidae), and zooplankton (rotifers, cladocerans and copepods) in an isolated tropical lagoon in the floodplain of the Upper Paraná River, Brazil (region of Parque Nacional de Ilha Grande). We investigated spatial overlap between predators (planktivorous fish larvae) and prey (zooplankton), and tested which physical and chemical variables of the water are related to the DVM of the studied communities. We performed nocturnal...

Daily variation of zooplankton abundance and evenness in the Rosana reservoir, Brazil: biotic and abiotic inferences Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Takahashi,Érica M.; Lansac-Tôha,Fábio A.; Dias,Juliana D.; Bonecker,Claudia C..
The zooplankton community presents stochastic temporal fluctuation and heterogeneous spatial variation determined by the relationships among the organisms and environmental conditions. We predicted that the temporal and spatial zooplankton distribution is heterogeneous and discrete, respectively, and that the daily variation of most abundant species is related to environmental conditions, specifically the availability of resources. Zooplankton samples were collected daily at three sampling stations in a lateral arm of the Rosana Reservoir (SP/PR). The zooplankton did not present significant differences in abundance and evenness among sampling stations, but the temporal variation of these attributes was significant. Abiotic variables and algal resource...

Synchaeta jollyae (Shiel & Koste) (Rotifera, Synchaetidae): an overlooked species or a newcomer in Neotropical freshwaters? Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Negreiros,Natalia F.; Santos,Renata M. dos; Oliveira,Laira Lúcia Damasceno de; Santos-Wisniewski,Maria J. dos; Rocha,Odete.
Populations of Synchaeta jollyae (Shiel & Koste, 1993) (Rotifera), a species recently recorded for the first time in Brazil and South America, were analyzed in reservoirs in Southeast Brazil. Sampling was carried out monthly from August 2006 to July 2007 at Furnas Reservoir in the Rio Grande basin, state of Minas Gerais, and in four cascade reservoirs in the Tietê River basin (Barra Bonita, Bariri, Ibitinga and Nova Avanhandava) state of São Paulo, in June and September 2008 and in January and May 2009. Synchaeta jollyae occurred in most samples and periods. From the results obtained it is evident that S. jollyae occurs in water bodies of varied trophic status but reaches larger populations in eutrophic water bodies and during lower temperature...

Trophic role of large benthic sulfur bacteria in mangrove sediment ArchiMer
Pascal, Pierre-yves; Dubois, Stanislas; Boschker, Henricus T. S.; Gros, Olivier.
Large filamentous sulfur-oxidizing bacteria belonging to the Beggiatoacae family can cover large portions of shallow marine sediments surrounding mangroves in Guadeloupe (French West Indies). In order to assess the importance of Beggiatoa mats as an infaunal food source, observations were conducted of the area within mats and at increasing distances from mats. We used natural isotopic compositions and a C-13 enrichment study. Both revealed an ingestion of bacterial mats by associated meiofauna, dominated by rotifers and to a smaller extent by small polychaetes and nematodes. Compared to adjacent sites, sediment covered by bacterial mats presented a higher abundance of diatoms, whereas the total biomass of bacteria did not vary. This constant bacterial...

Impact of arachidonic acid enrichment of live rotifer prey on bacterial communities in rotifer and larval fish cultures ArchiMer
Seychelles, Laurent H.; Doiron, Kim; Audet, Celine; Tremblay, Rejean; Pernet, Fabrice; Lemarchand, Karine.
Rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis), commonly used at first feeding in commercial fish hatcheries, carry a large bacteria load. Because they are relatively poor in essential fatty acids, it is common practice to enrich them with fatty acids, including arachidonic acid (AA). This study aims to determine whether prey enrichment with AA may act as a prebiotic and modify the microbial community composition either in AA-enriched rotifer cultures or in larval-rearing water using winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) as a larval fish model. AA enrichment modified the bacterial community composition in both the rotifer culture tanks and the larval-rearing tanks. We observed an increase in the number of cultivable bacteria on TCBS (thiosulfate-citrate-bile...

Effect of Frequency of Fertilisation on Abundance of Rotifers and Protozoa in Flooded Ponds and Simulation Tanks OceanDocs
Kyewalyanga, M.S.; Mwandya, A.W..
Experiments to assess a suitable rate of fertilisation of earthen ponds for production of rotifers and protozoa were conducted in April 2000. Production of rotifers and protozoa (hereinafter collectively referred to as rotifers) was stimulated by flooding the ponds using seawater and rainfall. In the simulations, seawater diluted to 20 ppt salinity activated initial production. In all systems, the fertiliser concentration was approximately 1 ml of chicken manure to 2 litres of seawater. Three different rates of fertilisation were tested. The results clearly showed that the higher the frequency of addition of manure, the higher the production of rotifers per ml. Fertilised ponds had maximum averages of between 64 and 76 rotifers/ml as compared to a maximum...

Brachionus rotundiformis Tschugunoff, 1921 from the Brachionus plicatilis species complex (Rotifera: Monogononta): A new record from Galápagos Archipelago, Ecuador Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
López,Carlos; Steinitz-Kannan,Miriam; Stamou,Georgia; Michaloudi,Evangelia; Papakostas,Spiros; Fontaneto,Diego; Segers,Hendrik.
Abstract The presence of the rotifer species Brachionus rotundiformis from the B. plicatilis species complex in Lake Arcturo, a saline lake in the Genovesa Island of the Galápagos Islands, is here reported. This is the first record of the species for the rotifer fauna of Ecuador as well as of the species complex to the Galápagos Islands. This finding is consistent with the idea of high dispersion capacity, and of cosmopolitan distribution of this species complex. Because Genovesa Island is uninhabited, passive transport by wind currents and zoochory by migrant birds seem to emerge as the most plausible factors in this process of colonization. Integrative studies on the morphological variations, genetic, molecular, and ecological aspects are still required...

