This study was designed to test the effect of different fractions of ethanolic extracts of young (y) and mature (m) leaves of Serjania lethalis A. St- Hil (Sapindaceae) on sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) seedling growth and metaxylem cells. Crude ethanolic extracts were prepared from the powder of young and mature S. lethalis leaves and fractionated by means of column chromatography. For the seedling growth bioassay, sesame seeds germinated at concentrations of 0.8, 0.4 and 0.2 mg mL-1 were used. After seven days, the lengths of the aerial part and of the primary root were measured. The sesame metaxylem cell growth bioassay was performed with seedlings grown in solutions containing the different fractions in the same concentrations as above. The tested... |

Drusas e cristais prismáticos ocorrem no mesofilo dorsiventral. No mesocarpo... |

Extracts from the dried pericarp of Sapindus saponaria L. (Sapindaceae) fruits were investigated for their antifungal activity against clinical isolates of yeasts Candida albicans and C. non-albicans from vaginal secretions of women with Vulvovaginal Candidiasis. Four clinical isolates of C. albicans, a single clinical isolated of each of the species C. parapsilosis, C. glabrata, C. tropicalis, and the strain of C. albicans ATCC 90028 were used. The hydroalcoholic extract was bioactivity-directed against a clinical isolate of C. parapsilosis, and showed strong activity. The n-BuOH extract and one fraction showed strong activity against all isolates tested. Further column-chromatography on silica gel separation of this fraction afforded two pure triterpene... |

The use of cover crops can reduce or even eliminate the use of nitrogenous fertilizers, contributing to a more sustainable agriculture and ensuring the conservation of natural resources. Thus, the aim of this research was to evaluate the use of cover crops to improve the biomass yield of Serjania marginata plants. The experiment was carried out at the Federal University of Grande Dourados, in Dourados-MS, from December 2009 to February 2011. A split plot design was used in a randomized block design with four replications, being evaluated in plots three species of tropical legumes (Stizolobium aterrimum, Crotalaria spectabilis and Canavalia ensiformes, and one control plot (without cover crops), and in subplots the addition or not of nitrogen (N) (at 150... |

Trees, shrubs or lianas, rarely herbaceous climbers; monoecious, rarely dioecious or polygamous. Indumentum usually of solitary, simple hairs, sometimes also of two-branched hairs, stellate bundles of hairs, or scale hairs (then young parts, buds, and inflorescences viscid). Leaves spirally arranged, rarely opposite or whorled, simple, biternate, digitate or (bi)pinnate; true stipules usually absent, pseudo-stipules sometimes present. Leaflets alternate to opposite, symmetric to distinctly asymmetric, entire or dentate to serrate or crenate. Inflorescences axillary, often together pseudoterminal, terminal or ramiflorous, thyrsoid, with or without branches; bracts and bracteoles present. Flowers usually unisexual, rarely bisexual, actinomorphic or... |

Fruits of five regional selections of rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum L.) were characterized to identify those with international marketing quality to promote their propagation in Mexico, improvement and conservation in germoplasm bank. The fruits were harvested in June, July, and August 2008 and, after each harvest, were assessed for shape (length/diameter), firmness, fruit weight, number of fruits per kilogram, weight and percentage of pericarp, seed and aril, total soluble solids, total sugars, vitamin C content, pH, and titratable acidity. In addition, a sensorial evaluation was carried out with 31 panelists who graded each selection for color, sweetness, and acidity. Fruits of five selections were ovoid, and with the following characteristics: firmness... |
