Manual of Fish Sclerochronology ArchiMer
Panfili, Jacques; De Pontual, Helene; Troadec, Herve; Wrigh, Peter J..
Sclerochronology, the study of calcified structures to reconstruct the past history of living organisms, is central to fish biology and fisheries management. This manual aims to provide an overview of the current theoretical and practical aspects of sclerochronological studies. By providing information on the nature of calcified structures (otoliths, scales, skeleton), their uses in fish research and methods for preparation and examination, the manual constitutes a comprehensive guide for researchers, technicians and students either new to the field or interested in expanding their range of expertise. The enclosed multimedia version (DVD) is supplemented by videos illustrating the main technical procedures with an alternative navigation mode based on...

Les Sars Deplodus sargus (Linne 1758) du Golfe du Lion: croissance et caracteristiques des debarquements aux criees de Sete et du Grau-du-Roi. ArchiMer
Man-wai, Rabenevanana; Quignard, Jean-pierre.
Age and growth of seabream D. sargus in the Gulf of Lions (Mediterranean Sea) were examined using scale reading. Growth was expressed by the von Bertalanffy's equation based on the estimation of total lengths at the time of annual ring formation. The growth in weight and the length-weight relationship were calculated for both sexes separately and combined during and after spawning periods. Preliminary investigations on the characteristics of commercial catches (from Sete and Grau-du-Roi commercial fishing grounds) were also carried out.

Validation of length frequency analysis for boops boops (bogue) growth estimation OceanDocs
El-Haweet, A.; Hegazy, M.; Abu-Hatab, H.; Sabry, E..
Scales reading and length frequency distribution were used for age determination and growth estimation of Boops boops (Bogue) stock of Western Mediterranean Coast of Egypt. Age determination using scale was done and the time of annulus formation was detected by the marginal increment index. Bhattacharya’s method was used for length frequency analysis. Both methods showed 6 age groups. ANOVA test revealed insignificant differences between both estimates of length at age results. Growth parameters estimated using length-at-age data from both methods confirming the age determination results. Growth performance index indicated high similarity between the two estimates. The results revealed the compatibility of length frequency distribution to scale reading for...

Age et croissance de Pagellus bellottii (Sparidae) des cotes Mauritaniennes OceanDocs
Ould Yarba, L.; Ghorbel, M.; Bouain, A..
The red Pandora Pagellus bellottii is one of the most important demersal species in the fisheries of Mauritanian coasts. Several gears and fleet traditionally exploit it. The studies concerning this fish and particularly those of its age and growth are rare and haven't used the adequate method, which uses hard pieces like scale and vertebra. The objective of the present work is to contribute to the knowledge of the growth parameters of the red Pandora using the scales method not yet used in the studied area. To determine the age and to study the growth of Pagellus bellottii in Mauritanian coasts, we have used the scales of 544 individuals. We have taken, 8 scales under the fin pectoral and we have read the age using a binocular magnifying glass provided...

El dorado, Salminus maxillosus (Pisces, Characiformes)en el Río de la Plata y Río Uruguay inferior OceanDocs
Sverlij, S.B.; Espinach Ros, A..
Catch per unit effort (CPUE), lenght distribution, age, growth, reproduction, migrations and feeding were studies through samples collected with longlines and a gang of gill-nets of several mesh size. CPUE data showed a progressive decrease of the relative abundance in the Río de la Plata, during the study period. Age was studied from scales. Back-calculations of growth revealed the pressence of Lee's phenomenon. Means lenghts at age were greater in females. No significant difference was found in lenght-weight regressions from both sexes and sampling areas. Only young individuals from 1 to 6 years were caught. None of the fish studied had ripening gonads. Extensive migrations were recorded both in the Paraná and Uruguay rivers. Stomach contents analysis...
