The study evaluated the effect of oral administration of sulfated polysaccharides (SP) extracted from the marine macroalga Kappaphycus alvarezii on survival and weight gain of Nile tilapia post larvae during sex reversal in a stress situation. SP were extracted from the seaweed by enzymatic digestion and incorporated into the diet before the addition of the hormone 17-α-methyltestosterone, and administered at the doses of 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 mg g-1 of body weight and a control (without SP), for 28 days. In the last week of sex reversal a stress situation was established by removing the aeration and water renewal. Survival and weight gains data were subjected to a variance analysis (ANOVA) and Tukey's test for averages differentiation at significance levels...

Weed Management, Folic Acid and Seaweed Extract Effects on Faba Bean Plants and Associated Weeds under Sandy Soil Conditions CIGR Journal
Dawood, Mona Gergis.
Two field experiments were conducted during the winter seasons of 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 at the agricultural experimental station of the National Research Centre, Nubaria, Egypt. Field evaluation of the efficiency of weed-control treatments (unweeded, oxadiargyl, metribuzin and two hand hoeing) and  bio-stimulants levels (folic acid at the rate of 10, 20 and 30 mg/L, and seaweed extract 100, 200 and 300 mg/L) and their interactive effects on faba bean growth, yield, yield attributes and chemical composition of seeds. Two hand hoeing achieved the highest weed depression expressed in the lowest dry matter of broadleaved, narrow-leaved and total weeds. Also, two hand hoeing was the most superior treatment in increasing plant height, shoot dry weight, leaf...

Galactans: an overview of their most important sourcing and applications as natural polysaccharides BABT
Delattre,Cedric; Fenoradosoa,Taratra Andrée; Michaud,Philippe.
Since last decades, lot of biological and rheological properties of polysaccharides and oligosaccharides were described. Among them, galactans and more especially sulfated galactans from seaweeds have shown interesting and specific properties not only as texturing agents but also as biological active compounds on several organisms. This class of polysaccharides includes classical sulfated galactans extracted from seaweeds and classified as agar and carrageenans. However, some galactans are more complex and their specific structural features have been characterized after their extraction from terrestrial plants, seaweeds but also animals and microoragnisms. This review catalogues the origins, structural characteristics and potentialities of these...

Chemotaxis and chemical defenses in seaweed susceptibility to herbivory BJB
PEREIRA,R. C.; DONATO,R.; TEIXEIRA,V. L.; CAVALCANTI,D. N..
Recent studies have show that small marine herbivores with limited mobility (mesograzers) often feed on macroalgae chemically defended against fishes or sea-urchins. In order to verify the involved mechanisms of chemotaxis or chemical defense into this process in Brazilian littoral, two species of brown alga Dictyota menstrualis and Dictyota mertensii were studied against the limited mobility herbivores, the amphipod Parhyale hawaiensis and the crab Pachygrapsus transversus. These two species were studied in order to verify the action of their crude extracts in the defense and chemotaxis processes related to limited mobility of these herbivores. Feeding preference assays revealed that P. hawaiensis do not eaten these Dictyota species. P. transversus do not...

Nymphicidal and Ovipositional Efficacy of Seaweed Sargassum tenerrimum (J. Agardh) against Dysdercus cingulatus (Fab.) (Pyrrhocoridae) Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Sahayaraj,Kitherian; Jeeva,Y. Mary.
We investigated the role of a brown seaweed alga, Sargassum tenerrimum (J. Agardh), against Dysdercus cingulatus (Fab.), which is an economically important cotton pest in many parts of Asia. Sargassum tenerrimum has been used as a source of fertilizers and drugs, but there is no information available in the literature about its use in ecofriendly pest management. The impact of benzene (BN), chloroform (CH), and a mixture of benzene and chloroform (BNCH) extracts, as well as two chromatographic fractions of BNCH (FR1 and FR2) were investigated for their insecticidal and ovipositional properties against D. cingulatus. The BE extract showed the best insecticidal activity (LC50 = 0.009%), higher than BNCH (LC50 = 0.021%) and CH extracts (LC50 = 0.2481%), and...

Wszelaczyńska,Elżbieta; Szczepanek,Małgorzata; Pobereżny,Jarosław; Kazula,Maciej J.
ABSTRACT The nutritional value of carrot is determined by the content of total sugars and monosaccharides, carotenoids and vitamins, including vitamin C, in its roots. In 2009-2011, field experiments were carried out concerning the effect of biostimulating preparations applied during the carrot vegetation period on selected nutrients of its roots (total sugars, monosaccharides, carotenoids and vitamin C). Two biostimulants were foliarly applied in doses of 2 or 3 L ha-1 on various dates. Kelpak SL and Asahi SL: one, two or three applications; where, second and third applied at 2-week interval, additionally Kelpak SL: one application at 4-leaf phase, followed by additional application after 4 weeks. The field study was conducted in a randomized block design...

Technique de culture pour les cotes bretonnes de l'algue alimentaire Undaria pinnatifida. Tableau de marché - étude économique ArchiMer
Perez, René; Kaas, Raymond; Barbaroux, Olivier; Arbault, Suzanne; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Moigne, J.
Introduction Starting in 1986, the ANVAR contributed well appreciated financial support in order to set up an original seeding technique characterized by artificial seeding production in a laboratory. This advantageous new way of seeding, i.e. independency from nature, yield increase and true competitiveness compared to traditional methods, nevertheless requires strict adherence to a procedure progressively elaborated during numerous trials in laboratory as well as at sea. The program ended in July 1989 after testing the cultivation protocol on a 2 hectare exploitation scale, in order to better detect what could be improved to greatly increase productivity, facilitate the work of the harvester and to better adapt the operating mode to environmental...

