Since 1983, tuna purse seine fishery has increased rapidly in the Indian Ocean. This fishery, being mostly based in Seychelles, represents an excellent opportunity to this country. However, it is essential that a good management strategy be adopted in order to ensure the rational exploitation of the resources. Since this fishery is in its early stage of development, it is not yet possible to obtain an accurate assessment of the stocks based on usual stock assessment methods. Nevertheless, from existing knowledge on the Indian and Atlantic oceans, a preliminary analysis of the resources is attempted.
