Salmonella fecal excretion control in broiler chickens by organic acids and essential oils blend feed added Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Borsoi,A; Santos,LR; Diniz,GS; C. Salle,CTP; Moraes,HLS; Nascimento,VP.
Salmonellosis is an important disease with economic impact as it may affect animal performance and may result in foodborne disease in humans through the eggs and carcass contamination. Regarding the Salmonella control, it is possible to decrease its fecal excretion and the contamination of chicken carcasses by adding organic acids to the feed or drinking water at appropriate times. The aim of this study was to test a blend of organic acids and essential oils in broilers challenged with Salmonella Enteritidis (SE), and to verify the fecal excretion of Salmonella. Sixty broilers were placed in four groups. One group was the negative control. Another group was orally inoculated at 1 day-old with 10(5) CFU/mL of SE as a positive SE control. Two groups (T3 and...

Detection and transfer of antimicrobial resistance gene integron in Salmonella Enteritidis derived from avian material Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Okamoto,AS; Andreatti Filho,RL; Rocha,TS; Menconi,A; Marietto-Gonçalves,GA.
The expansion of global poultry production has increased the need to reduce or control the agents responsible for economic losses, including Salmonella spp. These bacteria are also of public health concern due to their potential to cause food poisoning, and, more recently, due to the antimicrobial resistance presented by these bacteria. Molecular biology is an important tool currently used in the diagnosis and research studies of main poultry diseases. The present studied analyzed 100 samples of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) isolated from avian material aiming at detecting the class 1 integron gene, Integroninvolved in antimicrobial resistance, by means of polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and comparing it with plate inhibition test. Subsequently, SE samples...

Organic acids and/or compound with defined microorganisms to control Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis experimental infection in chickens Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Sterzo,EV; Paiva,JB; Mesquita,AL; Freitas Neto,OC; Berchieri Jr,A.
The association of human foodborne salmonellosis with poultry products enhanced the efforts to control Salmonella Enteritidis in poultry farms. Dietary organic acid supplementation is one of the measures currently used to reduce the presence of undesirable microorganisms. Another method to control enteric Salmonella in poultry is competitive exclusion using defined or undefined microorganisms products. Organic acids and microbiological methods to accelerate the development of the intestinal microbiota can be used individually or in combination. The present study evaluated the effect of dietary supplementation of an acidifier and of a defined multi-strain microbial mixture (Biomin® PoultryStar) via drinking water in the control of the intestinal...

Genomic variants of bacteriophages against Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis with potential application in the poultry industry Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Robeson,J; Retamales,J; Borie,C.
Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE) is a prevalent gastrointestinal pathogen worldwide, threatening both animal and human health. In the latter, disease is associated to the consumption of SE-contaminated products from the poultry industry. The control of SE infection is largely based on the use of antibiotics and vaccines, but the use of lytic bacteriophages is re-emerging as an additional strategy for SE control. In fact, a number of recent reports point to the adequacy of bacteriophage as an efficient prophylactic or therapeutic countermeasure to SE infections. However, less attention has been focused on the basic biology of these bacteriophages. Here we report on three bacteriophages (f18, IF1 and EST2) that share a common viral particle...

Validation of Alternative Methods of Detection of Salmonella Spp. in Experimentally Contaminated Poultry Environmental Samples Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Coelho,LR; Melo,RT; Monteiro,GP; Reischak,D; Mendonça,AO; Tavares,AAS; Rossi,DA.
ABSTRACT The analysis of Salmonella in the feces and the birds’ environment is a way of monitoring the colonization in the flocks and verifying the need for the introduction of stricter controls, in such a way that the results of the tests should be known before being sent for slaughter. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR), as well as other rapid methods represent alternatives increasingly used to detect enteric pathogens, but they need proof of effectiveness for their wide use. The aim of this study was to evaluate the equivalence between the results obtained by the methods: real-time PCR (BAX® System), Modified Rappaport-Vassiliadis Semi-solid Medium (MSRV) (ISO 6579) and the traditional method of official reference in Brazil for research of S....

Time required to protect the intestinal tract of chicks against Salmonella enterica serovar enteritidis using competitive exclusion Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Sterzo,EV; Paiva,JB; Penha Filho,RAC; Berchieri Junior,A.
Competitive exclusion (CE) has been designed to accelerate the colonization of the alimentary tract of young commercial birds and it has been also used to repopulate the digestive tract after antibiotic therapy. The method has been successfully adopted as a means to prevent enteric salmonellosis. The present study was carried out to evaluate if CE is able to prevent this kind of infection. Newly hatched chicks were given a CE culture and at different intervals of time birds infected with Salmonella Enteritidis were placed together with the group of treated birds. CE culture was prepared from feces of adult laying hens incubated overnight at 37C under aerobic conditions. Birds were killed 4 and 8 days after challenge and viable counts of Salmonella...

