Improvements in the larviculture of turbot <i>Scophthalmus maximus</i>: zootechnical and nutritional aspects, possibility for disease control OMA
Dhert, Ph.; Lavens, P.; Dehasque, M.; Sorgeloos, P..
The rotifer feeding regime for larval turbot could be improved by more regular feeding and adjusted food distributions as to prevent overfeeding and digestion problems. All tests were successfully run in clear-water conditions indicating that the administration of algae is not essential during the rotifer stage. Larval requirements with respect to (n-3) RUFA, and more specifically DRA and DRA/EPA ratio appeared to change according to the age of the larvae and the physiological condition at the different larval stages. As early as the first week the stress resistance of the larvae could be improved by feeding rotifers specifically enriched in DRA. However, the continuous feeding of these live preys did not result in the best larval output, indicating that...

Relationship between dietary phospholipid classes and neutral lipid absorption in newly-weaned turbot, <i>Scophthalmus maximus</i> OMA
Geurden, I.; Bergot, P.; Schwarz, L.; Sorgeloos, P..
A 28-day feeding trial was conducted for comparing the effect of different dietary phospholipid (PL) classes on the growth of post-larval turbot and on the incorporation of dietary neutral lipid fatty acids into their body lipids. Prior to the experiment the turbot were weaned for one week on a PL-free diet. The nine experimental diets were isolipidic and contained an equal amount of highly unsaturated fatty acids in the form of ethyl esters. They differed by their PL content (0.1 or 2%) and by the PL class composition of the added soybean PL fractions. Compared to the PL-free diet, diets enriched with phosphatidylcholine (PC) resulted in a better growth, a higher triglyceride content (% body dry matter) and increased levels of docosahexaenoic acid (%...

Relationship between egg quality and fatty acid content of various turbot broodstocks (<i>Scophthalmus maximus</i> L.) OMA
Peleteiro, J.B.; Lavens, P.; Rodríguez-Ojeja, G.; Iglesias, J..
The paper presents the data relating to the spawning quality of 20 turbot females (<i>Scophthalmus maximus</i>L.) subjected to natural and controlled photoperiods and fed with two different types of food. A comparison is made between the data usually utilized in hatcheries for defining the spawning quality (number of viable eggs, fertilization and hatching rates, number of larvae produced) and the highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) content of fertilized eggs at the two-cell stage. The results indicate that there is no correlation between the HUFA content of the eggs and any of the egg quality criteria examined. Nevertheless, significant differences (p<0,05) are found between the females fed with fresh trash fish (higher 18:3n-3, 20:4n-6,...

Mode of infection and spread of <i>Vibrio anguillarum</i> in turbot <i>Scophthalmus maximus</i> larvae after oral challenge through life feed OMA
Grisez, L.; Chair, M.; Sorgeloos, P.; Ollevier, F.P..
The infection route of the marine fish pathogen <i>Vibrio anguillarum</i> was studied after oral challenge of the juvenile turbot <i>Scophthalmus maximus</i> L. through a life feed. <i>Artemia</i> nauplii were incubated in a suspension of <i>V. anguillarum</i> cells, and subsequently fed twice to the fish. All challenged fish died within 4d after the first challenge, while no mortality occurred in the non-challenged controls. The results of an immunohistochemical examination of the sectioned fish samples clearly demonstrated that <i>V. anguillarum</i> cells were ingested by the <i>Artemia</i> and that the latter were ingested by the fish. Bacteria were released from the...

Live food mediated drug delivery as a tool for disease treatment in larviculture: a case study with turbot <i>Scophthalmus maximus</i> OMA
Chair, M.; Dehasque, M.; Sorgeloos, P.; Nelis, H.; De Leenheer, A.P..
With the advent of intensive culture practices, occurrences of mass mortality caused by bacterial infections are commonplace. High doses of antibiotics or antibacterials are used in aquaculture by adding them to the water. Problems of palatability and leaching occur when the chemotherapeutic agents are incorporated in feeds. To circumvent these problems <i>Artemia</i> can be used as a carrier. In this study we assess the efficacy of cotrimoxazole in the oral treatment of turbot larvae challenged with a pathogenic strain of Vibrio anguillarum encapsulated in <i>Artemia</i>.
