Anterior caudal transverse processes in sauropod dinosaurs: morphological, phylogenetic and functional aspects 41
Gallina,Pablo Ariel; Otero,Alejandro.
A great amount of the sauropod record is based on caudal vertebrae. Morphological analyses of tail bones until recently were essentially focused on centrum shape, with other anatomical features being poorly studied. A detailed description of anterior caudal transverse processes (ACTP) is presented here in order to improve the scarce knowledge of this tail part. Within Sauropoda there are four different ACTP morphological types; one simple (single element projected on the vertebral side) and three complex (lateral bony laminar plates supported by bony bars). The identity of the ACTP elements includes a rib, a synapophysis and laminar components, which are renamed here. The ventral laminae include the anterior centroparapophyseal lamina (acpl) and the...

Filippi,Leonardo S.; Garrido,Alberto C..

Baalsaurus mansillai gen. et sp. nov. a new titanosaurian sauropod (Late Cretaceous) from Neuquén, Patagonia, Argentina 42
CALVO,JORGE O.; RIGA,BERNARDO GONZALEZ.
Abstract We describe a dentary of a new titanosaur sauropod, Baalsaurus mansillai, gen. et sp. nov. from the Late Cretaceous of Patagonia, Argentina. The material comes from the Portezuelo Formation, Neuquén Group. Titanosaur sauropods lower jaws are scarce and only nine taxa with dentaries have been described. There are two types of morphology in titanosaur dentaries; “L” shaped or “U” shaped based on the shape, without a phylogenetic issue. In this paper; we recognize a new taxa, Baalsaurus mansillai, represented by an “L” shaped dentary with three apomorphic characters that are not present in other taxa: dentary alveoli with 10 teeth in the anterior ramus, a ventrally and anteriorly inclined symphysis and a wide ventral Meckelian groove surrounded by a...

Notes on the axial skeleton of the titanosaur Bonitasaura salgadoi (Dinosauria-Sauropoda) 42
Gallina,Pablo A..
Sauropod axial anatomy is particularly important in understanding morphological features and phylogenetic analyses. Spatial arrangement of zygapophyses and rib articulations, as well as their complex laminar development, help to recognize the relative position of isolated vertebral elements. The presence of anterior, mid and posterior elements along the cervical, dorsal and caudal series in Bonitasaura salgadoi allows the analysis of several anatomical characteristics. These include the pattern of neurocentral closure with unfused, partially fused and completely fused elements in a peculiar temporal sequence, as well as several neural spine modifications and the laminar arrangement. The variations in neural spine morphology include a lateral expansion of...

Angolatitan adamastor, a new sauropod dinosaur and the first record from Angola 42
Mateus,Octávio; Jacobs,Louis L.; Schulp,Anne S.; Polcyn,Michael J.; Tavares,Tatiana S.; Buta Neto,André; Morais,Maria Luísa; Antunes,Miguel T..
A forelimb of a new sauropod dinosaur (Angolatitan adamastor n. gen. et sp.) from the Late Turonian of Iembe (Bengo Province) represents the first dinosaur discovery in Angola, and is one of the few occurrences of sauropod dinosaurs in sub-Saharan Africa collected with good chronological controls. The marginal marine sediments yielding the specimen are reported to be late Turonian in age and, thus it represents a non-titanosaurian sauropod in sub-Saharan Africa at a time taken to be dominated by titanosaurian forms. Moreover, Angolatitan adamastor is the only basal Somphospondyli known in the Late Cretaceous which implies in the existence of relict forms in Africa.

Speeds and stance of titanosaur sauropods: analysis of Titanopodus tracks from the Late Cretaceous of Mendoza, Argentina 42
González Riga,Bernardo J..
Speed estimations from trackways of Titanopodus mendozensis González Riga and Calvo provide information about the locomotion of titanosaurian sauropods that lived in South America during the Late Cretaceous. Titanopodus ichnites were found at Agua del Choique, a newly discovered track site in the Loncoche Formation, Late Campanian-Early Maastrichtian of Mendoza, Argentina. This speed study follows the hypothesis of dynamic similarity proposed by Alexander. As a refinement of this method, a complementary equation is presented here based on an articulated titanosaurian specimen collected in strata that are regarded as correlative to those that have yielded Titanopodus tracks (Allen Formation, Neuquén Basin). This analysis indicates that hip height can be...