Albuquerque,ÁH; Cardoso,WM; Teixeira,RSC; Lopes,ES; Sales,RJPF; Horn,RV; Rocha-e-Silva,RC; Bezerra,WGA; Gomes-Filho,VJR.
Two groups of domestic pigeons (Columba livia) were experimentally infected orally with doses of 9.5 x10(7) and 9.5 x10(9) CFU/mL (group A and B, respectively) of a Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) strain isolated from chickens. None of the used doses caused mortality of the inoculated birds; however, the pathogen was successfully recovered from the liver and spleen of group B birds on day 7 post-inoculation (dpi). Pathogen shedding, as evaluated through cloacal swabs, occurred in both groups until the 14th day of observation (p <0.05). Among all fecal samples collected from group B (n=4), three different birds shed the pathogen in their feces, out of which two were positive on 3 dpi and one on 7 dpi. The same number of fecal samples was evaluated in group A...

Li,X; Liu,L; Li,Q; Xu,G; Zheng,J.
ABSTRACT Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serotype Enteritidis (SE) has caused foodborne infections over decades. It is transmitted mainly from contaminated eggs to humans. SE is commonly present in layer houses, and closely interacts with environmental factors. The objective of the present study was to develop a viable PCR method to identify SE in environmental samples collected in layer farms of different sizes, and to evaluate SE contamination status in four main egg-production provinces of northern China. After specificity retrieval using Primer-BLAST against the NCBI database, three SE specific oligonucleotide primers were selected as candidate primers. The primers targeting Prot6e gene were adopted and primers targeting Sdf I were also...

Effect of evaporated ethyl pyruvate on reducing salmonella enteritidis in raw chicken meat Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Cetin,B; Uran,H; Konak,M.
ABSTRACT In this study, the effect of evaporated ethyl pyruvate (EP) was evaluated for the decontamination of Salmonella Enteritidis on chicken leg meat as a safe alternative to antimicrobial agent. Also, total aerobic mesophilic bacteria (TAMB), Enterobacteriaceae, Escherichia coli and yeast-mold counts samples were investigated. Subsequently, the samples were injected with 0, 42, 105 and 420 mg evaporated EP/L air to the paper filter attached to the container cover and stored at +4 °C for 10 days. According to the results, 42 mg EP/L concentration did not cause a significant decrease in Salmonella Enteritidis count (p>0.05). However, it was determined that 105 and 420 mg EP/L treatments reduced the number of Salmonella Enteritidis by more than 1 and 2...

Use of Organic Acids and A Competitive Exclusion Product as Growth Promoter and Salmonella Enteritidis Control in Commercial Turkeys Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Milbradt,EL; Okamoto,AS; Padovani,CR; Fascina,VB; Silva,TM; Altarúgio,R; Hataka,A; Schmidt,EMS; Andreatti Filho,RL.
ABSTRACT It is estimated that Salmonella causes one million illnesses in the United States annually, with 19,000 hospitalizations and 380 deaths. There are various serotypes of this bacterium, and the serotypes Typhimurium and Enteritidis are commonly isolated from outbreaks and, in most cases, present resistance to the antibiotics utilized in clinical medicine. One of the current theories to explain the emergence of bacterial resistance is the continuous use of antibiotics as growth promoters in animal feeds. Despite the lack of evidences that antibiotic growth promoters cause bacterial resistance, the poultry industry has explored strategies to reduce or to eliminate the use of antibiotic growth promoters in the production chain, including the...

Salmonella Enteritidis em Aves: Retrospectiva no Brasil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Silva,EN; Duarte,A.

Evaluation of Disinfectants Used in Pre-Chilling water Tanks of Poultry Processing Plants Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Guastalli,BHL; Batista,DFA; Souza,AIS; Guastalli,EAL; Lopes,PD; Almeida,AM; Prette,N; Barbosa,FO; Stipp,DT; Freitas Neto,OC.
ABSTRACT In poultry processing plants, disinfectants are often added to pre-chilling water tanks to reduce microbial contamination. The present study aimed at evaluating the effect of five disinfectants (acidified sodium chlorite, alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, chlorine dioxide, peracetic acid, and sodium hypochlorite) on the populations of food quality indicator microorganisms and on Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) in the presence and absence of organic matter. The results showed that chlorine dioxide and sodium hypochlorite did not reduce microbial carcass counts. On the other hand, acidified sodium chlorite, alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride and peracetic acid reduced total and fecal coliform counts. Peracetic acid reduced the number of...

The Effect of Serial Culture and Storage on the Protective Potential of a Competitive Exclusion Preparation Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Almeida,WAF; Berchieri Junior,A; Barrow,PA.
The competitive exclusion method (EC) was used to protect day-old birds against colonisation of the intestinal tract by Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE). The culture prepared in nutrient broth incubated at 37ºC/24 h inhibited SE growth in the caecal contents. The beneficial effect was also observed after serial passage of the feces culture for up to 14 times. The material obtained after 12 serial sub-cultures after storage for 28 days at 4-6ºC also kept its action on SE.
