A redescription of the Indo-West Pacific Spirobranchus corrugatus Straughan, 1967 (Serpulidae, Polychaeta), and an alternative hypothesis on the nature of a group of Middle Miocene microfossils from Poland Naturalis

Spirobranchus corrugatus, a little known species, is redescribed based on ample material from Australia, Indonesia, Japan and the Seychelles. The species is characterized by a seemingly porous tube, sunk into the substrate. Characteristically, the opercular plate shows a number of radial ridges on its distal surface, resembling Middle Miocene microfossils from Poland. The ventral rim of the opercular bulb of Sp. corrugatus bears numerous ocelli, with single lenses. A comparison with similar species is given.

Distinguishing the genera Apomatus Philippi, 1844 and Protula Risso, 1826 (Polychaeta: Serpulidae). A further Plea for a Methodical approach to Serpulid Taxonomy Naturalis

Ventral thoracic bloodvessel-patterns were defined in a random sample of 152 living specimens of the Apomatus/Protula- complex. Two main patterns and a derived one could be recognized. Eight characters, often used in Serpulid taxonomy and retraceable in preserved material, were determined too: e.g. presence or absence of an operculum and pattern of thoracic setae. These parameters were correlated to the vascular patterns. It was shown that (a) all operculate specimens possess a vascular system of one main pattern; 86% of those closely studied have "Apomatus-setae" at least from setiger 4 onwards; all have radioles with paired rows of compound eyespots. Sabellids and serpulids (Polychaeta sedentaria) from the type Maastrichtian, the Netherlands and Belgium Naturalis

Calcareous tubes of the sabellid genus Glomerula and of the family Serpulidae (subfamilies Serpulinae and Spirorbinae) rank amongst the commoner, highly diverse biota of the type Maastrichtian strata. These cover the sequence from the upper Beutenaken Member (Gulpen Formation) up to and including the Meerssen Member (Maastricht Formation). Of the 40+ taxa of calcareous worm tubes found in this interval, the commonest ones are described and illustrated in the present paper, which also comprises a revision of data published in 2005.

Pileolaria berkeleyana, a spirorbin polychaete worm introduced to the Netherlands (Polychaeta: Serpulidae: Spirorbinae) Naturalis

The spirorbin polychaete worm Pileolaria berkeleyana, new for the fauna of the Netherlands, was found at different localities in the Oosterschelde area in the province of Zeeland. They were found on empty shells and on boulders, which confirms their preference for hard substrates. The introduction of the species is discussed, together with the three other species of Spirorbinae recorded as living on the coast of the Netherlands.
