The report examines the relationships between agricultural policies in the North China Plain, the approaches to water management that evolved from them, the quantity of water that was actually used, and the consequent groundwater depletion beneath Luancheng County, Hebei Province, from 1949 to 2000. To systematically address these relationships, we use a comprehensive water-balance approach. Our results indicate that a single, longstanding policy-that of using groundwater to meet the crop-water requirements not supplied by precipitation-is responsible for the steady rate of groundwater decline. |

This paper criticises the neo-classical assumptions of perfect factor markets and of complete information, which constitute central elements in labour market theory. Based on a literature review and on economic reports from transition economies, as well as developing countries and more advanced economies, this deliverable focuses on the structural impediments and imperfections that often characterise rural labour markets and that may prevent an efficient allocation of labour. According to empirical studies, transactions costs and rigidities hinder the well-functioning of labour markets and constrain labour adjustments. The paper attempts to classify the various limitations of rural labour markets from both the supply and demand side, although the... |

This paper introduces the derived process of the empirical mode that the investment in education has made a good contribution to the economic growth. Based on this point, taking Yongchuan region as an example and depending on the related statistics collected from 1981 to 2008, the paper carries out a study on the direct influences and the spillover that the investment in rural education makes to the economic growth through Feide Mode, that the fitting accuracy of the regression equation is relatively high and each variable coefficient has undergo very detailed significant tests. The study shows that the influence coefficient of investment in education to the economic growth is 0.821. The contribution to the economic growth is comparatively low, less than 1... |

On the basis of spatial-temporal perspective, by using the data of farmers’ net income per capita from 1996 to 2007 in counties of Guangxi coupled with the global and local spatial auto-correlation analysis of ESDA and GIS technology, we conduct the empirical research on the rural economic developmental disparity of counties in Guangxi and the evolving characteristics of local spatial heterogeneity. The results show that the rural economic developmental disparity of counties in Guangxi from 1996 to 2007 varies infinitesimally on the whole, and the regions with similar rural economic developmental level have spatial concentrated distribution. Based on these, the local MORAN’S I scatter diagram and LISA concentration diagram are drawn. In comparison with the... |

There are an increasing number of references in the literature on the significance of the role of farm households and farm families in the development of multifunctional agriculture. The motivation and intentions of 104 farmers in three LEADER micro-regions in Northern and Eastern Hungary with respect to the present and future structures of their farms (including the expansion of non-agricultural activities and functions) were investigated using questionnaires and narrative interviews. Almost two-thirds of the respondents spoke of the existence of non-agricultural activities and functions, but few of these were market-driven. The farmers ranked the steps that should be taken to increase multifunctionality in their own micro-regions in order of importance... |

The current status of new-type rural financial institutions in the Yellow River delta is summarized. It is pointed out that these financial institutions have improved the development of economy concerning agriculture, rural areas and peasants, but due to the shortage of capital, deficit and many other reasons, the outlets is fewer, which can not serve the agriculture, rural areas and peasants well. The necessity of developing rural banks in the Yellow River delta is introduced: in the first place, rural banks can serve the agriculture, rural areas and peasants well with flexible system and management methods. Even though farming accounts for only about 1 percent of the total national workforce, it is at the core of the food and fiber system. The system is one of the largest sectors in the U.S. economy, and is comprised of industries related to farming, including feed, seed, fertilizer, machinery, food processing, manufacturing, and exporting. The interrelationships among the sectors of the food and fiber system and the U.S. and world economies are many and complex. As a result, U.S. and world policies and economic factors--such as interest and inflation rates--play a critical role in everything from the cost and availability of farm credit to the demand for farm products at home and abroad. The farm crisis of the 1980's illustrates how specific economic events... |

U.S. agriculture is undergoing a tidal wave of change in its structure. A shift to supply chains and away from commodities and commodity markets is the hallmark of this new wave. The new agriculture of the 21st century will bring with it a new geography that may be nothing short of a revolution for rural America. Supply chains will tend to concentrate activity geographically and change the local economic dynamic where they do locate. Finally, the tide of change in agriculture's structure means a whole new slate of policy issues. Concentration, market access, and the delivery mechanism for government support all become bigger concerns with supply chains. But perhaps the biggest policy challenge looming ahead is addressing rural America's economic... |
