Bird mixed flocks including Cypsnagra hirundinacea and Neothraupis fasciata as species with sentinels were studied in "campo-cerrado" in order to investigate the possible relationship between alertness and the mixed flock leadership. This study was conducted from March to September 1996 and mixed flocks were observed on average for 2:30h. The time with sentinels were recorded for C. hirundinacea and N. fasciata. The sentinels of Cypsnagra hirundinacea performed most of the vigilance (time with sentinel was on average 42 ± 17%, 41 ± 17% of which by C. hirundinacea, whereas only 1.2 % by N. fasciata) and gave all the alarm calls recorded (54% of the encounters with raptors stimulated alarm calls). A relationship was verified between time with sentinel and... |

ABSTRACT: Aquaculture activities have been part of mankind's history for centuries. In Aktihep's tomb (2,500 B.C.), ancient Egypt, scenes of men removing tilapias from aquaculture ponds are depicted (Basurco; Lovatelli, 2003). In Brazil, aquaculture is defined by Brazilian federal law no. 11,959, from June 29, 2009, as the total or partial growth of organisms in aquatic environments, typically within a confined or controlled space. Fishing may be defined as the capture of fishery resources in a natural environment. Aquaculture's advantage over fishing is the generation of more homogeneous, traceable, and consistently available products (Embrapa Pesca e Aquicultura, 2022a). Fishing and aquaculture play an essential role in food production and supply for... |

Tropical cyclone (TC) monitoring and forecast in the South West Indian Ocean (SWIO) basin remain challenging, notably because of the lack of direct observations. During the 2018–2019 cyclone season, S-1 Sentinel SAR images were acquired, as part of the ReNovRisk-Cyclone research program, giving access to unprecedented detailed TC wind structure description without wind speed limitation. This paper assesses the quality of these data and the impact of their assimilation for TC forecasts. SAR observations are compared with analyses from a convection-permitting, limited area model AROME OI 3D-Var and with wind products used for operational TC monitoring. Their bias depends on the angle of incidence of the radar and the observation error is larger for extreme... |
