SALT TOLERANT PLANTS AS A VALUABLE RESOURCE FOR SUSTAINABLE FOOD PRODUCTION IN ARID AND SALINE COASTAL ZONES Acta biol.Colomb.
HOLGUIN PEÑA,Ramón Jaime; MEDINA HERNÁNDEZ,Diana; GHASEMI,Mojtaba; RUEDA PUENTE,Edgar Omar.
ABSTRACT This review focuses on the potential of halophytes for food, fodder and biofuels production, as well as their impacts on the environment and societies. Moreover, to open new areas in production systems using novel technologies such as halophytes in a desert agriculture. We are faced with the crisis and the shortage of freshwater in arid, semi-arid and desert regions. For this reason, we have to apply sustainable systems for human food, fodder and biofuels. Halophytes are naturally resistant to salt and develop on the coastal coast and arid-saline areas. We present a complete summary of the current situation of human population growth and food demand, a sustainable alternative such as halophilic crops of agro-industrial importance compared with...

ALLEVIATION OF SALINITY STRESS ON Vicia faba L. PLANTS VIA SEED PRIMING WITH MELATONIN Acta biol.Colomb.
DAWOOD,Mona Gergis; EL-AWADI,Mohamed E.
Melatonin is an environmentally friendly-molecule with a potent free radical scavenger and antioxidant capacity. Two pot experiments were conducted during two successive winter seasons (2011/2012 and 2012/2013) at the wire-house of the National Research Centre, Dokki, Cairo, Egypt to study the potentiality of melatonin (100 mM and 500 mM) in alleviating the harmful effect of diluted seawater at a relatively low and high concentrations (3.85 dS/m and 7.69 dS/m, respectively) on the performance of faba bean plants. The results revealed that irrigation of faba bean plants with diluted seawater reduced growth parameters (plant height, leaves number/plant, fresh and dry weights of plant), relative water content (RWC), photosynthetic pigments (chlorophylls a, b...

Sanitary quality of sands from marine recreational beaches of São Paulo, Brazil BJM
Sato,Maria Inês Zanoli; Di Bari,Marisa; Lamparelli,Claudia Condé; Truzzi,Ana Cristina; Coelho,Maria Cristina L.S.; Hachich,Elayse Maria.
A sanitary evaluation of sand and water from 16 beaches of São Paulo State, Brazil, was undertaken during spring of 1997 and summer of 1998. Ninety six samples each of wet and dry sand and seawater were collected and analysed for fecal indicator bacteria. A parasitological examination and Candida albicans analysis were also performed in sand samples and F-specific bacteriophages were determined in seawater. Statistical analysis of the results demonstrated higher concentrations of fecal coliforms and fecal streptococci in dry sand during summer. Correlation analysis indicated a significant relationship between fecal indicator densities in wet sand and seawater. There was a significant correlation between the densities of fecal coliforms and fecal...

Nutritional and functional characterization of wild and cultivated Sarcocornia neei grown in Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Riquelme,Javiera; Olaeta,José Antonio; Gálvez,Lena; Undurraga,Pedro; Fuentealba,Claudia; Osses,Andrea; Orellana,Jaime; Gallardo,José; Pedreschi,Romina.
Sarcocornia neei is a halophyte that grows on the coast of the Valparaiso Region of Chile. Studies related to its nutritional and functional value under wild and cultivated conditions are not available. Thus, in this study, a nutritional (complete proximal, mineral and dietary fiber analysis) and functional characterization (total phenolics, β-carotene, hydrophilic and lipophilic antioxidant activity (HAA and LAA) and ascorbic acid) were performed for wild and cultivated plants. Wild plants displayed higher amounts of compounds involved in stress defense mechanisms such as total phenolics, proteins, dietary fiber and ash. The mineral analysis revealed that Na+ and Cl- are the main ions accumulated in wild and cultivated Sarcocornia neei that are...

Fatigue Behaviour of Acrylic Matrix Composites: Influence of Seawater ArchiMer
Davies, Peter; Arhant, Mael.
The recent introduction of liquid acrylic thermoplastic matrix resins which can impregnate fibre reinforcements using traditional infusion moulding offers significant potential for future composite structures in marine applications, such as marine energy devices. However, to date very few results are available to evaluate the long term durability of these composites in a marine environment. This paper describes results from a series of cyclic loading tests on glass and carbon fibre reinforced acrylic composites under both tension and four point flexural loading. Tests were performed before and after aging in natural seawater. The results were compared to results for a glass/epoxy used today in marine structures, and show a lower loss of both static and...

Long-term effects of moderate elevation of oxidation–reduction potential on European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in recirculating aquaculture systems ArchiMer
Li, Xian; Przybyla, Cyrille; Triplet, Sebastien; Liu, Ying; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
The long term effects of moderate elevation ORP (oxidation–reduction potential) around 300–320 mV on the growth, hematological parameters and the ability of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) to react against bacterial infection was studied in recirculating aquaculture systems (RASs). Two RASs, one with a moderate ozonation (RAS-O3) and a control (RAS-C) were used in this experiment. After 60 days, seabass reared in the RAS-O3 were more able to react against a Vibrio anguillarum infection. It was in spite of the fact that seabass in the RAS-O3 showed decreased feed intake, feed conversion rate, growth rate and modified hematological parameters compared with the fish in RAS-C. It is obvious that an ORP level of 300–320 mV is too high for seabass to...

