Reproductive biology aspects of two species of the genus Gavilea (Orchidaceae, Chloraeinae) in populations from Central Chile Gayana Botánica

The extent to which plants depend on pollinators for outcross pollen transportation is a key issue in plant reproductive ecology. We evaluated the putative breeding system, foral display, and natural pollination in two Southern Cone of South American orchids, Gavilea araucana and G. venosa, by performing four hand pollination trials (agamospermy, autogamy, geitonogamy, and xenogamy tests) and by counting each fower and fruit produced by plants in natural conditions. Fruit set differed signifcantly depending on the origin of pollen as well as on the presence of a pollen vector. None of these species produced fruits by the agamospermy tests, therefore indicating that they require the presence of pollen on the stigmas for fruit setting. By contrast, only G....

Helianthus petiolaris and H. annuus are exotic invaders that have spread widely in central Argentina in the last 70 years. As other annuals of the same genus, these species are outcrossers bearing a sporophytic self-incompatible mechanism. We investigated the ability to self-pollinate in plants of five accessions of each species, its influence on some reproductive traits, and compared to the cultivated sunflower, in which breeding for self-compatibility has been very successful. Legitimate flowers visitors pollinate the flower during the visit and thus influence the production of fruits and seeds. We tested whether the visitation rate of potential pollinators is associated with the amount of seeds per fruit produced by the self-compatible bromeliad Tillandsia stricta (Bromeliaceae). We determined whether hummingbirds are legitimate visitors by testing for a correlation between visits and pollination (seed production) at the Guapiaçú Ecological Reserve (Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçú), state of Rio de Janeiro. Breeding system and related floral features under natural and experimental conditions of Passiflora suberosa (Passifloraceae) Boletín de la Sociedad

The breeding system, the floral characteristics and the visitors of the polymorphic Passiflora suberosa were studied in different natural populations of Corrientes and Misiones provinces, and at a partially-opened greenhouse in Buenos Aires. The different reproductive indexes calculated evidenced that, although it is highly self-compatible, autogamy is partial. The reproductive efficiency was similar in the field and in the greenhouse. The major relative reproductive success obtained by induced self-pollination suggests that the reproductive output may be improved with the help of pollinations, either natural or artificial. A putative mutant of a self-compatible yellow passion fruit with the corona color as a phenotypic marker Bragantia

Yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa) is a self-incompatible crop with purple corona flowers (PCF). Plants exhibiting white corona flowers (WCF) were observed in an experimental field located in Campos dos Goytacazes - RJ, Brazil. This study was performed in order to test the fertility of these genotypes through studies of in vivo pollination, meiotic behavior and pollen viability. Using in vivo pollination, the mean fruit set percentage, obtained from self-pollinations at the moment that flowers open, was 70.83% in WCF and 0% in PCF.
