Fusarium Head Blight (FHB), commonly known as scab, has been a severe problem for wheat and barley producers since 1993. This study provides an update of economic losses suffered by wheat and barley producers in scab-affected regions in the United States. Emphasis is placed on estimating direct and secondary economic impacts of yield and price losses suffered by wheat and barley producers from 1993 to 2001. Nine states are included in the analysis for three wheat classes. Three of the nine states were also used for the analysis of malting and feed barley. COST-BENEFIT AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF FUNGICIDES FOR SUPPRESSION OF FUSARIUM HEAD BLIGHT (SCAB) IN HARD RED SPRING WHEAT IN 1997 31

A cost-benefit and statistical analysis of fungicides for suppression of fusarium head blight (scab) in hard red spring wheat was completed on data from physical experiments done in Fargo and Carrington, North Dakota in 1997. Various fungicide data were analyzed by applying revenues and costs to the experiment yields to determine net revenue. The net revenues were analyzed statistically using a one-way ANOVA (analysis of variance). No statistical difference was found between the control and other treatment with the Fargo data. There was a statistical difference between the control and other treatments with the Carrington data. The data sets were combined and analyzed; location proved to be a significant factor.

Fusarium Head Blight (FHB), commonly known as scab, has been a severe problem for wheat producers in recent years. This study estimates the economic value of crop losses suffered by wheat producers in the 1990s. Nine states and three wheat classes are included in the analysis, which considers the effects of scab on both production and average prices received. The cumulative value of losses (1991-97) in scab-affected regions is estimated at $1.3 billion. Two states, North Dakota and Minnesota, account for over two-thirds of these dollar losses.

Production of mycotoxins by Fusarium graminearum isolated from small cereals (wheat, triticale and barley) affected with scab disease in Southern Brazil 58

Fusarium fungi are known to be pathogenic for plants and mycotoxin producers. The in vitro production of deoxynivalenol and zearalenone was qualitatively evaluated in 24 different isolates of Fusarium graminearum collected from small cereals associated with the scab disease, in southern Brazil. Isolates were cultivated in rice during 14 days at 28ºC. Cultivates were extracted with methanol:water (40:60 v/v) and analyzed by thin layer chromatography. Other trichothecenes (diacetoxyscirpenol, fusarenon-X, neosolaniol and nivalenol) and zearalenol, often produced by Fusarium, were also analyzed.