C18 Sep-Pak extractable dissolved organic copper related to hydrochemistry in the North-West Mediterranean ArchiMer
El Sayed, Mohamed A.; Aminot, Alain.
Extractable organic copper using C18 Sep-Pak cartridges was investigated in seawater after laboratory experiment showed that the (C18 Sep-Pak) cartridges were reliable, in open and coastal waters with normal levels of dissolved organic carbon, for the separation of a specific fraction of organo-copper complexes.Given that the Sep-Pak cartridges retain the hydrophobic fraction of the dissolved organic matter, this extraction technique was applied for studying the characteristics of this particular hydrophobic dissolved organic copper fraction (hDOCu) in the north-western Mediterranean waters. Surface distribution of hDOC is influenced by organic matter input from the river Rhone and its estuary as well as the physical processes affecting the primary...

Development of a mreB-targeted real-time PCR method for the quantitative detection of Vibrio harveyi in seawater and biofilm from aquaculture systems ArchiMer
Mougin, Julia; Roquigny, Roxane; Travers, Marie-agnes; Grard, Thierry; Bonnin-jusserand, Maryse; Le Bris, Cédric.
Vibrio harveyi is a particularly problematic Gram-negative bacterium because it can form biofilms on aquaculture facility surfaces, leading to resistance of bacteria against antibiotics and water sanitizers. A SYBR Green I quantitative real-time PCR method was developed to detect V. harveyi directly from environmental samples, including seawater and biofilm. Specific primers targeting the mreB gene were designed. The exclusivity and inclusivity of the newly designed primers were evaluated using a panel of 85 bacteria: 58 V. harveyi from multiples origins and 27 non-V. harveyi isolates, and compared with two pairs of primers targeting the topA and toxR genes that were designed previously. All sets of primers were able to distinguish V. harveyi from closely...

Air-sea CO2 flux variability in frontal regions of the Southern Ocean from CARbon Interface OCean Atmosphere drifters ArchiMer
Boutin, Jacqueline; Merlivat, L.; Henocq, C.; Martin, Nicolas; Sallee, Jean-baptiste.
Nine CARbon Interface OCean Atmosphere (CARIOCA) drifters were deployed in the Southern Ocean (south of the subtropical front, STF) between 2001 and 2006. They recorded 65 months of measurements in all seasons between 57 degrees S and 40 degrees S. Hydrological fronts detected by altimetry indicate that one buoy explored the polar zone (PZ) of the Atlantic Ocean and the western Indian Ocean; the remaining buoys explored the northern and southern parts of the subantarctic zone (SAZ) from the mid-Indian Ocean (73 degrees E) to the eastern Pacific Ocean (112 degrees W). The air-sea CO2 fluxes along the buoy trajectories are primarily driven by the spatial variability of the fugacity of CO2 in seawater, fCO(2): in the SAZ, they vary between -1.1 and -4.2 mol...

Seawater accelerated ageing of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate ArchiMer
Deroine, Morgan; Le Duigou, Antoine; Corre, Yves-marie; Le Gac, Pierre-yves; Davies, Peter; Cesar, Guy; Bruzaud, Stephane.
The aim of this study is to establish a baseline for poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) lifetime prediction in a marine environment, by means of mechanical and physico-chemical characterization of specimens immersed in continuously renewed and filtered natural seawater in the laboratory at different temperatures (4, 25 and 40°C). Samples were also aged at sea in Lorient harbour in order to compare laboratory and natural degradation mechanisms and kinetics. Due to its morphology, hydrolysis of PHBV in natural seawater is quite slow, and samples were observed to undergo preferentially an enzymatic surface degradation. Increasing the aging temperature in the laboratory promotes the water uptake and causes hydrolysis. As two degradation...

Réaction de réduction de l'oxygène sur les aciers inoxydables en eau de mer naturelle. Influence du biofilm sur les processus de corrosion ArchiMer
Le Bozec, Nathalie.
iofilm development on stainless steels immersed in natural seawater can have prejudicial consequences on the resistance of these materials to corrosion . The goal of the present study was to get more precise information on the corrosion processes, and especially on the oxygen reduction reaction. As the reaction is linked to the stainless steel surface state, the characterisation of the oxides films (composition, structure, thickness...) is essential to understand the mechanisms and the oxygen reduction kinetic. The first aim of the study has been to correlate the oxygen reduction processes with the characteristics of the oxides layer as a function of the alloy surface treatment (mechanical polishing, electrochemical passivation and prereduction, chemical...

