Profiles of 0.1 N HCl leachable Pb and Zn in the sediments of the Gulf of Lions (North West Mediterranean) indicate that the concentrations of these metals are, especially in the vicinity of the triple-overdot Rhone outflow and in the Rhone plume, determined by input from the river. Solid phase Pb and Zn are more than three times higher than their pre-industrial background. At the offshore, deep ( > 2 000 m) stations in the Gulf of Lions, the surface concentration of solid phase Pb and Zn are about twofold enriched compared to background values. The profiles from these deep stations preserve, due to the restricted mobility of Pb and Zn and the lack of bioturbation in the sediment, a historical record of the increased atmospheric deposition of these... |

The study of Cd and Hg distribution in the sediments, water and suspended matter of the Bay of Marennes-Oléron provided the opportunity to identify the factors governing the distribution of these two contaminants throughout the bay. On one hand, these elements are associated with the continental inputs from the Charente river which settle on arrivaI at the mouth of the estuary and in the eastern part of the bay. The Cd and Hg present in these deposits are associated with POC, as weIl as with Mn and Fe oxides and hydroxides. On the other hand, a portion of the dissolved inputs is recycled in the bay waters through phytoplankton activity. This mechanism contributes, particularly in the case of Cd, to increased particulate metal fluxes from the water column... |

Mineral magnetic and chemical studies indicate the impact and great importance of atmospheric versus riverine input of particles in the sediments of the Gulf of Lions and provide some strong indications about the presence of anthropogenic particles in offshore deep sediments of this region. The data indicate that Saharan dust and anthropogenic particles coexist at several depth intervals in the sediment, supporting the hypothesis that Saharan dust episodes could play an important role in facilitating deposition and coprecipitation of anthropogenic particles from the atmosphere and the water column. |

The benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages of the Argentine continental shelf were studied from samples of molluscs, echinoderms and bryozoans collected by the RN Shinkai Maru. Two major faunal groups were distinguished: one inhabiting the warmer inner shelf off Buenos Aires and northern Patagonia, and the other occupying the colder middle and outer shelf off Buenos Aires and most of the Patagonian shelf. These results confirm the traditional biogeographic division of the Argentine continental shelf into two provinces: Argentine and Magellanic. Furthermore, the results suggest the possibility of subdividing the Atlantic sector of the Magellanic province into two districts: Patagonian and Malvinean, under the influence of the Patagonian and the Malvinas... |

Surface sediments were collected in the Rhone delta, NW Mediterranean, at two seasons and analyzed for composition of non-aromatic hydrocarbons (NAH), long-chain linear alkylbenzenes (LAB) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) by GC and GC/MS following fractionation by normal phase HPLC. Concentrations varied from 21.2 to 166.7 mu/g for NAH, from 2097.9 to 9324.2 ng/g for total PAH and from 342.5 to 2713.0 ng/g for LAB. These levels are comparable to those reported for other coastal areas worldwide in the vicinity of important urban and industrial activities. Detailed analysis permitted identification of several contributions to the bulk sedimentary hydrocarbon mixture from fossil fuel related sources, pyrolytic processes, domestic wastes as well as... |

Analyses of mineralogy, granulometry and chemistry - aluminium, cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, zinc, organic carbon, total nitrogen and phosphorus - are carried out in a Mediterranean lagoon: Etang de Thau. Shell-fish breeding and tourism make the Thau basin an important place for studying the impact of pollution within a lagoon environment. The spatial distribution of the metallic elements is related to the fine fraction (< 63-mu-m) and to the organic matter concentration of the sediment. Multivariate analysis gives a global picture of the incidence of micropolluants. It reveals a boarder zone poor in metals and organic matter which is greatly eroded by the bottom current. Several zones in the north and centre of the... |