Problèmes de santé publique liés à la consommation de fruits de mer ArchiMer
Lupo, Coralie; Angot, J.-l..
Seafood could be a solution to meet global food demand that will double by 2050. Seafood includes a wide variety of edible marine organisms, except fish and mammals. These are molluscs, crustaceans, echinoderms and algae. Like any food, seafood can involve hazards transmitted to humans through food, which affect the health of the consumer. These hazards are both biological (viruses, bacteria, parasites) and chemical (toxins, allergens, chemicals, microplastics). The exposure of populations to these hazards through seafood consumption can be notably explained by their mode of production and the dietary habits. Firstly, the sanitary quality of products reflects the quality of the aquatic environment from which they are taken, which can be contaminated by...

The present study focused on a brown macroalga (Halidrys siliquosa), with a particular emphasis on polyphenols and their associated biological activities. Two fractions were obtained by liquid/liquid purification from a crude hydroethanolic extract: (i) an ethyl acetate fraction and (ii) an aqueous fraction. Total phenolic contents and antioxidant activities of extract and both fractions were assessed by in vitro tests (Folin-Ciocalteu test, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, reducing power assay, superoxide anion scavenging assay, and beta-carotene-linoleic acid system). For the most active fraction, i.e., the ethyl acetate fraction, the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) value, antibacterial activities, and sunscreen...

L'algue japonaise Sargassum muticum (Yendo) fensholt. Caractéristiques et répartition ArchiMer
Loraine, Isabelle.
Sargassum muticum is a Japanese alga from the pheophycee class which has been introduced in Europe about fifteen years ago. It has greatly developed on account of its intrinsic characteristics (adaptation, growth speed, reproduction mode, etc...) and the favorable conditions it has encountered. The nuisance it generates can be very high but no efficient fighting solution has been found yet. Only mechanical means can be considered on a one off basis in areas where eradication is indispensable. Any development is faced with the problem of pick up costs. However the most interesting development for Sargassum muticum would be to utilize it as flocculent for suspended organic substances. Location updates for Sargassum muticum in France in 1989 did not show any...

Ultrasound-assisted extraction of R-phycoerythrin from Grateloupia turuturu with and without enzyme addition ArchiMer
Le Guillard, Cecile; Dumay, Justine; Donnay-moreno, Claire; Bruzac, Sandrine; Ragon, Jean-yves; Fleurence, Joel; Berge, Jean-pascal.
The aim of this study was to compare two processes for the extraction of R-phycoerythrin (R-PE) from the red seaweed Grateloupia turuturu: ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and ultrasound-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis (UAEH). Process efficiencies were both evaluated by the yield of R-PE extraction and by the level of liquefaction. Experiments were conducted at 40 and 22 °C, for 6 h, using an enzymatic cocktail and an original ultrasonic flow-through reactor. R-PE appeared very sensitive to temperature, thus 22 °C is strongly recommended for its extraction by UAEH or UAE. However, the higher processing temperature (40 °C) clearly increased the extraction of water-soluble compounds (up to 91% of liquefaction). These two new processes are thus promising...

Introduction During the month of April 1994, the "Ressources Halieutiques de l'Ifremer" laboratory (Ifremer Halieutic Resources) in Brest tested tools to be used for the harvesting of Laminaria hyperborea as requested by Système Bio-Industries. The first results of this trial campaign are as follows: The tools are effective as far as interspecific as well as intraspecific selectivity. Rightly so, Laminaria hyperborea accounts for nearly 100% of the harvest. We also noticed that only large size plants are harvested, commercial harvest is satisfactory in terms of yield. However insufficiencies still remain. Comb efficiency is low, since the actual harvest only represents 10 to 12% of the stipes collected when the machine goes through. This low efficiency...

Better off alone? Compared performance of monoclonal and polyclonal stands of a cultivated red alga growth ArchiMer
Usandizaga, Sara; Buschmann, Alejandro H.; Camus, Carolina; Kappes, José Luis; Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Mauger, Stéphane; Valero, Myriam; Guillemin, Marie Laure.
The objective of this study was to test, using a field experiment, the effect of genotypic diversity on productivity of farmed populations (Ancud and Chaica, Chile) of the domesticated red alga Agarophyton chilense (formerly known as Gracilaria chilensis), a species considered as economically important in Chile. Monoclonal and polyclonal (4 and 8 genotypes) subplots were outplanted into the mid intertidal in Metri Bay (Puerto Montt, Chile) during summer, a season in which A. chilense face higher temperatures (>18°C) and low nitrogen availability (<4.00 μmol). Ancud farm genotypes show higher growth rates in the monoclonal rather than the two polyclonal subplots. A similar tendency, yet not significant, was discernible in Chaica. In addition, whatever...

Aménagement des pêcheries côtières de Nord-Bretagne, algues-crustacés ArchiMer
Arzel, Pierre.
Today, the seaweed industry's main products are the alginates and carraghenanes. The industrial network faces many problems. However, it remains prosperous since it ranks fifth in the world for alginate production and third for caraghenanes'. This stability which seems safe on a middle term standpoint must not conceal the crisis which previously hit Fucus' exploitation. Rightly so, being harvested until approximately 1950 for soil amendment purposes, coastal kelp (i.e. Fucus), was replaced by chemical fertilizers. Brittany's production which was reaching 180 000 cubic metre in the twenties, close to 200 000 tons of fresh kelp, would have become non existent if it had not been converted into seaweed meal for livestock feed. The market demand was then...
