La variabilité des tailles individuelles à l'intérieur des cohortes et des bancs de poissons I : Observations et interprétation ArchiMer
Freon, Pierre.
Body length variability bas been studied in fish schools and eohorts of two tropical pelagie species. The data, and simulations associated with them allow the variations in standard deviation of cohorts to be followed, and hypotheses on spawning duration or population structure ean thus be tested. As the fish grow, the variability increases more rapidly in young eohorts than in schools with the same mean length. For older fish, the inverse phenomenon is observed: while the standard deviation of individual lengths deereases in a cohort as it gets older, this parameter continued to inerease in sehools as the mean length increases. This shows that schools of young fish eannot be eonsidered as representative of the cohort length frequency distribution, whereas...

AN OVERVIEW OF IMMIGRATION AND THE CHANGING FACE OF RURAL CALIFORNIA: THE CENTRAL SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY AgEcon
Huffman, Wallace E..
This paper examines the aggregate performance of California agriculture relative to Florida and U.S. agriculture, 1960-1993, the economics of the California raisin grape industry which uses large quantities of migratory labor for the grape harvest, and schools and schooling of farm workers'’ children in the Parlier area. The major conclusions are that the labor intensity of California (and Florida) agriculture has fallen much less than for the whole U.S., the raisin grape industry of the Central San Joaquin Valley is struggling due to labor availability and prospects of greater foreign competition, and schooling is one of the most promising routes to a better life for the children of adult farm workers.

Does Limited Access at School Result in Compensation at Home? The Effect of Soft Drink Bans in Schools on Purchase Patterns Outside of Schools AgEcon
Huang, Rui; Kristin, Kiesel.
This paper investigates the effects of banning soft drinks in schools on purchases outside of school. We utilize unique household-level and store-level data sources in combination with time-series and cross-sectional variation of state-level regulations in a difference-in-differences (DD) approach. We detect a decrease in the overall trend in sales, but observe this downward trend in households with and without children, as well as in states with and without regulation. Controlling for advertising allows us to further reject that leading brands intensify their advertising efforts and target children to potentially offset their reduced presence at schools. Finally, we find no evidence of substitution effects among possible beverage product alternatives. Our...

Cardumes da sardinha-verdadeira, Sardinella brasiliensis (Steindachner), em águas costeiras do estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Zoologia
Paiva,Melquíades Pinto; Motta,Paulo César Silva da.
This paper deals with the occurrence and schol sizes of the Brazilian-sardine, Sardinella brasiliensis (Steindachner, 1879), in coastal waters of" Rio de Janeiro State (Brazil), during the years 1993-1997. The schools are more frequent and heavier in bay and surroundings of Grande Island; another area, with lesser importance, remains between the Cape of São Tome and surroundings of Cabo Frio, under influence of coastal upwelling. The heavier schools are found in April-June (autumn), soon after lhe reproduction period. The schools swim in surface waters with until 80 meters in depth. but more than 98% of them are restricted to waters until 50 meters; about 41% of schools are found in places of 10 - 20 meters, with clear reduction of their frequencies in...
