Control of Footrot in Small Ruminants of Nepal AgEcon
McLeod, Ross.
Footrot, a bacterial disease which attacks the feet of sheep and goats causing lameness and high levels of flock mortality, was endemic in the western districts of Nepal. As a result of the collaborative efforts between Nepalese, Australian and British scientists within ACIAR projects AS2/1991/017 and AS2/1996/021, the virulent form of this disease has been eradicated from the livestock industries of the country. The economic benefits stemming from this achievement are described and quantified in this report. Over the 1993–2022 period, ACIAR invested $A1.5 million in research designed to improve the management of footrot in Nepal. Based on levels of disease prevalence reported at the beginning of the projects and a probability of the disease spreading to...

Disaggregate Productivity Growth in Livestock Production: A Directional Malmquist Index Approach AgEcon
Ludena, Carlos E.; Hertel, Thomas W.; Preckel, Paul V.; Foster, Kenneth A.; Nin Pratt, Alejandro.
Limited data on the allocation of inputs to different activities has limited agricultural economists' attempts to measure sub-sector productivity growth in agriculture. However, recent developments have enabled us to estimate total factor productivity (TFP) growth for crops and livestock accounting for input-output allocation. This paper extends previous work on TFP measurement for livestock into ruminants and non-ruminant productivity measurement, given the differences in productivity growth rates among these species. The results show that the non-ruminant sector is more dynamic than the ruminant sector, driving most of the productivity growth within the livestock sector. Given the rapid rates of productivity growth observed recently, non-ruminant...

Forage based animal production systems and sustainability, an invited keynote R. Bras. Zootec.
Chaudhry,Abdul Shakoor.
Forages are essential for the successful operation of animal production systems. This is more relevant to ruminants which are heavily dependant upon forages for their health and production in a cost-effective and sustainable manner. While forages are an economical source of nutrients for animal production, they also help conserve the soil integrity, water supply and air quality. Although the role of these forages for animal production could vary depending upon the regional preferences for the animal and forage species, climate and resources, their importance in the success of ruminant production is acknowledged. However with the increasing global human population and urbanisation, the sustainability of forage based animal production systems is sometimes...

Estimation of the total efficiency of metabolizable energy utilization for maintenance and growth by cattle in tropical conditions R. Bras. Zootec.
Henrique,Douglas Sampaio; Vieira,Ricardo Augusto Mendonça; Malafaia,Pedro Antônio Muniz; Mancini,Maurício Cordeiro; Gonçalves,André Luigi.
Data of 320 animals were obtained from eight comparative slaughter studies performed under tropical conditions and used to estimate the total efficiency of utilization of the metabolizable energy intake (MEI), which varied from 77 to 419 kcal kg-0.75d-1. The provided data also contained direct measures of the recovered energy (RE), which allowed calculating the heat production (HE) by difference. The RE was regressed on MEI and deviations from linearity were evaluated by using the F-test. The respective estimates of the fasting heat production and the intercept and the slope that composes the relationship between RE and MEI were 73 kcal kg-0.75d-1, 42 kcal kg-0.75d-1 and 0.37. Hence, the total efficiency was estimated by dividing the net energy for...

Effects of dietary brown propolis on nutrient intake and digestibility in feedlot lambs R. Bras. Zootec.
Silva,Jonilson Araújo da; Ítavo,Camila Celeste Brandão Ferreira; Ítavo,Luís Carlos Vinhas; Morais,Maria da Graça; Franco,Gumercindo Loriano; Zeoula,Lucia Maria; Heimbach,Natália da Silva.
The present study tested brown propolis in crude or extract form as a feed supplement for feedlot lambs to identify the type that most improves in vivo nutrient digestibility. Digestibility was assessed by both total fecal collection and internal markers and the results obtained by these techniques were compared. The completely randomized design was used to compare feed intake and nutrient digestibility of 24 male lambs aged seven months among four dietary treatments (crude brown propolis, propolis ethanol extract, monensin sodium, and control). Methods of feces collection were compared using a completely randomized split-plot design, with experimental diets corresponding to the main factor and the methods to estimate fecal production as the sub-factor....

Sunflower cake from biodiesel production fed to crossbred Boer kids R. Bras. Zootec.
Agy,Mariza Sufiana Faharodine Aly; Oliveira,Ronaldo Lopes; Ribeiro,Claudio Vaz Di Mambro; Ribeiro,Marinaldo Divino; Bagaldo,Adriana Regina; Araújo,Gherman Garcia Leal de; Pinto,Luís Fernando Batista; Ribeiro,Rebeca Dantas Xavier.
The intake of the dry matter (DM), the crude protein (CP) and the metabolizable energy intake (ME) in megacalories per day (Mcal/day) were not affected by the diets. In contrast, the intake of neutral detergent fiber (NDF), in g/kg BW, increased linearly. An increasing linear effect was also observed for the ether extract (EE) intake, whereas a decreasing linear performance was observed for the non-fibrous carbohydrate (NFC) intake. The digestibility of DM, organic matter and NFC decreased linearly with the sunflower cake inclusion, whereas the digestibility of CP, NDF, and EE were not influenced by the diets. No effect was observed for the concentration of serum glucose or urea nitrogen serum. No effect was observed on the urea nitrogen serum in the hours...
