We evaluated the effects of split molybdenum (Mo) application at the reproductive stage of the common bean on seed Mo content (SMoC) and seed quality in two trials in the Zona da Mata region, Minas Gerais. Plants were sprayed with 100 or 600 g Mo ha-1 at the V4 stage. The higher dose was also split into 100(V4)+500(R5), 100(V4)+500(R7), 100(V4)+250(R5)+250(R7), and 100(V4)+150(R5)+350(R7). SMoC from plants sprayed with 600 g (five treatments) was 3.7- or 62-fold higher than those sprayed with 100 g, with seeds from the former treatments exhibiting slightly poorer quality. Application of 100 g at V4 + 500 g at the reproductive stage (four treatments) increased SMoC 1.6- or 2.7-fold compared with SMoC from plants sprayed with 600 g at V4. Split application... |

Application of bio-regulators improves the productivity of cash crops. Current experiment evaluates the effects of different doses of a bio-regulator on the seed quality of three onion cultivars (‘Baia Periforme’, ‘Bola Precoce’ and ‘Híbrida Superex’). Six doses of bio-regulator at 0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, 20.0 and 30.0 mL kg-1 were applied and results were compared to those of three controls. The experimental design was entirely randomized under the factorial arrangement 3 x 6 + 3, with four replications. Data were subjected to analysis of variance (p < 0.05), and all seed treatments were compared with controls by Dunnett’s test. The analysis of regression described the effects of the increasing doses of bio-regulator on germination and vigor responses... |

Ascobin had a promotion effect on growth and active constituents’ compounds of various plants under normal and stressed conditions. The physiological response of sunflower plant to foliar application of ascobin treatments (200,400,600 ppm) was investigated either under normal or salinity stressed conditions (5000 ppm NaCl solution) in pot experiments at the wire-house of the National Research Centre, Dokki, Cairo, Egypt. Data revealed that salinity stress caused significant decreases in shoot height, leaf area chlrorophyll b, carotenoids, total photosynthetic pigments, seed yield, yield components, oil and protein content of the yielded seeds relative to control. The decrease in oil percentage was more obvious by salinity than protein percentage. Since... |

The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of nitrogen fixing inoculum associated with Co + Mo leaf spray on the common bean grain yield and grain nutrients, cv. FT Nobre. Three dosages of the inoculant (0, 200 and 400 g/50 kg seeds), combined with four Co + Mo leaf spray levels (T0=0,0; T1=4.9,49; T2=7.3,73; and T3=9.7,97 g ha-1 of Co and Mo, respectively) were tested. The grain yield with the use of the inoculant (400 g / 5O kg seed-1) associated with the higher level of Co+Mo (T2 and T3) was very similar to the mineral nitrogen condition fertilizer recommended for the bean (70 kg ha-1 of N). With the increased inoculant dosage, an increase of the protein content and of P and Mg in the grain was also observed. The results indicated that... |

Seed coating is a process in which a thin and uniform polymer layer is deposited on the surface of a seed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the vigor of barley seed coated with a commercial polymer and various combinations of calcium, silicon and fungicide. In addition to a control with only the polymer coating, a total of 17 seed coating treatments were used in a completely randomized factorial design (18 treatments × 4 replicates per treatment). Calcium and silicon were applied at concentrations of 0, 25 or 50 g kg¹ of seed, and 0 or 3.0 mL of fungicide was applied. The means were compared using a Duncan test (P≤0.05). The results showed that a coating of polymer, fungicide, calcium and silicon did not affect the physiological... |

Avocado seeds present high size variability. Larger seeds, such those of the ‘Esther’ variety, are preferred when nurse seeds are used. Even though they are considered recalcitrant seeds, they are stored for propagation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the combined effect of three storage periods and three sizes of ‘Esther’ avocado seeds on vigor, in terms of electrolyte leakage, and seedling length and diameter. The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized factorial design. The factors were time in storage (10, 30 and 100 d at 5 °C and 80% relative humidity) and seed size (small, medium and large). Electrolyte leakage was evaluated as a measure of seed vigor, growth and later development of the... |

ABSTRACT: In Brazil, horseweed is one of the most important weeds because of the resistance to herbicides and high competitive for the crops. A large of losses were reported in major crops such as soybeans, wheat and corn, where the use a no-tillage system and the herbicide resistance promote better establishment. A correct understanding of the way temperature influences germination enables the prediction of the regions with the highest potential for colonization by this weed and thus facilitates its control. The objective of this study; therefore, was to discern the ways temperature affected the germination, viability and longevity of horseweed seeds. Testing was done at 10, 20 and 30°C, while evaluation occurred on days 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60. Seeds were... |

ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to study the linear correlations and spatial distribution between soil attributes and productivity and physiological quality of wheat seeds. Soil samples were collected at georeferenced points in an area of 41 ha with a rectangular grid of 100 × 100 m to determine soil fertility. Grain productivity, number of ears m-2, protein content, and physiological seed quality were assessed. The results were submitted to Pearson's correlation analysis, descriptive statistics, and geostatistics. Phosphorus content presented a high spatial variability, with a coefficient of variation of 97.79%. Protein content, number of ears, and SMP index presented low values of coefficient of variation, indicating their low spatial variability.... |

The occurrence of hardseedness and the low percentage of seed germination are major challenges when growing okra. For this reason, five elite lines of okra developed at the Campinas Agronomic Institute (IAC), three with angular pods (lines 8.1, 20.1.2 and 47.1) and two with cylindrical pods (lines 13.1.2 and 20.1.R), were evaluated for seed quality and compared to two commercial seed samples (Horticeres Sementes and Sakata Seed Sudamerica) of cultivar Santa Cruz 47. Seeds were field produced in an experiment set in the Technological Park of the Horticulture Center of IAC, in Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil, in a randomized block design, with three replications and 20-plant plots. Fruits were harvested 25, 35, 45, 55, 65 and 75 days after anthesis (DAA).... |
