Última Diversity of medium and large neotropical mammals in an area of mixed rain forest Biological Sciences Marques, Rosane Vera; Fabián, Marta Elena.  Medium and large mammals (> 1 kg) were studied using camera traps with active sensors in a Conservation Unit located in an area of Mixed Rain Forest or Araucaria Forest (Atlantic Forest at altitude) in the South of Brazil, as a method for investigating the area’s conservation status and enabling comparison with other types of environments in which these mammals occur in the Neotropical region. From June 2005 to December 2010, a sampling effort of 10,844 trap-days yielded records of 21 species. A minimum sampling effort of 3000 trap-days was necessary to obtain records of all of these species. Chironomidae is a common family in freshwaters, often occurring at high densities, which hinders the processing of large samples, given that time and labor are usually limited. The present study aims at evaluating the extent of the error related with the subsampling of Chironomidae from a larger sample with regard to the size of the individuals between a sample and the subsample. ABSTRACT Richness estimators (Jackknife 1, Bootstrap, Chao 1 and ACE) were used to relate zooplankton species richness with amount of water collected per sample and number of samples throughout the year for the limnetic region of Sapucai River compartment of Furnas reservoir, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Seven 100 L samples were collected in sequence using a motor pump, and seven 70 L samples were collected in sequence using a plankton net (68 μm mesh size) in vertical hauls, to totalize 450 L, in three stations of the reservoir. The objective in the present work is to test whether the capture sequence of species during a bat survey is related to species abundance. Species with capture rates lower than 0.01x10-3 captures/hour-net were considered rare.