Zooplankton capturing by Nile Tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Teleostei: Cichlidae) throughout post-larval development Rev. Bras. Zool.
Ibrahim,Adriana N.A. Fattah; Noll,Maria S.M. Castilho; Valenti,Wagner C..
ABSTRACT The Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758), uses filter feeding and visual predation to catch prey. In filter feeding, the mucus secreted in their gill rakers traps planktonic organisms. In visual predation, the fish spot and capture food, eating it directly. At different ontogenetic stages, the Nile tilapia may impact the zooplankton community differently, since it changes how it captures its prey. The objective in this study was to verify which zooplankton groups contribute to the diet of O. niloticus at the post-larval stage, and if the way they capture food may determine prey size. We evaluated the diet of Nile tilapia kept in ponds for four months. We randomly removed one fish per pond every month. Stomach contents and gills of...

Monoculture of the ciliate protozoan Euplotes sp. (Ciliophora; Hypotrichia) fed with different diets - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i1.11795 Biological Sciences
Côrtes, Guilherme de Freitas; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina; Tsuzuki, Monica Yumi; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina; Costa Melo, Emílio Mateus.
Ciliate protozoa of the genus Euplotes commonly appears contaminating mass cultures of rotifers but also with potential to be used as live food in the larviculture of marine fish. To obtain a monoculture of Euplotes sp., three diets were tested: 1) microalgae Nannochloropsis oculata, 2) commercial diet for rotifers Culture Selco 3000, and 3) baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). The ciliates were inoculated at 10 ind. mL-¹. On day 5, protozoa densities in the groups fed the commercial diet (1,911.0 ± 248.7 ind. mL-¹) and the baker’s yeast (2,600.0 ± 195.3 ind. mL-1) did not differ, but were higher than the group fed microalgae (2.0 ± 1.4 ind. mL-1) (p < 0.05). On day 6, the density in the group fed baker’s yeast was higher (15,484.0 ± 1,164.9...

Occurrence of concavities on the lorica of two species of Testudinella (Rotifera, Monogononta, Testudinellidae) Biota Neotropica
Coelho,Paula Nunes; Braghin,Louizi Souza Magalhães; Lansac-Tôha,Fabio Amodêo; Henry,Raoul.
Abstract: Testudinella is a taxon of Rotifera broadly distributed in Brazil. In a recent collection in marginal lakes connected to the Paranapanema River (São Paulo, Brazil), we found specimens of Testudinella mucronata and T. patina with concavities on their lorica. The objective of this study was to describe the concavities observed in individuals of both species and discuss their possible causes. Plankton samples were collected at two sampling stations, in the pelagic (PZ) and littoral (LZ) zones of the Panema and Coqueiral lakes; both of these lakes are ultra-oligotrophic and not polluted. For T. mucronata, 4% of individuals with concavities were found in the PZ of Coqueiral lake and 50% in the LZ of Panema lake. In T. patina, the proportion of...

Effect of Bacillus firmus C101 on the growth of Litopenaeus vannamei Boone (White Shrimp) post-larvae, and Brachionus plicatilis s.s. Müller (Rotifer) Boletín de Investigaciones
Ruiz-Toquica,Jordan Steven; Becerra-Real,Laura Milena; Villamil-Díaz,Luisa Marcela.
ABSTRACT The growing demand for aquaculture protein suggests seeking biotechnological alternatives that improve the cultivation of species of commercial interest. In this study, Bacillusfirmus C101 was evaluated as a growth promoter and probiotic potential, which was characterized and subsequently administered (106 CFU mL-1 * day) in post-larvae of white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and rotifers (Brachionusplicatilis sensu stricto). B. firmus C101 was observed to have the tolerance to bile salts, strong phosphatase activity, and antimicrobial activity against pathogens such as Vibrio alginolyticus and Aeromonas hydrophila, among others. On the other hand, after its administration for three weeks to postlarvae of shrimp, it caused a significant increase (p...

Planktonic and non-planktonic rotifers in two environments of the Upper Paraná River floodplain, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil BABT
Bonecker,Cláudia C.; Lansac-Tôha,Fábio A.; Rossa,Dayane C..
Investigations were carried out for the composition and occurrence of rotifer taxa of different forms and sizes during two distinct hydrological periods, in two environments (river and lake). Two sampling stations were established in open water of each environments. Surface samples were taken daily for 14 days. The faunistic similarity between the environments was established using Jaccard's index. One hundred and fourty three taxa were identified. The largest number of taxa was recorded in the river. Faunistic similarity between these environments was greater during high water. The planktonic taxa predominated and the difference for the non-planktonic ones was not marked. Non-planktonic taxa predominated in the river, while both types were numerous in the...

Variation of density, species composition and dominance of Rotifers at a shallow tropical reservoir (Broa reservoir, SP, Brazil) in a short scale time BJB
RODRÍGUEZ,M. P.; MATSUMURA-TUNDISI,T..
Rotifers are the predominant group of zooplankton found in the majority of reservoirs, constituting more than 60% of the total zooplankton present. Being opportunistic organisms, they easily adapt to changes in environmental conditions, and it is therefore difficult to establish a constant level of composition and occurrence of a species in specific areas at specific times. In order to establish how changes in composition and predominance of a species occurs within a dynamic system, the daily variation in the total density of rotifers and that of the dominant species were studied at short intervals during a period of 20 days at Lobo (Broa) reservoir. Filinia pejleri and Keratella americana were the predominant species, making up 64.3% of the total...
