River damming affects seedling communities of a floodplain forest in the Central Amazon Acta Botanica
Rocha,Maíra da; Feitosa,Yuri Oliveira; Wittmann,Florian; Piedade,Maria Teresa Fernandez; Resende,Angélica Faria de; Assis,Rafael Leandro de.
ABSTRACT The flood pulse of black water rivers in the Amazon basin determines the composition of species along the flood gradient in igapó forests. The Balbina dam, built on the Uatumã River, has altered the flood pulse and caused changes in the floristic composition of adult trees throughout the downstream area. There is a lack of studies on how communities of seedlings in igapó forests respond to changes in the flood pulse. This study investigates the response of seedling communities in the igapó forest downstream the Balbina dam and compares it with two pristine areas. The areas were sampled with transects of 1x25 m within 36 plots (25x25 m) along the flood gradient. Richness and dominance were calculated by simple regression and ordination analyses....

Nutritional supplementation required by native Cerrado species development, in nursery Biological Sciences
Matias, Renan Augusto Miranda; Venturoli, Fábio; Martins, Rosana de Carvalho Cristo; Pieruzzi, Fernanda Piccolo; Abreu, Alexandre Leandro Santos de; Lima, Mirella Basileu de Oliveira.
The ecological restoration of Cerrado ecosystems involves challenges pertinent to the fertilization of the substrate for seedlings in nursery, which are often produced by a single type of substrate. However, habitat heterogeneity suggests that the species may have different nutritional requirements. The objective was to assess the effect of substrate fertilization and nutritional supplementation by leaf in developing seedlings of Kielmeyera coriacea Mart. & Zucc. Eugenia dysenterica (Mart.) and DC Handroanthus impetiginosus (Mart. ex DC.) Mattos. The experiment was implemented in a 3x3 factorial completely randomized design (three types of substrates x three levels of foliar fertilization), with ten replicates. The treatments were tested by analysis...

Re-induction of desiccation tolerance after germination of Cedrela fissilis Vell. seeds Anais da ABC (AABC)
MASETTO,TATHIANA E.; FARIA,JOSE M.; FRAIZ,ANA C.R..
This work aimed to characterize the re-induction of desiccation tolerance (DT) in germinated seeds, using polyethylene glycol (PEG 8000). Cell changes were investigated through cytological assays (cell viability and transmission electronic microscopy) as well as DNA integrity during loss and re-establishment of DT. The loss of DT was characterized by drying germinated seeds with different radicle lengths (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm) in silica gel, decreasing the moisture content to ten percentage points intervals, followed by pre-humidification (100% RH / 24 h) and rehydration. To re-induce DT, germinated seeds were treated for 72 h with PEG (-2.04 MPa) and PEG (-2.04 MPa) + ABA (100 µM) before dehydration. Germinated seeds did not tolerate desiccation to 10%...

Anatomical root variations in response to water deficit: wild and domesticated common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L) Biol. Res.
Peña-Valdivia,Cecilia B; Sánchez-Urdaneta,Adriana B; Meza Rangel,Joel; Juárez Muñoz,Juana; García-Nava,Rodolfo; Celis Velázquez,Raquel.
Root anatomical responses to water deficit are diverse and regulation of water uptake strongly depends on plant anatomy. The ancestors of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivars are the wild common beans. Because wild beans adapt and survive well in theon atural environment, it is hypothesized that wild common bean roots are less affected than those of domesticated beans at low substrate water potential (ψW). A wild common bean accession from Chihuahua Mexico and cv. Bayomex were studied. Seedlings with a mean root length between 3 and 4 cm were maintained for 24 h in vermiculite at ψW of -0.03 (well hydrated), -0.65, -1.48 and -2.35 MPa (partially dry). Ten anatomical characteristics of differentiation and cell division in root...

Morphological aspects of the propagation in Heliconia velloziana L. Emygd. (Zingiberales: Heliconiaceae) BABT
Simão,Daniela G.; Scatena,Vera L..
Morphology of seed and vegetative propagation was studied toHeliconia velloziana L. Emygd. (Heliconiaceae), a rhizomatous herb with a large aerial part. Seeds took about four months to germinate, probably due to the undifferentiated embryo and hard endocarp. Seedlings had two first foliar structures as scale leaves and the primary root developed, but the adventitious roots were more conspicuous. Vegetative propagation by rhizomes was faster than the sexual one. The roots developed after one month, while young shoots started developing after four to six weeks; young aerial shoots presented a variable number of cataphylls and two protophylls.

The improvement of bioactive secondary metabolites accumulation in Rumex gmelini Turcz through co-culture with endophytic fungi BJM
Ding,Chang-hong; Wang,Qian-Bo; Guo,Shenglei; Wang,Zhen-yue.
Abstract Aspergillus sp., Fusarium sp., and Ramularia sp. were endophytic fungi isolated from Rumex gmelini Turcz (RGT), all of these three strains could produce some similar bioactive secondary metabolites of their host. However the ability to produce active components degraded significantly after cultured these fungi alone for a long time, and were difficult to recover. In order to obtain more bioactive secondary metabolites, the co-culture of tissue culture seedlings of RGT and its endophytic fungi were established respectively, and RGT seedling was selected as producer. Among these fungi, Aspergillus sp. showed the most significant enhancement on bioactive components accumulation in RGT seedlings. When inoculated Aspergillus sp. spores into media of...

Germination and early growth of physic nut submitted to levels of salinity REA
Lima,Luiz A.; Almeida,Willian F. de; Lima,Pedro L. T.; Oliveira,Eduardo C.; Shock,Clinton C..
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of salinity on early physic nut plant development. In the first trial, physic nut seeds were exposed to seven levels of salinity (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12dS m-1) with eight repetitions, using a substrate of paper soaked with solutions of CaCl2 and KCl. The treatments were evaluated based on the initial germination, total percentage of germination, and time necessary to germination of 50% of the seeds. Increased salinity reduced the first germination count and delayed the time to 50% germination. From 10dS m-1, there was a reduction in germination percentage. The second trial evaluated the effect of salinity on the growth of physic nut seeds. This trial, carried out inside a greenhouse, with a completely...

Volume of cells on trays influences hydroponic lettuce production Horticultura Brasileira
Lima,Tiago JL; Gazaffi,Rodrigo; Ceccherini,Guilherme J; Marchi,Luana; Martinez,Marcela; Ferreira,Camila G; Sala,Fernando C.
ABSTRACT Lettuce seedlings used on hydroponic cultivation (NFT) are usually produced in trays with small volume, requiring two transplants: from tray to nursery and then to the definitive place. The aim of this study was to verify lettuce performance under NFT system, using seedlings produced in trays with several cell volumes (50, 40, 35, 31, 30, 29, 27, 20 and 10 cm³ cell-1). The tray volumes are considered treatments. The experimental design was completely randomized blocks, with four replicates. Seedlings were transplanted directly to the definitive profile, except those ones produced in 10 cm³ cell-1. Two harvests were performed, at 22 and 29 days after transplant (DAT). We evaluated number of senescent leaves, total number of leaves, shoot fresh...