Multi-Element Determination of Trace Elements in Natural Water Reference Materials by ICP-SFMS after Tm Addition and Iron Co-precipitation ArchiMer
Bayon, Germain; Birot, Dominique; Bollinger, Claire; Barrat, Jean Alix.
We report on an improved method for determining trace element abundances in seawater and other natural waters. The analytical procedure involves co-precipitation on iron hydroxides after addition of a Tm spike, and measurement by inductively coupled plasma-sector field mass spectrometry (ICP-SFMS). The validity of the method was assessed through a series of co-precipitation experiments, using ultra-diluted solutions of a certified rock reference material (BIR-1). Results obtained for four natural water reference materials (NASS-5, CASS-4, SLEW-3, SLRS-4) are in agreement with published working values for rare earth elements, yttrium, vanadium and, when available, for hafnium, zirconium, thorium and scandium. A set of proposed values with uncertainties...

Consequences of radioactive releases into the sea resulting from the accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant - Evolution of expert investigation according to the data available ArchiMer
Laguionie, Philippe; Bailly-du-bois, Pascal; Boust, D.; Fievet, B.; Garreau, Pierre; Connan, O.; Charmasson, Sabine; Arnaud, M.; Duffa, Celine; Champion, D..
The accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) in March 2011 led to an unprecedented direct input of artificial radioactivity into the marine environment. The Institute for Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety was requested by the French authorities to investigate the radioecological impact of this input, in particular the potential contamination of products of marine origin used for human consumption. This article describes the close link between the responses provided and the availability of the data, as well as their nature and ability to meet the requirements of expert investigation. These responses were needed: (i) to evaluate the inputs of radionuclides into the marine environment, (ii) to understand their dispersion in seawater,...

Polychloroprene behaviour in a marine environment: Role of silica fillers ArchiMer
Tchalla, Siwavi Tatiana; Le Gac, Pierre-yves; Maurin, R.; Creac'Hcadec, R..
Polychloroprene rubbers are widely used in marine structures and often filled with silica in order to increase mechanical properties. The presence of silica fillers leads to a complex degradation of the material. This study aims to understand the deeper degradation mechanisms involved when a silica filled polychloroprene is used in sea water. To do so, 4 polychloroprene rubbers filled with different amounts of silica (from 0 to 45 phr) were aged in natural sea water for 6 months at temperatures ranging from 25 to 60 °C. Moreover, a natural rubber with similar formulation was also considered in order to evaluate the role of the chlorine atom in the degradation. . The chemistry and mechanics of the rubber degradation were also studied. In the presence of...

An automated photo-oxidation method for the determination of dissolved organic phosphorus in marine and fresh water ArchiMer
Aminot, Alain; Kerouel, Roger.
A segmented flow automated method with on-line photo-oxidation for the determination of dissolved organic phosphorus + soluble reactive phosphorus (DOP + SRP) in seawater and fresh water is described here. A low-power lamp was used for a compact, easy-to-handle and low-ozone-producing manifold. The influence of seawater matrix components was studied in detail using natural seawater and salt solutions spiked with DOP model compounds. Bromide was found to be the most inhibitory species in seawater. The work shows that most salt solutions referred to as artificial seawater are not satisfactory model matrices to test the actual seawater matrix effect. Since DOP recovered in undiluted seawater samples was about half that obtained in fresh water samples, the...

Detection of ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) DNA in seawater by PCR: influence of water parameters in bioassays ArchiMer
Vigneron, Vassilia; Solliec, Gaelle; Montanie, Hélène; Renault, Tristan.
Since 1991, herpesvirus infections have been reported among larvae and juveniles of various bivalves. Most of the studies focused on detection of viral infections of economically important species. However, the persistence of bivalve herpesviruses; in the marine environment is poorly documented. The present study concerns the role of seawater parameters in Ostreid Herpesvirus I (OsHV-1) detection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Viral DNA extracted from purified particles or virions present in infected oyster larvae were detected by PCR after storage in different media at different temperatures. The lowest detection threshold was found using distilled water or Tris EDTA buffer. In seawater, the threshold was higher. The use of sterile media permitted...

Sulfide determination in hydrothermal seawater samples using a vibrating gold micro-wire electrode in conjunction with stripping chronopotentiometry ArchiMer
Aumond, Virginie; Waeles, Mathieu; Salaun, Pascal; Gibbon-walsh, Kristoff; Van Den Berg, Constant M. G.; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Riso, Ricardo D..
A rapid electrochemical stripping chronopotentiometric procedure to determined sulfide in unaltered hydrothermal seawater samples is presented. Sulfide is deposited at -0.25 V (vs Ag/AgCl, KCl 3 M) at a vibrating gold microwire and then stripped through the application of a reductive constant current (typically -2 mu A). The hydrodynamic conditions are modulated by vibration allowing a short deposition step, which is shown here to be necessary to minimize H2S volatilization. The limit of detection (LOD) is 30 nM after a deposition step of 7s. This LOD is in the same range as the most sensitive cathodic voltammetric technique using a mercury drop electrode and is well below those reported previously for other electrodes capable of being implemented in situ....
