Different sizes of the smallest individual sampled and their interpretations: case study in the seasonally dry forest PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Arruda, Daniel Meira; Batista, Márcio Luiz; Simão, Marcos Vinicius Ribeiro de Castro; Duque-Brasil, Reinaldo; Ferreira-Júnior, Walnir Gomes; Schaefer, Carlos Ernesto Gonçalves Reynald.
The dry forests, widely distributed in Brazil, are formations subject to different sampling method. Consequently, the data generated may affect the comparison among other vegetation formations. Therefore, this study presents and discusses changes caused by sampling vegetation using circumference at soil height (CSH) ≥ 10 cm and circumference at breast height (CBH) ≥ 15 cm. Different criteria provide an ambiguous vision of a same forest fragment, resulting in different structure and species richness.

Eucalipto, madeira serrada, metodologia de amostragem, regressão multivariada. Log sampling of Eucalyptus grandis trees submitted to selection for sawn timber and energy purposes PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Santos, Paulo Eduardo Telles dos; Lavoranti, Osmir José; Salante, Laurindo.
By the assessment of ten technological traits of eucalypt wood for sawn timber and energy purposes,it was developed a multivariate statistical procedure in order to determine the sequence of logs to be sampled, in such a way to represent all statistical variation contained within the tree and, accordingly, to establish the appropriate sampling intensity. In the present work, it was used a total of 40 logs from four trees of Eucalyptus grandis provenance Concórdia-SC aged 18 years. By using principal components regression analysis and stepwise selection techniques, it was showed that only two logs, corresponding to the first (0.05 m to 2.60 m) and fourth (8.85 m to 11.40 m) positions into the tree, contained 99.2 % of the total variation detected...

Protocol for collecting Mutillidae (Hymenoptera, Aculeata) in ecological studies: species-area effects on Mutillidae communities Rev. Bras. entomol.
Aranda,Rodrigo; Graciolli,Gustavo.
ABSTRACT The species-area relationship is one of the most consistent patterns in ecology, and fragmentation is a major cause of habitat loss. Environmental changes in a site can affect the spatial distribution of organisms. Knowledge of Mutillidae ecology is still scarce due to the lack of standardized sampling. Our aim was to: (1) determine the effect of habitat fragmentation on the Mutillidae community and (2) establish a standard method for sampling Mutillidae in ecological studies. Sampling was conducted in four fragments of Brazilian Savanna in an urbanized matrix. We used quadrats with different areas: 25 m2, 100 m2 and 400 m2 to verify sampling effort. Male and female Mutillidae were collected from each of these three treatments. Males were...

Effectiveness of quadrat sampling on terrestrial cave fauna survey - a case study in a Neotropical cave Biological Sciences
Bichuette, Maria Elina; Simões, Luiza Bertelli; von Schimonsky, Diego Monteiro; Gallão, Jonas Eduardo.
Quadrat sampling is a method used for a long time in plant ecology studies but only recently it has been used with focus on fauna. For the cave fauna samplings, there are rare works applying this methodology. The present study compared the methods of quadrat sampling with direct search qualitative for terrestrial cave fauna. For this, we conducted five sampling collections in a limestone cave in central Brazil. Quadrat sampling contributed with 121 exclusive species and 716 specimens and direct search qualitative method contributed with 91 exclusive species and 355 specimens. Mann-Whitney test evidenced significant differences between the two methods. We demonstrated that quadrat sampling method was slightly more efficient to analyze the species richness...
